Hollow Memories, Huli's fourth work, sees Ian (name chosen by the player), a young man who has just returned to his hometown to find work, move into a suspiciously cheap apartment. The reason behind this modest rent lies in the fact that the accommodation is haunted by ghosts, two sexy ghosts to be precise, condemned to remain there until their curse is broken.
With the support of a friendly little spirit, it will be our job to find a way to help Miranda and her daughter Sammy (names of player's choice) by filling also in their hollow memories, among other things!
The game relies on the tried-and-tested micro-sandbox visual novel formula, where you can explore the apartment's rooms in search of girls to interact with, or you can use the TV to access minigames, which are needed to earn Memory Points, or to advance the story.
The game let you choose between two simple minigames to earn Memory Points, which can be spent to boost our stats, unlock sexual activities with girls or advance the story.
The first minigame is "Spot the Difference", which will have you search for and click on out-of-place objects in various rooms to rearrange them. At the top, under the navigation icons, are listed the items that could be different. Once all the rooms are in order, clicking Next will advance to the next round. The second minigame is "Anomaly Escape", in which you'll have to check if there's something different in any of the rooms and then click the Change, otherwise you have to click on Next if the rooms are already good, in both cases, you'll proceed to the next round.
Especially in "Spot the Differences", some differences are more subtle than others, but you can still save during both minigames, even between clicks in the first one, without any problems.
Stylistically in line with Huli's previous works, the game is well designed and equally well animated by hand, accompanied by pleasant background music, although it must be admitted that the girls perhaps suffer from a slight visual similarity between them, both in terms of shape and, above all, color, to the point that they are difficult to distinguish from one another, except for the fact that Miranda wears blue lipstick while Sammy has hair covering one of her eyes.
In any case, the biggest flaw of the title presented here is undoubtedly the absence of all threesome scenes. In fact, to defend himself from the recent scandalous attack by censorship, the developer made the unfortunate decision to remove them all to avoid even remotely approaching incest, which would have found a more immediate and certainly more acceptable solution for the public in the removal of the family relationship between the girls, for example, making them simple roommates ([spoiler]even if narratively it would be less impactful and would make less sense or would require rewriting the story[/spoiler]), perhaps even varying the color palette of one a little more to distinguish her from the other, I don't know, maybe making one of them a blonde.
Also, there is no real gallery in the game, but all scenes can be replayed at will, additionally it should be noted that the Steam Cloud save function is absent.
Bittersweet to say the least, as is typical of the developer, the gaming experience is generally not dissimilar to his previous two works.
[spoiler]Personal note: not identical, but still very similar to each other in appearance and personality, to me Miranda works with more enthusiasm with her mouth, although not by much, her ass and during wakeups, for this she earns the title of best girl in my eyes, followed closely anyway by Sammy who does not hold back either in terms of willingness and performance.

Hollow Memories, quarta opera di Huli, vede Ian (nome a scelta del giocatore), un giovane appena tornato nella sua città natale per trovare lavoro, trasferirsi in un appartamento sospettosamente economico. La ragione dietro questa modesta pigione risiede nel fatto che l'alloggio è infestato dai fantasmi, due sexy fantasme per la precisione, condannate a rimanere lì finché la loro maledizione non sarà spezzata.
Con il supporto di un simpatico spiritello, sarà compito nostro trovare il modo di aiutare Miranda e sua figlia Sammy (nomi a scelta del giocatore) riempiendo, tra le altre cose, anche i loro vuoti di memoria!
Il gioco si appoggia alla ormai collaudata formula della visual novel in stile micro sandbox, nella quale potremo esplorare gli ambienti dell'appartamento alla ricerca delle ragazze con cui interagire oppure potremo utilizzare il televisore per accedere ai minigiochi, necessari per guadagnare Punti Memoria, o proseguire con la storia.
Infatti, il titolo ti permette di scegliere tra due semplici minigiochi per guadagnare i Punti Memoria da spendere per potenziare le nostre statistiche, sbloccare attività sessuali con le ragazze o proseguire con la storia.
Il primo minigioco è "Trova le differenze" (Spot the difference), che ci farà cercare e cliccare su oggetti differenti dal normale nelle varie stanze per sistermarli, in alto, sotto le icone di navigazione, sono elencate le cose che potrebbero essere diverse, e quando tutte le stanze sono a posto, cliccando su Next si andrà al prossimo round. Il secondo minigioco è "Fuga dall'anomalia" (Anomaly Escape), nel quale dovremo controllare se in una delle stanze ci sono cose diverse dal normale, e quindi cliccare sul pulsante Change, oppure su Next qualora tutto fosse come dovrebbe, in entrambi i casi si proseguirà al prossimo round.
Soprattutto in "Trova le differenze", alcune sono più impercettibili di altre, ma comunque si può salvare durante entrambi i minigiochi, anche tra un click e l'altro nel primo, senza problemi.
Stilisticamente in linea con le opere precedenti di Huli, il gioco è ben disegnato e altrettanto ben animato a mano ed è coadiuvato da un piacevole sottofondo musicale, anche se bisogna ammettere che le ragazze peccano forse un po' di similitudine visiva tra loro, sia nelle forme che, soprattutto, cromaticamente, al punto da renderle difficilmente riconoscibili tra loro, se non per il fatto che Miranda ha il rossetto blu mentre Sammy ha i capelli che le coprono un occhio.
Ad ogni modo, la pecca più grande del titolo qui presentato è senza dubbio l'assenza di tutte le scene a tre, infatti, per difendersi dal recente scandaloso attacco della censura, lo sviluppatore ha compiuto l'infelice scelta di rimuoverle tutte per evitare di avvicinarsi anche solo lontanamente all'incesto, cosa che avrebbe trovato nella rimozione del rapporto di parentela tra le ragazze una soluzione più immediata e sicuramente di maggior gradimento per il pubblico, per esempio rendendole semplici coinquiline ([spoiler]anche se narrativamente sarebbe meno d'impatto e avrebbe meno senso o richiederebbe la riscrittura della storia[/spoiler]), magari variando anche un po' di più la palette cromatica di una per maggiormente distinguerla dall'altra, chessò, facendone una bionda forse.
Inolte, nel gioco non è presente una galleria vera e propria, ma tutte le scene sono ripetibili a piacimento, tuttavia va comunque notato che la funzione di salvataggio su Steam Cloud è assente.
Dolceamaro a dir poco, come tipico dello sviluppatore, l'esperienza di gioco non è generalmente dissimile dai suoi precedenti due lavori.
[spoiler]Nota personale: non identiche, ma comunque assai simili tra loro nell'aspetto e nella personalità, Miranda mi lavora con più entusiasmo sia di bocca, seppur non di molto, che col didietro e nei risvegli, per questo si guadagna il titolo di best girl ai miei occhi, seguita comunque a ruota da Sammy che comunque non si trattiene nemmeno lei in quanto a volenterosità e performance.
Mary non può inoltre mancare come menzione d'onore.[/spoiler]
