This game has a lot of potential for sure! But it is rough around the edges in some ways like the interface, the icons, etc. However I could easily see this being a top tier auto-battle-chess-whatever game especially if you like lots of depth to such things.
tl;dr. Avoid it for now, wait for a few updates
good:

Realistic characters and skills (probably the best design I ever saw in a game)
Variety of combinations
Variety of items
You can unequip, sell, and buy items
bad

Terrible interface and navigation.
Cluttered chessboard.
Too much information on everything
Realistic characters/ skill make it really hard to figure out what they are really doing in a full combat. And understand their roles just by observation
It takes a lot of time to do things during the planing phase, the menus are a mess and hard to navigate.
Same goes with the items, you have a huge number of ways to improve your items, but the buying menu is terrible, you cannot change the items straight from a hero to another.
Edit: Thanks for the reply Cliff, I bet Heroes Showdown will achieve that. If you allow me to give a few feedback on the game: Keep it simple. I love lore and learn about playing the game. I usually visit reddit and other places to get that. I think it is great to have a place in game to get that. But as soon as you open the game a new player can get overwhelmed. I liked what you did with the tutorial, it is a simple combo of assassins and you learn some simple mechanics. Maybe, everything else should be unlocked as the players get a grasp of the game. Improved navigation At first I tried the keyboard shortcut from the other auto-chess I play. When they didn't work I hovered my mouse to see if there are any tool tip on what key to press or what that thing would do. A new player might use mostly its finger or mouse. But as the time goes and the game becomes more competitive it is important to navigate faster and know where the information I need it. Improved GUI The GUI has a lot of information, but it is all rubbed on our face. There are some things better on Heroes Showdown than in the competition, like knowing some of the other team without the need to going to their battlefield. But it lacks a bunch of important information. I don't know how much money I will make at each turn, or what will make me win more. I need to go inside several menus just to figure out how to combine an item. And if you have a sword and a gem in your inventory, there is no option to merge them. There are too much information, but not enough valuable information. Heroes Identity When you reach the realistic levels you lose on the identity, or how easy is to identify a character. And that is important when creating your strategy. Be it RTS, as age of empires, age of empires 2 is much more easier to assess an army than on 3. Same goes to Riot's and Valve's auto-chess, they benefit from being cartoonish. Trying to find balance on realistic characters is hard. That is why some manga heroes wears different clothes or haircut than the rest of population. When you think about chess, it is pretty hard to mistake your pieces. The chessboard format also doesn't help with that. Skills Identity Similar to the heroes identity. I didn't feel the impact of the skills in game. Some are barely noticeable, and you have no idea when they triggered and what they did. There are a few exceptions of course. An good example was in one of my first games, I played against a team with a healing combo. The entire backlane looked the same, and the skill effects where similar, it looked like that was the default skin of the players. Thank you for developing this game. I will check it again in future releases. Cheers
I usually don't write reviews, but when I saw that the top review for this game is negative, I had to write mine. Here's why I think this game is the best autobattler currently available. 1) The game gets rid of one of the worst thing ever in some other autobattlers (like TeamFight Tactics) : you can actually buy items in a shop during the match. You're not enslaved by the RNG loot of the PVE rounds. If you need an item that gives critical damage, you can actually buy one, instead of just hoping to get one during PVE rounds. 2) The gem system. You can apply gems to the stuff you equip on your heroes, giving them additional properties. It's possible to buy them during the match, so once again : no RNG, just your own decision. It means that if you understand how to use these gems, you can get a HUGE advantage on other people who don't. 3) The rune system. I saw some people complaining that you can buy runes (with in game money) to enhance your team before even being in a match. For me, it's a positive aspect of the game : you're not only playing to earn some ranked points, you're also playing to buy runes and think about your tactics before even being in a match. You don't go in a match without having an idea of what you will play, you can actually think about your strategy before even being in the match, and it's awesome. My conclusion : this game rewards you for playing, and is less random than most of the autobattlers out there. It has amazing graphics, an interesting gameplay, and it brings to the autobattler genre something that it desperately needs : more tactic and less randomness. One last word about people complaining that they can't win against people with better runes : I sometimes play without runes just to see if I can still manage to win. And I can. Runes are good, and have an impact, but if you understand the game you can actually fight against that, and earn some top 1.
The game has some fun mechanics and certain things that are definitely a nice touch to the Auto Battler genre. Though after playing a few matches and enjoying quite some of them. I noticed that some people were way too strong. Later found out these people are overleveled and have "runes". This is where the problem starts, these people are unbeatable for newbies or casuals alike. If you don't make the "GP" to buy these runes. You'll be at a disadvantage. Once the runes are gone or removed, I'll change the review. As of now, not recommended.
this is a Great Game but it seriously needs help The lack of balance is Confusing and its kinda complicated and lacks explanation of how the heroes and synergies work and items as well, i noticed a fair amout of freezing and fps drops but all that aside...the game is good actually! hope it gets fixed in due time
The servers are permanently offline, and the game didn't even notify me of that, it made me waste 20min just waiting in the menu screen giving a illusion that the game is loading, lol
Does not work - servers are offline. That's also reason for delisting this item from Steam Store.
GREAT GAME for Early Access!! Just download! PROS: -Great Graphics -Stunning Map Backgrounds -Great Epic Sound Track -Fun Game play -Free and not P2W yet (but inevitable there will be a cost eventually, nothing is free in life and that's fine, this game deserves to be paid for) -Levelling up takes time and isn't quick -Just download it and be kind to developers who seem to have worked really hard on this game CONS: -Tutorial doesn't help someone who like me has never played anything like this before -Should be able to differentiate between rune shapes easier, spent 1500 gold on something I couldn't use -Explain better that your requesting heroes in 4v4, took a while to figure out that's what I was even doing (Plus a drag here to donate might be helpful) -Gold grind is tough -Game freezes sometimes, errorCode:P519C8194 SUGGESTIONS: -Editable UI -Daily gold log in rewards standard -Cross platform downloadable -Before posting a negative review, try making a game/mobile app yourself. Its not easy so koodos too PATHFINDER8
I've been playing since CBT and I'm loving this game. Though I'm still adjusting with the new changes on the game and I'm not sure why in game currency is kinda bit slow to gain but other than that it still feels like epic chess. One of the best games I played so far looking forward for new updates. Keep it up Devs!
