Great little game. Very entertaining and also quite challenging.
Lab 7: Cold Nights is a challenging indie survival strategy game that combines resource management, base defense, exploration, and side-scrolling action into a tense and rewarding experience. Developed and published by CaveDave, the game places players inside a mysterious research facility where danger lurks behind every corridor and survival depends on careful planning rather than brute force. Although its visual presentation is intentionally minimalist, the gameplay systems underneath offer a surprising amount of depth, creating an experience that constantly tests a player's ability to think ahead and manage limited resources. The game's premise immediately establishes a feeling of desperation. Trapped within a dangerous laboratory filled with hostile test subjects and unknown threats, players must search for a way to escape while enduring increasingly difficult attacks. The facility itself feels like a hostile environment where every room may contain valuable supplies or deadly consequences. Rather than guiding players through a heavily scripted narrative, the game allows its atmosphere and survival mechanics to tell the story. The sense of isolation and uncertainty becomes one of its strongest qualities. Unlike many survival games that focus primarily on combat, Lab 7: Cold Nights places equal importance on preparation and resource allocation. Every decision matters because resources are scarce and mistakes can be difficult to recover from. Money, electricity, ammunition, chemicals, and construction materials all serve important purposes, forcing players to constantly evaluate their priorities. Spending too much on one area can leave another vulnerable, creating a steady tension that remains present throughout the entire experience. One of the game's defining features is its defensive planning system. Players must build and maintain protective structures capable of holding back waves of hostile creatures. Defenses are not simply optional tools but essential components of survival. Choosing where to place barricades, how to reinforce vulnerable areas, and when to invest in stronger protection becomes a major part of the strategy. Successful defenses provide a genuine sense of accomplishment because they directly reflect the effectiveness of the player's planning. The progression system is equally satisfying. As players survive longer and gather additional resources, they gain access to stronger weapons and better defensive options. Equipment can be upgraded, allowing players to gradually transform from vulnerable survivors into far more capable defenders. This steady growth provides an important sense of momentum and ensures that every successful run feels meaningful. Improvements are tangible and often make a noticeable difference in future encounters. Exploration also plays a key role in the overall experience. Venturing into different parts of the laboratory is necessary to uncover resources, discover useful items, and locate possible routes to freedom. The environment encourages cautious exploration because danger can emerge at any moment. Every new area carries the promise of valuable rewards as well as significant risks, making exploration an exciting and often nerve-racking aspect of the game. The laboratory setting itself contributes heavily to the atmosphere. Dark corridors, abandoned sections, and mysterious facilities create a feeling of constant unease. Players rarely feel completely safe, even during quieter moments. This tension is amplified by the knowledge that resources are limited and that future threats are inevitable. The game successfully uses its environment to maintain suspense without relying on excessive horror elements. Combat is simple but effective. Weapons provide reliable ways to defend against hostile enemies, but success rarely comes from combat alone. The game consistently reminds players that preparation and planning are just as important as direct confrontation. Running out of ammunition or neglecting defenses can quickly turn even manageable situations into disasters. This balance between action and strategy helps distinguish the game from more traditional side-scrolling shooters. The pacing is particularly well designed. Gameplay alternates between preparation phases and moments of intense pressure. Players spend time gathering supplies, improving equipment, and reinforcing defenses before being forced to put those preparations to the test. This cycle creates a satisfying rhythm where every quiet moment serves a purpose and every confrontation feels significant. The game never allows players to become completely comfortable, which helps maintain engagement over long play sessions. Visually, Lab 7: Cold Nights embraces a minimalist style that prioritizes clarity over spectacle. While the graphics may appear simple, they effectively communicate important gameplay information and support the overall atmosphere. The side-scrolling perspective keeps action readable while allowing players to monitor their defenses and surroundings with ease. The art style may not impress players looking for cutting-edge visuals, but it serves the game's mechanics well. Another strength is the game's emphasis on efficiency. Players are constantly encouraged to optimize their strategies and make better use of available resources. This focus creates a rewarding learning curve where knowledge becomes just as valuable as equipment. Each failure teaches important lessons, and future attempts often benefit from improved planning and decision-making. The result is a game that feels challenging without becoming unfair. The inclusion of leaderboard support and speedrunning elements adds additional replay value. Skilled players can challenge themselves to complete objectives more efficiently and compare their results with others. This competitive aspect fits naturally with the game's emphasis on optimization and strategic thinking, providing further motivation to master its systems. However, the game is not without flaws. New players may initially find the experience difficult to understand due to its limited guidance. Important mechanics often need to be learned through experimentation, which can create frustration during the early hours. The minimalist presentation may also give the impression of simplicity when the underlying systems are actually quite complex. Additionally, players looking for extensive story content may find the narrative elements too subtle compared to the gameplay-focused design. Despite these shortcomings, Lab 7: Cold Nights succeeds because it remains committed to meaningful survival mechanics. Every choice has consequences, every resource matters, and every successful defense feels earned. The game rewards patience, intelligence, and adaptability rather than simply testing reflexes. Its systems work together to create a consistently engaging experience where survival always feels uncertain. Lab 7: Cold Nights is an impressive blend of survival strategy, resource management, and defensive gameplay that offers far more depth than its modest appearance suggests. Through careful planning, tense exploration, satisfying progression, and constant pressure, it creates a compelling challenge that rewards thoughtful play. While its learning curve and minimalist presentation may not appeal to everyone, players who enjoy strategic survival experiences will discover a hidden gem that delivers a surprisingly rich and rewarding journey. Das spiel macht spaß und lohnt sich für den preis
can't even find a battery... but well it was fun still a bit to easy to die
I really like it! Even though it has really simple mechanics, there is still a sort of complexity to them. However, some bugs that occur is that there would be colorful flashes on screen, don't know if that was patched, when reloading the shot gun, sometimes when I would reload once then fire, it would stay stuck on only loading 1 shell. Another one is that when I would get into the elevator, sometimes i can't scroll to the floor level that I want and exit and re-enter the game. Oh I even though I searched all the lockers, I couldn't find the upgrade for one of the machine gun. On the other hand, this game is really fun and addicting! I can't wait to reveal secrets within!!!
Fun little game, would be really fun with a co-op mode but still good without. I play to kill time now and then I'd recommend getting it if you find yourself waiting for something often or like to get to top of leaderboards etc...
This game looks kinda unimpressive on the outside (I watched splattercats video and thought it looked dope.) It seems fairly new but if you can get it (escpecially on this sale easy $7 for a good game.) it's confusing on a couple things in the beginning but once you've played a couple rounds you'll start learning the meta and where things are. it's quite fun and very enjoyable. I've been coming back to this game every so often when i'm waiting for friends. The dev is super involved with playerbase. When i post a question it's answered within a day or so. If anyone posts a bug he goes right in on fixing it. (I found a bug and the next day it was already patched.) He has high hopes and ideas for the game, and so do I. I can't wait to see what he brings. I promise you once you get a feel for the game it is very fun. TIPS: bottom floor is basement, get some starting power up in security and elevetor, the max out lights as soon as possible for easier headshots and to see things laying around. left click to bring up inventory menu for turrets, walls, and pills the ammo box is 1 floor above basement, the armory is there too. Not to sure but I feel like the basement is the largest room so thats where I base my defences. (there is a vending machine barricade in the second floor.. havent really used that floor for anything.) if you use to much power and go negative the alarm will sound. to turn it off the switch is far back in the basement. theres some other cool stuff around good luck and have fun. :D
Very much still an early access game, but still an amazing oldschool zombie survival with a super developer. this thing is going places.
