Pretty good game. The lawyer was my favorite RO.
What a ride this game was! As somoene who grow up with Agatha Christie, I loved this game. The game leave you guessing who the culprit is, all with lot of humour and romance mixed in. C.C.Hill did an amazing job with this one! Remind me a bit of Murder, She Wrote. Just missing the great Angela Lansbury. This game isn't stand alone, the author is planning for a sequel.
Good
[STEAMDECK REVIEW] Wow! This was a super fun text-based game. I loved it so much and I'm glad I came across it. It's so rare to find more on steam that aren't just Choice of Games since I play many of those on my phone instead. I loved the mystery and the romances that this book 1 has to offer, and I can't wait for book 2 now! I want to know more already!! XD. Summary: You play as a wealthy MC who comes from a very wealthy but also corrupt family whose grandfather has just passed away and will be having his lawyer deal out the family inheritances. Before that can happen tho, a murderer in the family has been declared by dear old dead grandpa, and it's up to you to find out who is sus enough to kill among you. But can you do it before you're all murdered!? All of your relatives have also done some crazy things too, in recent years. So now it's even harder to find the killer! But you better find out soon, before you're the next one in the grave!! Now some in game information: -You can pick your MC's gender, ethnicity, some of their looks and even some of the in game genders for the romances. -You have 4 total romances. Your Bodyguard, family Lawyer, the Detective for this case, and a
TV show Host
along with two poly routes. You can pick the gender for the first 3 romances, but I believe the 4th is set in stone? I could be wrong on that last one since I don't quite remember. -Now the romances are pretty great. You can choose to not have intimacy with your ROs, but if you do, you have two intimate scenes with each person. A tame kiss scene of sorts, while later on comes the NSFW text-based sex scene. -All of the ROs let you choose whether you want to be in control or not, they also all have a kink. But there's 2 ROs where it really didn't come into play for this first book, in their solo routes. Those two were the Bodyguard and the secret romance. But the Bodyguard's kink does play out a little bit in the poly routes tho, which was nice. -Possible Triggers:
In game murders/crimes, textually written violence and blood, mafia danger/connections near the end discovered (possibly more coming in the second book so just fyi), parental infidelity, greedy wealthy psychopaths all around you, homophobia from family members, manipulations by family, co-dependency of sorts (EX: When the MC's family members all of a sudden treat the MC nicely in order to get things from the MC/help), and over all...a terrible toxic family environment.
-In game kinks are:
rope play, spanking, voyeurism, and hand cuffs
In the end, my total hrs is 9.8, so I'm assuming about 10hrs or less if you choose to play all of the romance options like I did. There's not much replayability though if you don't really care for the romances. But that's fine with me, because I wanted a more romance involved, mystery text-based game. The story is fun and keeps you on your toes during that first play-through and I definitely recommend it! For me personally, I was also able to play this on my Steamdeck, despite it saying it isn't playable. So there's that in case anyone wanted to try it out on there.
I've only just finished chapter 2, but I'm loving it so far! Really, I knew I had to buy it when I played the free demo on itch.io, but this is already exceeding my expectations. The only critique is I think they layout could be a little better. I'll admit my screen is a little small, but I feel that it could use just a little tweaking so you can fit more words on the screen. Update: Oh My God I just finished it. No spoilers, but it was glorious!
I have always loved Hill's writings. I was hooked when reading the demo, and decided I have to keep reading for more! I love that you get to choose the range of what kind of rich person you want to be, and I love the humour in the story. I think the plot were executed nicely, and it wasn't the "typical" murder investigation experience I would say. I do notice some typos, and it might not exactly be a story I would re-read twice, but once Book 2 comes out, I may return, who knows!
I really enjoyed this game. Perfect to escape from your own family drama- because hey, at least my family isn't *that* bad. And the romances were pretty sweet. Excited for the sequel!
nice and short game (long hour due to leaving the game on while doing other stuff). Bodyguard romance is amazing since they have the most connection with you, will try out other romance options to see if they are just as good. The mystery solving part is less than ideal, most of the evidences are presented to you by other people, and as a player there is not a lot of detective works to do. It feels like the main character didn't actually do anything, but just went along with a situation you can't control, pushed by convenient plot points Still, as a short and fun story it served its purpose, will definetely play the second part when it comes out
This was fun albeit somewhat short-ish, but that's expected. The first playthrough I did took me a little less than two hours. The love interests were nice, and I also enjoyed the overall mystery plot. Your family is full of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (except your aunt), but I didn't disliked them per se. Anyways, I definetly recomend checking this out if you have a couple bucks to spare and two-three hours to burn.
I get that it's incredibly difficult to write a branched interactive story like this, and I think many aspects of it are great. There are funny moments, stakes are high, the writing is inclusive of a range of genders and sexualities, and most of the writing is solid (there are a couple misspelled words, but with how high the word count is, there were bound to be mistakes, so I won't hold it against the author). Choices are remembered and coding seems consistent, although many choices don't affect even flavor text--often, you can choose two different options and get the exact same response, word for word. Unfortunately, though, the characters have very little depth, including the ones you're supposed to like (such as the love interests, who are woefully under-characterized.) Also, saving is unintuitive, and I lost my progress once. The biggest issue, however, is that the plot itself is so unrealistic and frustrating that it completely ruins immersion and makes the game unplayable as an actual detective game. (I'll describe the problems as vaguely as possible, and none of this should ruin it, but minor spoiler warning just in case:) I don't expect a mystery game to perfectly portray the legal system or detective work. That being said, there were so many plot holes that made me feel insane as the player. For example, part of the plot revolves around solving a murder committed 2 years ago. The murder weapon is an object which has been in everyday use since the murder. When the main character learns what the murder weapon is, however, they don't show any recognition. Instead, they think "huh, I need to figure out who owns a _____", despite it being a distinctive object that they have seen for years and have canonically noticed already. The player also has no chance to connect the dots in-game despite already having been told who owns the object and is supposed to be shocked later in the game when it is revealed. On the same note, when the detectives learn about the murder weapon, they arrest its owner, which makes sense, but part of their reasoning is that they swabbed the murder weapon and there was "only one set of prints." Again, this is two years after the murder, and the owner has been using this object for non-nefarious purposes every day. Why would they swab the object for prints two years later when it's been in constant use? Why would they be surprised to find the fingerprints of somebody who has been constantly using it? There are many similar moments: - A suspect is released from jail/suspicion despite overwhelming evidence against them just because a different but similar crime is committed when they have an alibi. - Early in the game, a character says something incredibly revealing that neither the player nor any in-game character can comment on; later, when this character is revealed to be guilty of that thing, everybody is shocked. I appreciate foreshadowing/clues, but this was so obvious, and more importantly, the player never has a chance to suspect this person despite the evidence they've seen. - A character receives a text luring them to a trap that detectives never look into tracing and the character doesn't mention as evidence that they're being framed. - A character has a secret that is very obviously foreshadowed. The player is allowed to guess what their secret is, but isn't given the correct answer as an option, despite the fact that they have enough information to know what is happening, and is forced to choose an incorrect option. The tl;dr here is that the game treats both its characters and the player like they're dumb. The plot happens to the main character, and while they can decide how rude they are and which love interests they want to hook up with, they can't decide anything of importance or solve the mystery for themself, despite having more than enough information to do so. If you were playing as a canonically naive or foolish main character, that would be one thing, but the actual detectives are also inept. This creates a disconnect with all of the characters, preventing them from having depth, and makes the game a frustrating experience.
