Clever games curator review: 6/10A story-heavy game that is more walking sim than anything else but also features a bit of platforming that is surprisingly challenging given that the rest of the game requires zero reflexes. It’s pretty clearly someone’s first game, or at least major release. As such it has some very rough edges but it’s not without its sweet moments, and it’s obviously a labor of love. It’s definitely not for everyone but it might be for you depending on your tastes. The story is pretty much the main point of this game, Everything else is kind of just an excuse to get you to experience that story. It’s rather bittersweet though not without some uplifting messaging as well. It’s mostly told through voice over while completing the different game segments. The segments are definitely related to the story but don’t really tell it, so much as give you something to do while the narrator is talking. Luckily the quality of the voiceover work is top notch. The writing and plotting is definitely not as good, though I’m sure a bit of that comes down to taste. It’s a bit like the Lifetime Channel but in a video game. That said, I applaud the developer for trying to approach a type of story that is rarely told in video games. Zero aliens. No Orc invasions. This is a story about real human emotions, in response to the sorts of things that happen in real people’s lives like life, death, and parenthood. Technically the game is OK. Visually it goes for a simple, Low Poly/painterly look. At times it’s quite effective, at other times it looks very much like an old video game. For a walking SIM, the environments are a bit too repetitive. The platforming section is not great. Mostly because the character control is not very good: very floaty and remarkably hard to aim towards the location that you need to land in order to not fall back to the start. Including a platforming section definitely turns this into more of a game and less of an interactive “experience”. However I do struggle to imagine how many people are really going to go for both a very easy walking sim and also a comparatively unforgiving platforming game. However to be clear the platforming is at most 10 minutes of the game, unless you end up falling down a lot in which case it could be, well, infinite? In the end I recommend this, but to a fairly small slice of the steam user base. I am also recommending it in part as encouragement to the developer, as this is clearly a meaningful project for them for which they put a lot of effort. I do not think that this is the very best that it could be but it’s a good start and I hope that they continue to keep on making new and interesting games that aren’t just the same as everything else out there.
Krótka, bardzo emocjonalna historia o przemijaniu, samotności i wychowywaniu dziecka w pojedynkę.
It is a story about fatherhood, about tears and happiness and everything in between. I recommend this small game to everyone enjoying interactive narrative experiences.
A short and sweet emotional tale told through cozy environment and beautiful voice acting. One can nitpick about a thing or two, but overall it's an enjoyable experience worth the purchase. You can see the game comes from a place of love.
This is a very soothing and heart warming game. Everything comes really nice together with the music, the voice acting. It might be a short journey but really brings out different feelings along the way, and I find myself standing at the end just a little longer before saying goodbye.
I tried the demo and liked it, so got the game as well. Wow! really loved it. The main highlight of the is the screenplay, the story is good, but the way it is narrated, that made amazing! The game is perfect for cozy gamers and casual gamers as it is simple, good paced with an easy gameplay The whole journey is quite interesting and suited for story rich or people looking for meaningful stories. Adding a bit of platforming, catching chickens made it a bit more engaging than simple walking and interacting with objects. The whole graphics are good and the game is quite stable (haven't come across a serious bug in the whole run) The environment makes it quite easy to jump into the shoes of the protagonist. The whole color scheme, lighting and music are well selected. Even with the storytelling and a bit of side activities, it is majorly a walking simulator, which could become monotonous for some. The whole point of not having any directions or indicating where to go next, made me a bit doubtful if I am moving in the right direction, but somehow always it worked out. It is a linear story and it is well structured to make it clear which direction to proceed without explicitly saying it. That is commendable.
Cute short game, I liked the narrative, gameplay was easy, graphics were okay overall, little bit confusing of the jumping, would have loved more about the dynamic between his wife and father, but overall nice game
**I received this game for free, it's been a long time since i have checked my email but the developer was kind and generous enough to send beta code for testing.*** Played the game and its a short narrative story about loss, redemption, love and self confidence to strengthen yourself and have no thoughts or feelings of disappointment or thinking you are not good enough. Visual are beautiful, they are simple, colourful, and yet brings great atmosphere. My fav section is the woods of the mountains, looks very well done. Story is great as well, simple, loving and deep. Controls are easy and extremely simple. Great game for anyone wanting either a deep connection, cartoonish style visuals or quick and easy achievements.
A great game with a great story. The story turned out incredibly beautiful, it touches the soul and makes you think about what matters most. It is the perfect inspiring adventure to completely immerse yourself in on a Friday night after a hard week. I highly recommend everyone embark on this captivating journey! I am proud and honored to have had a hand in the creation of Kinsfolk as a 3D Character Artist! Thank you!
