About

Learning the basics of the Japanese alphabet doesn't have to be a slog. Kana Snap strips away the bloat of modern language apps and turns memorization into a high-speed arcade game. Designed by a student developer who is actively learning the language, this tool combines the science of SRS (Spaced Repetition System) with the dopamine of an arcade shooter. Whether you have 5 minutes on your Steam Deck or an hour on your Mac, jump into the grid and verify your knowledge against the clock.
🧠 Powered by SRS (Spaced Repetition) This isn't just random shuffling. The game uses a dynamic Spaced Repetition algorithm to track your hesitations and mistakes in real time. It intelligently resurfaces your "problem characters" right before you forget them, ensuring maximum retention with minimum effort.
🔇 Visual-Only Learning (Windows) On Windows and Steam Deck, the game is a pure test of visual memory and reflex. Zero audio distractions—just you and the grid.
🔊 Native Audio (Mac Exclusive) On macOS, the game utilizes Apple's Neural Text-to-Speech engine to provide native pronunciation for every character.

Reviews
Kana Snap is a great way to quickly learn Hiragana and Katakana. I've tried flashcards, but those require you to sit your butt down and actually do the flashcards again and again. I've also tried studying charts, but again that requires you to sit down and do nothing but focus on the chart. Kana Snap is like a combination of flashcards and the chart. It has a test mode, but I like the endless mode. In it, you are told to click on a specific letter, and then you go and click on what you think the letter is. If it's correct, you proceed to the next letter, but if you get it wrong, the correct letter flashes on the screen in red, and is added to a list to the left of words you need to work on more. You have to click on the correct letter to proceed. I mentioned I like this Kana Snap better than traditional methods of study because I can pull up a funny video on Youtube and passively watch that while I mindlessly click on letters. Eventually, even without trying too hard, I am beginning to learn the letters. So therefore it is only a matter of time that I will learn both alphabets, all while doing a thing I would have been doing anyway, which is watch funny Youtube videos. For less than $5.00, this is an incredibly handy tool. Highly recommended.
