Reviews
I waited for this game because it seemed similar to the japanese folklore. Actually, the sword fighting feature made me even more interested in playing it. So, I bought it on early access release today and played for a while. what's this game about? simply, you've being locked in old mansion with many apparitions of ancient japanese swordmen which were tragically murdered there in XVII century. You have to place offerings you find on locations in order to move further, fighting at the same time with immortal souls of anguished warriors.
let's begin from props.
- Graphics are pretty nice. I would say that they are [strike]balancing between Nice and bad[/strike] actually pretty nice if not to consider some things(like paintings) made by AI. - Game is well optimized for my PC specs. I have never encountered any lags or low FPS indicators. - Main menu design looks pretty good! - Models and animations are not bad at all , though they're sometimes look cartoony or a bit raw. edited: WOW! Some objects are even desructible! - Every single item has it's description. that makes the game's lore more detailed. - Again, the sword fighting feature. Not mentioning it's cons, this idea is very interesting and makes Kyosho special compared to other indie games. - inventory. This time we got not just a backpack where you can store everything you need. This game mechanic was clearly inspired by Resident Evil series where you have to place and rotate items like tetris to fit them all. - This game has English subtitles and UI translation!
Now, cons.
- Game has no thrill and horror in it. Yes, it's complicated sometimes, but it definitely lacks the tension and fear it should evoke. the enemies don't make any sounds before they appear. the game also warns you that they are nearby very softly by changing the light filter to cold. i would definitely add a loud sudden sound and a sharp, instantaneous change of light with a pronounced camera shake when the apparition detects the player. this would add an element of jumpscare to the game. Also chases are boring too because of the enemies slowness and sometimes inability to avoid them(it's getting predictable very fast). By the way, apparitions doesn't make any scary sounds as well. their deep japanese speech makes them a bit strange and uncomfortable, but not scary at all. their damage is not too big to make any tension too. - Location designs. [strike]they're really small and even the first location has visible walls around it. that doesn't look good. mansion itself feels small too, sometimes so much that you can't turn around comfortably. I don't know if it's related to the game's idea, but I totally find it uncomfortable. [/strike] I played for a bit more, and wanna say that further locations appear bigger. Anyways, it adds some more athmosphere and makes the fights more dangerous. Also I discovered attic(safe zones) with additional sword stand, cabinet for items and even its own vendor. Pretty interesting. - Sword fighting. again. idea itself is extremely interesting. but I think it gets boring after some time because it's too simple. Also it makes the game not scary because you feel like you can resist your enemies if they're alone. I think it would be better if it was way harder and give priority to the player's ability to escape(so leave a sword fighting as a last chance for player to save himself), rather than fight the enemy so that he is in constant tension or a feeling of helplessness. In my opinion, as long as there is an opportunity to easily defeat any enemy, these feelings will be absent from the game. - Game's sound design. water sounds horrible to be honest. also would be good to add some other sound effects for enemies, detection, interactions, inventory and menu. - monotony of gameplay. I guess it has to be some more riddles and quests than just finding random stuff in closets and shelves and placing them on offering tables. at least, I cleared 3 chapters and I haven't spotted any changes in gameplay since the first one, unfortunately.
Overall
Overall, Kyosho has great potential. But it still needs some work, to be very fun and scary to play at the same time. Don't forget that this game is still in early access right now. if you're interested in such games, I guess it's worth buying because it's 10% off right now and it doesn't cost much at all. Indie horror games like this are a rare find these days.
There isnt even real combat in this samurai game All we can do is dodge mini game and collect stuff
