“KUMASAMA” is a horror adventure set in the present day.

◆Story
Recently, bear attacks have been occurring all over the country.
I saw something about it on the news, but I was sure it had nothing to do with life in my town.
…Or so I thought.
Someone spotted a large brown silhouette lurking in the darkness, at night, in an abandoned factory.
There’s no doubt that something terrifying and enormous is hiding in this town.
…and eventually, I came to understand that the “something” was her.
I think of her—and of the days I can never return to.

very good game from a small dev. slight performance issues but very solid. no reason to not give it a try
KUMASAMA is a very short horror adventure that surprised me with how much atmosphere it manages to create in such a small amount of time. I am exploring a present day town where bear attacks have been happening, and there is a strange brown figure being seen around an abandoned factory at night. The game does not throw a huge amount of information at me straight away, which I think works well because I am left wondering what exactly is hiding in the town and why it seems so important to the story. The gameplay is very simple. I am mainly walking around, exploring the environment and inspecting objects to trigger events and move the story forward. There are no quest markers and there is no time limit, so I can take my time and look around instead of constantly being told where to go. I like this approach because the game is clearly more interested in atmosphere and discovery than complicated mechanics. It feels more like a short interactive horror story than a traditional survival horror game. The biggest strength for me is the way it handles the creature itself. KUMASAMA does not simply treat the bear as a basic monster that exists to chase me around. There is something much more personal about the story, and the contrast between the creature being timid while also having dangerous claws gives it a strange personality. I like that the horror is mixed with something almost cute and sad rather than being completely focused on making me feel threatened every second. The abandoned factory and nighttime setting also work well. The low poly style is simple, but I think it suits the kind of small independent horror experience this is. I can explore without having the screen filled with objectives or unnecessary interface elements, which lets the environment do most of the work. The story is also short enough that it does not have time to drag itself out. The advertised playtime is around 10 to 40 minutes, and I think that is important to keep in mind before starting it. The main weakness is obviously the lack of depth. Once I understand how the game works, there is not much more to the gameplay than walking around and inspecting things. There are no complicated puzzles, combat systems or large areas to explore. I do not think that is necessarily a failure because the game is clearly designed as a short experience, but it does mean I cannot judge it like a full length horror game. If I wanted something that could keep me busy for several hours, this would be far too limited. I also think the story could have benefited from being a little longer. There is an interesting idea underneath it, and the relationship between the narrator and the mysterious creature gives the game more emotional weight than I expected. At the same time, the short length means there is not much room for the characters or world to develop. I finished with the feeling that I had experienced a small piece of a story rather than a huge horror adventure, although I think that works better than stretching the same idea out for too long. Overall, KUMASAMA is a small but memorable horror experience that knows exactly what it wants to be. I like the mysterious setup, quiet exploration, unusual creature and simple presentation, and I think the short length actually helps the atmosphere because the idea never has time to become repetitive. The lack of gameplay depth and very short runtime stop me from rating it alongside my bigger horror favourites, but the fact that it is completely free makes it much easier to appreciate. For me, it is best treated as a quick atmospheric horror story that I can finish in one sitting rather than a full survival horror game. Rating: 7.2/10
