EDIT: I saw this garbage had achievements added, so I figured f**k it I'll download this again... IT'S 8.59 GB! And now they are charging CDN$ 259.99 for this?!?! Valve, Ban this "developer"! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HEDE Game Engine wants to be the next "easy" game maker out there. While it might be easy, it is so extremely flawed and absolutely terrible! Between missing features, glitches, annoying features, and just how lazy this engine is makes this a hard pass! All you need to know why to avoid this is this posted on the store page. "At the current state, you can't make a build of your game. You can play it only inside our game engine." Let me just say, that some the artwork assets included in this are actually pretty good! No real complaints there, other than there is not a whole lot to pick or choose from. Half of the assets shown in the store page are not in here, so be warned with that... Here's the thing though. It's all just repackaged Unity Store Assets. With very little looking you can just find them all there. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2403853446 On top of that, you can't add in your own assets. There is no options for sounds. No options for music. No options to change game mechanics or controls. There is basically no game mechanics PERIOD! Like I said you can't even add your own assets, or modify the assets already in here. You know what's fun? Have a super annoying "Royalty Free" guitar music playing the entire time you are using HEDE. You have to mute the whole software audio so you don't drive yourself crazy, which is OK seeing how there is no sounds in the engine anyways! With that, I figured I'd still give HEDE a try, just for the lols, seeing how I got a key for dirt cheap. I was making some good progress, UNTIL THE ENTIRE EDITOR GLITCHED! Everything I had put minus the player character glitched out and was replaced with a solid purple overlay. This prevented me from finding anything I placed, and just cause my character to just fall into the void because there was magically nothing there for the player to stand on! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2403817038 So I made a second one, and was doing really good with it. Oh boy did it really show how much more problems this engine had. Remade what I had, placed the character, placed some items and decorations, enemies, and an end point. I really hated how when you tried to reclick on something to change or move it, it will more likely click the thing behind it instead of the thing you are pointing at. Most times stuff will just be stuck there unless I deleted everything behind it. LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING FUN! I played what I made, turns out your character does not have animations, no attacks either. The player movement is so buggy and laggy, and will even get stuck on literally everything! Enemies don't exist! There are just a single sprite that does nothing! The only pickups you can create is "gold" which just net you a score. Everything is just so pathetically empty and lifeless! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2403853426 Oh but here is the best part! I quit out of the game. Forgot that I didn't take a screenshot of my hard work, so I went back into the engine and tried to open my level. MY ENTIRE LEVEL GLITCHED OUT AND WAS WIPED!! So I figured, OK I'll go back to the map sharing thingy in the main menu, find my map, and open it that way to play it and get a screenshot. Well I also see that it magically had like 33 upvotes, which is like, HOW?! There is only 1 person using this software, and that's me! So I click on my map, it opens it, but it's glitched! Can't play it that way either! I click on someone else's map. Glitched too! You can't even play other peoples "games" on here without the engine just breaking everything! This is just, just wow. This is a piss poor excuse for an "Early Access" engine, especially for the asking price of $10!! Even for the maybe 20 cents I spent on a key, this was a giant rip off. Do NOT spend $10 on this! This engine is worthless. Just about any other engine out there is better. Oh but Ayth, making a game engine is so hard! Yes, I know that. I've helped make a vastly more demanding engine than this, and it was leagues better than this trash. Do Not Buy! If you've ever wanted to make a game it's pretty likely you've encountered Unity rather early. It's free, very approachable even by newbies and offers about anything you might want to create a video game. While it's certainly up for debate if Unreal Engine isn't the better choice there's no question that Unity does it's job well enough as is testament by many great professional studios as well as indies using it. Oh, and it's free even for commercial projects until you hit a certain income level. So ... why make a terrible, extremely limited game engine in Unity and try to sell it on Steam for money? Yeah, I don't know either. Especially when you look at the downsides: - no standalone project generation: all "games" made with HEDE ship with the complete HEDE engine including all assets - no asset optimization: the install size is huge even for a "game" with sprite graphics and just one screen - limited choice: you can't import assets you want but are limited to what HEDE includes - extremely limited game play functions: basically you got the "choice" between making a terrible "Where's Waldo" style game or an equally terrible platformer - insanely convoluted interface: you'll be hard-pressed to even make the most basic gameplay using HEDE - no intellectual property freedom: everything is saved on the server of the Russian developer - on top of that it's not even free Spare your money and sanity and just say "NO" to this piece of crap. Learn Unity or Unreal instead if you really want to make games. AVG antivirus detected threat and blocked HEDE GAME ENGINE.exe because it was infected with IDP.Generic. And despite this, the program somehow miraculously launched, but the interface was not user friendly. There was no tutorial as to what you have to do. All you could do was drag and drop some images in the black screen. Perhaps the antivirus had blocked some components of the program as a safety measure or maybe the program was designed by developers in such fashion. I am not so sure it is really infected or not, but I have never encountered such an issue any game or program I have used on Steam. It's sad because I really don't like posting negative reviews. :( EDIT: After a lot of thinking, I have come to realize that certainly there is one redeeming feature of the software. Pixel art is pretty decent. I mean it is actually quite good. Again I don't know about the licensing info pertaining them. Still, if the pixel art can be used to make games using this software, the RPG games could be pretty damn good. Because it is Early Access version, I will possibly come to reevaluate the game at some future date and hopefully at that time, I will turn the review to positive, if the issues are fixed.
Stars received: 2/10 Overview: junk to make even more junk xD
i guess you might be able to do something but i wouldn't lmao
Garbage Game Hub for Garbage Games. Dont bother. Im on a quest of at least trying every game in my library, of which I got plenty from all kinds of bundles, not all though. If you are interested in my journey, check out my other reviews :)
HEDE Game Engine developed and published by Hede is an unusual entry on Steam because it is not a traditional video game but rather a simplified game-creation tool intended to allow users to design their own small 2D experiences. Instead of presenting a story, characters, or structured gameplay, the software functions as a basic editor where players can assemble levels, place sprites, and experiment with simple mechanics. Its primary goal appears to be making the process of creating a tiny game accessible to beginners who may have no prior experience with game development. At its core, the engine allows users to construct simple platform-style games using a collection of sprites and objects. Players can select visual assets, place them within a map, and define certain elements as characters, collectibles, or objectives. The player-controlled character typically moves using standard keyboard controls such as WASD, navigating through environments filled with platforms or obstacles while collecting coins or items before reaching a designated goal. In essence, the engine provides the building blocks required to assemble a very basic platformer. The workflow is designed to be straightforward so that users can quickly begin experimenting with their own creations. Instead of requiring programming knowledge or complicated scripting systems, the engine allows players to configure basic gameplay elements through simple object placement and settings. A user can place a character sprite, add collectible objects, set a finishing point, and immediately test the level within the editor. This immediate feedback loop encourages experimentation and allows beginners to see the results of their design decisions almost instantly. One of the ideas behind the software is that users can share their creations with others. In theory, players can design their own small games and distribute them to friends or the wider community. The engine also suggests the possibility of publishing user-created content through revenue sharing, creating a platform where creators might potentially release simple projects made using the tool. This concept resembles other user-generated content platforms where players build games for others to experience. However, while the idea of a beginner-friendly game engine is appealing, the execution reveals several limitations. The tools available in the editor are extremely basic compared to established development environments such as Unity or Unreal Engine. The engine primarily supports very simple 2D mechanics and lacks advanced features like complex physics systems, scripting languages, animation tools, or robust level design options. As a result, the kinds of games that can be created with the software tend to remain small and mechanically limited. The interface of the editor also reflects its modest scope. The menus and layout are functional but minimal, providing only the most essential tools needed to place objects and configure basic interactions. While this simplicity helps reduce the learning curve for beginners, it also means that the software lacks the refinement and depth that many creators expect from modern game development tools. Another unusual aspect of the software is its presence on Steam as a downloadable product among regular games. Because most Steam users browse the platform looking for games to play, encountering a game engine in the store can feel somewhat unexpected. Players who download the software expecting a traditional game may initially feel confused when they realize that the program requires them to create their own content rather than providing a ready-made experience. Despite these limitations, the engine still has a small educational value. For individuals curious about how games are constructed, experimenting with object placement, level layout, and character behavior can provide insight into the basic principles of game design. Seeing how simple rules and interactions produce a playable environment can help beginners understand the foundations of game mechanics in an approachable way. The concept also reflects a broader trend within gaming toward user-generated content platforms where creativity is encouraged. While the HEDE Game Engine operates on a much smaller scale than major engines, it still embodies the idea that game creation can be accessible to anyone willing to experiment with simple tools. Ultimately, HEDE Game Engine works best as a lightweight creative sandbox rather than a full development platform. Its simplicity makes it approachable for newcomers who want to experiment with building a small platform-style game without dealing with complex programming systems. However, its limited functionality and basic interface prevent it from competing with more advanced engines used by professional developers. For players interested purely in experimentation or learning the very basics of level design, the software may provide a brief introduction to the creative side of game development. For those seeking a robust tool capable of producing more sophisticated projects, however, the engine will likely feel too limited to meet their expectations. Rating: 5/10
