Impact Winter suffers from two sets of problems, poor design choices, and stale game play. Some examples of poor design: 1) wolves can see you from off screen especially in enclosed places like caves, are much faster, and stun you forcing you to do a stupid 'mini game' to shake them off, if you encounter a wolf, even while armed with a rifle, it's a free teleport back to the base and a 'death'. 2) the RNG of the loot makes it impossible to form a plan, i.e. in three playthroughs I was unable to find a colander for the lvl 1 storage upgrade (yes I searched every kitchen), in my 4th playthrough i found three in one kitchen. 3) Camps are pretty much useless, you're supposed to be able to drop off supplies for your robot to return to base, but the robot will only do that while you sleep at that SPECIFIC camp... Sleeping at your base will not let supplies be extracted from the camp. Stale Game play: The NPCs feel lifeless. The ones at base always give the same fetch quests to go to the same places, have virtually no random events (except for hey would you like me to take 15hp of damage to find 4 wood planks) and have no distinct personalities. The NPCs outside of your camp that give you quests don't even thank you for completing those quests, and don't give you rewards (a couple of times I wasn't sure if I had even turned in the quest till i checked the quest log). The only reward they give you is 'RP' which basically lets you 'level up'... Lets talk about RP for a second, so 'progression' lets you level up but that only 1) gives you a useless talent to 'equip' on one of your base NPCs, and shortens the timer to getting rescued... It should tell you something about the game when the 'reward' is to make the game shorter.
game is fun but has way to many bugs. for example you get stuck all the time and the part where you have to place all the signal boosters impossible at the water tower played for hrs that i cant get back and no refund would not recommend
(🇬🇧 English version follows the French review below)

Cela rappelle un peu This War of Mine dans l'esprit.

A Chilling Atmosphere Worth the Detour (Despite its Flaws)
Impact Winter is a highly divisive game, and playing it today requires knowing exactly what you're getting into. To put it simply: it's an experience with a truly sublime atmosphere, but one that is "weighed down" by a sometimes frustrating technical execution.
❄️ The Concept: a "Survival RPG" in the Snow
You play as Jacob Solomon, the leader of a small group of survivors holed up in a church after an asteroid strike has plunged the Earth into a permanent winter.

The Goal: survive for 30 days until rescue arrives.
The Core Mechanic: every significant action (helping a companion, exploring, upgrading your AKO-LIGHT robot) can reduce that 30-day countdown.

✅ The Strengths

Atmosphere and Art Direction: visually, the game is a success. The art style has a "post-apocalyptic graphic novel" feel, and the storm effects are incredibly immersive.
The Soundtrack: this is one of the game's biggest highlights. The 80s synth-heavy music perfectly captures the feeling of loneliness and biting cold.
Group Management: unlike The Long Dark where you are alone, here you must manage the morale and needs of your companions at the church. It feels a bit like This War of Mine in that regard.

❌ The Weaknesses

Technical Polish: even with post-launch patches, the game can still feel stiff. Loading times are noticeably long (especially when transitioning between interiors and the overworld).
Controls: playing with a keyboard and mouse is a struggle. A controller is absolutely mandatory for a decent experience.
Repetitiveness: the game requires a lot of backtracking. Since there is no fast travel, you'll spend a lot of time "trudging through the snow" with an often-limited inventory, which can become tedious.

📊 Verdict: Is it worth it?
YES, IF: you are a fan of atmospheric survival games, you've already exhausted The Long Dark, and you're looking for a game with a strong aesthetic—even if it means forgiving some clunky menus. NO, IF: you have zero patience for UI bugs, odd collision issues, or the slow pace of walking through deep snow. This is a game with "heart" and great design ideas, but the studio (Mojo Bones) never quite managed to fully smooth out the clunkiness of its engine. Fun Fact: The game was published by Bandai Namco, which is quite rare for an indie project of this scale. They saw its potential to be a "new benchmark" in the survival genre, but technical launch issues unfortunately kept it from becoming the classic it could have been.
Very interesting game. Love it.
