What you see in the trailer is literally the tutorial level. The sex scenes are PG at best and the art style makes it extremely difficult to read the environments. No gamepad support so you have to play with a mouse and keyboard. You have no target lock on so the only way to know that an enemy is attacking is by wildly swinging your sword everywhere you go. The player also doesn't react to getting hit so you'll just die and start back at the beginning seemingly at random if you don't keep an eye on the tiny health bar at the bottom left. Early access is a generous term for this title. This is more like an alpha. Even the full price for the game is not worth it. EDIT: My gamepad stopped working as I tried to play this. Unrelated to the game, it was an old gamepad. I tried a new one and it worked so I redact that part of my review.
Kurotsuki, developed and published by Era t’my, is a compact action game that draws clear inspiration from Souls-like design while framing its experience within a dark, stylized interpretation of Japanese myth and folklore. It presents itself as a challenging, combat-focused journey where precision and patience are essential, placing players in a series of encounters against hostile spirits and formidable bosses. Rather than building a large, interconnected world, the game opts for a more contained structure, focusing on delivering a sequence of battles that emphasize timing, awareness, and careful execution. The core gameplay revolves around deliberate, methodical combat. Attacks carry weight, dodging requires proper timing, and enemy patterns must be studied to succeed. The game encourages a cautious approach, punishing reckless aggression and rewarding players who take the time to learn how each encounter unfolds. This creates moments of tension that align well with the genre it draws from, particularly during boss fights where the stakes feel higher and the margin for error becomes smaller. When the mechanics come together, there is a sense of satisfaction in overcoming difficult encounters through persistence and adaptation. However, the execution of these ideas is uneven. While the foundation of the combat system is solid, it lacks the polish and responsiveness needed to fully support its design. Movements can feel stiff, and attack feedback is not always as precise as it should be, which can make some encounters feel frustrating rather than challenging. Enemy variety is also limited, and although bosses provide memorable spikes in difficulty, the overall progression does not introduce enough new elements to keep the gameplay consistently fresh. Over time, the repetition of similar encounters can reduce the sense of discovery that is often central to this type of experience. Visually, Kurotsuki succeeds in establishing a consistent atmosphere. Its environments are dark and minimalistic, drawing on traditional Japanese themes while incorporating supernatural elements that give the world a haunting tone. Lighting and color are used effectively to create mood, even if the overall level of detail is modest. Character models and animations reflect the game’s indie scale, with noticeable stiffness that can occasionally break immersion. Despite these limitations, the visual direction helps give the game a distinct identity. The inclusion of adult-oriented content adds another layer to the experience, though it feels more like an additional stylistic choice than a core component of the gameplay. While it may appeal to a specific audience, it does not significantly enhance the mechanics or narrative, and its presence can feel disconnected from the otherwise serious tone of the combat and setting. This aspect further defines the game’s niche appeal, making it less accessible to a broader audience. Structurally, the game is relatively short and focused. It does not offer extensive exploration, branching paths, or deep progression systems, instead delivering a straightforward sequence of encounters that can be completed in a limited amount of time. While this keeps the experience concise, it also limits replayability, as there are few incentives to return once the main content has been completed. The lack of variety in both gameplay and structure reinforces the sense that the game is more of a concentrated experience rather than a long-term commitment. Despite its shortcomings, Kurotsuki manages to deliver moments of genuine engagement, particularly for players who appreciate challenging, skill-based combat in a smaller-scale format. It demonstrates a clear vision and an understanding of the core elements that make Souls-like games compelling, even if it does not fully refine those elements into a consistently polished experience. In the end, Kurotsuki is a game that stands out more for its atmosphere and intent than for its execution. It offers a focused and occasionally rewarding experience that will resonate with players willing to overlook its technical and mechanical limitations. While it lacks the depth and refinement needed to compete with larger titles in the genre, it remains an interesting and distinct entry within the indie space. Rating: 6/10
