Heart Clicker is a very simple idle game built around one thing, collecting as many hearts as I possibly can. I start by clicking to generate hearts, then spend what I earn on upgrades that make the whole process faster. After a while I do not need to click nearly as much because the idle systems start producing hearts for me. It is a very basic idea, but I think it works because I can understand everything within a few minutes and immediately see my numbers going up. The progression is probably the best part for me. I can keep buying upgrades to increase my heart production, then come back later and find that I have earned more while I was away. There are also heart skins and other cosmetic items to unlock, which give me something extra to collect beyond the main number on the screen. The game also has 18 Steam achievements covering things like reaching large heart totals and making a certain number of clicks. None of this is especially complicated, but it gives the simple loop a little more structure. I also like the visual style more than I expected. The hearts are colourful and cute, and the interface is kept simple enough that I can see what I am buying without having to dig through loads of menus. There is a slightly darker side to the game underneath the cheerful presentation too, which gives it a bit more personality than a completely generic clicker. I would not call the presentation amazing, but it fits what the game is trying to do and does not get in the way of the main progression. The biggest weakness is that there is only so much I can do. Once I understand the upgrades and idle progression, I am basically repeating the same process of collecting hearts and spending them to make more hearts. There are not complicated strategies or lots of different systems for me to experiment with, so the game can become repetitive fairly quickly. The fact that items are earned over time gives me another reason to check back, but it does not completely solve the lack of variety. I think the free price helps a lot here. I am not being asked to buy the actual game before I can see whether I enjoy this type of idle experience, and the core features are available without paying. There is a separate soundtrack for anyone who wants it, but I can play the main game without it. That makes the limited gameplay easier for me to accept because I am looking at this as a small free clicker rather than expecting the amount of content I would get from a much bigger paid game. The idle side is also useful when I do not want something that demands my full attention. I can click for a while, make some upgrades and then leave it running while I do something else. Coming back to a larger heart total is satisfying in the way these games are supposed to be. At the same time, I would not want to spend long uninterrupted sessions with it because there simply is not enough active gameplay to justify that. It works much better as something I check occasionally. Overall, Heart Clicker is a decent little idle game that understands its own limitations. I like the simple upgrade system, automatic heart production, cosmetics, achievements and colourful presentation, and the fact that the main game is free makes it easy for me to recommend as a quick time killer. The lack of deeper mechanics and the repetitive nature of the progression stop it from reaching the higher ratings I give to more substantial clicker games. It does what it sets out to do without making things unnecessarily complicated, but I would need more variety for it to hold my attention for much longer. Rating: 6.8/10
