Why do conventions need to be conventional (pun intended) when you can jump on an island and feel the rays of the digital sun? IWOCon 2021 is a convention app from Indie World Order showcasing upcoming & current indie games. Sail away with us into the heart of indies.

A really fun and interesting way to explore new indie games in a time where going to a convention in public is not possible. Seeing the time, effort and passion that has gone into this is inspiring, and I've really enjoyed exploring the islands to the epic piratey soundtrack!
Love the idea of this, but it runs abysmally on my mid-tier PC.
I respect the concept, but I feel IWO were way to ambitious with this. Conceptually it sounds great: multiple large pirate themed islands with loads of games to discover, and fun pirate-y activities like sailing ships and shooting cannonballs! But in practice it doesn't really work...
The Island
First of all, the islands in question aren't really special. They're made up entirely of Unreal Marketplace assets (specifically "Pirate Island"), and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, there is a distinct lack of cohesion. Like, you'll have these fairly generic looking islands, and then a bunch of stalls sort of haphazardly dotted all around. The nicest looking island is the island you start on...which judging from the screenshots on the "Pirate Island" store page is literally just the example island with a few stalls dropped in, which certainly explains why the other islands look so different in quality. Considering the pirate island theme plays a large part in the con's advertising, a lot more care should've been put into making the islands look and play well.
The Pirate-y Activities
You can sail a boat to each of the islands! It's really clunky, and it's much easier to use the fast travel option instead. Your boat can fire cannonballs! But I didn't come across any enemies. You can rapid-fire cannonballs by quickly tapping the mouse! I don't think that's supposed to happen. You can use a sword and a gun! The gun doesn't line up with the target reticule when firing something close to you, and there doesn't seem to be a point to either of these? Again, from what I played there are no enemies, and there's no multiplayer so there's no PvP tomfoolery...i'm starting to wonder if these were just other Unreal Marketplace assets sort of thrown in there?
Final Thoughts
It's a really cool idea executed very poorly. I feel the main issue is with the devs being over-ambitious; by trying to feature so many games spread across multiple islands, it's clear the devs ended up spreading themselves too thinly. If they restricted it to just the one small island, built from the ground up, with a much smaller selection of indie games, and without any of the unnecessary stuff, this could've been a much more polished and enjoyable experience that really does the featured games justice.

Without a doubt the best convention I've ever experienced! The amount of work put into the convention is outstanding! I have been exploring the indie islands and booths for hours and am still uncovering so many amazing secrets and gems that i never knew about in the indie community!! The booth design is magical and creative! Not one booth looks the same as another so you experience something new with every booth you visit! You can interact with all the booths also by clicking on the panels and it will take you to various pages for each individual game at the con that will explain more about the game to you! Absolutely stunning graphics in the convention! So many amazing mini games! Definitively a 10/10 experience for me all around! Can't wait to see what is coming in the future! Awesome work!
Awesome idea, very well executed!
I have to be completely honest, knowing the scale that the developers had in mind for creating this, I went into the experience with knee-deep expectations. What I got completely blew me away from the very beginning! A huge, sprawling set of islands to explore with plenty of booths. This event may be unconventional, but given the "new normal," this model may very well take off. There are some places that are not refined, but most of the negative experiences that players have with this event are based on their own hardware limitations and not the software itself. It was also contested that the pirate theme is "dumb." Think about it for a second, a pirate is independent of every agency or nation that would have them change their routine. Forget the whole thievery thing, pirates are indie, so I can't think of a better theme than this. Yes, this is not an optimized AAA experience, but if you don't like it, you could always ask for your money back. Oh wait, it's free!
An extremely ambitious way to show off the hard work of indie developers. There's a lot of content, so it takes a lot of disk space and may not run well on video cards without much ram, but it's pretty cool to see little indie titles presented in ways that would be financially impossible at physical conventions.
