KOEWOTAYORINI is a really unusual little escape game because almost everything I do is based around a phone call. I receive a call from a girl who has been kidnapped, and she is relying on me to help her escape. I cannot see what she is seeing, so I have to listen carefully to what she tells me, remember important details and use that information to decide what I should tell her to do next. I like this setup because it makes the phone call feel important instead of just being a way to deliver story dialogue. The main puzzle idea works surprisingly well. I have to pay attention to the information the girl gives me and then use the call and web search options to work out how to guide her. Sometimes a small detail from an earlier conversation can become important later, so I have to actually listen rather than simply clicking through everything. There are 13 stages and the game is designed around short sections, which makes it easy for me to play one or two at a time without needing to commit to a long session. The voice acting is probably the strongest part for me. The game has more than 600 voice lines, which makes the central idea of communicating through a phone feel much more believable. I also like that the story changes depending on the choices I make, so there are multiple endings to discover. The situation is obviously quite dark, with the girl being held captive and a killer threatening her, but the game does not need complicated combat or huge environments to create tension. Most of the pressure comes from knowing that I am responsible for making the right decisions. The biggest problem for me is that some of the puzzles can be difficult in a way that feels more like searching for the intended answer than naturally solving a problem. Because I am relying on information from a phone conversation, missing one small detail can leave me wondering what I am supposed to do next. There is a hint function, which helps when I get completely stuck, but I still think some sections could explain their logic a little better. I enjoy puzzles that make me feel clever, but I do not enjoy being stuck simply because I failed to notice one specific piece of information. The presentation is fairly basic, but I think that actually works in this case. This is not a game that needs huge environments or impressive action scenes because the whole experience is built around the voice on the other end of the phone. The darker atmosphere and simple visuals give me enough context without taking attention away from the conversations. I also like that the game is completely free, because the short length feels much easier to accept when I am not paying for a large adventure and instead getting a focused little mystery that I can finish in a couple of hours. I do wish there was a little more variety in how the puzzles worked, though. Once I understand the main loop, I know that I am going to listen, collect information and then use that information to guide the girl. The changing story outcomes give me a reason to replay sections, but the core gameplay remains quite similar throughout. That is not necessarily a bad thing because the game is clearly built around this one idea, but it does limit how much depth I can expect from it. For me, the quality of the central concept matters much more here than the amount of content. Overall, KOEWOTAYORINI is a clever and surprisingly tense free puzzle adventure. I really like the idea of having to rely on a girl's voice to help her escape, and the large amount of voice acting makes the conversations feel much more important than they would in a normal text based puzzle game. The short length, simple presentation and occasional frustrating puzzle logic hold it back slightly, but the atmosphere and unusual gameplay make it stand out. I think it is worth trying when I want something short, story focused and different from the usual escape game. Rating: 6.7/10
