Martins having an episode again.

Hashtag Dungeon isn't a bad game but it has three big flaws; You can't fire diagonally, it requires excessive grinding and core gameplay is boring due to a lack of skills. The graphics are cute and there's a bunch of different environments and enemies. It had potential in that regard. If they replaced the boring upgrade system with skill trees with different attacks it would almost be worthwhile.
Decent at best. The upgrade system lets you upgrade as you kill enemies and collect gold, but killing higher difficulty/higher health monsters for more gold requires you to repetitively run around rooms and playing at lower difficulties doesn't give you much gold for upgrades. Monsters can spawn on top of you way too often and you can't aim diagonally, which will keep your progress slow when taking on higher difficulties with extra monster health. Increasing base DPS after completing dungeons is thus minimal, which means that it will probably take you too many dungeons to take on difficulty 50. Class selection and classes overall are not balanced, with some classes requiring you to spend extra gold to catch up on DPS. You will have to go back to main menu and refresh the class selection and hope for classes with many abilities. Also, too often you get the same boss at end of a dungeon. I don't like the soundtrack or dungeon building with Twitter. I would like the boss battles and fighting more if they were better balanced (so no unavoidable Infernal Organ lasers when paired with shots or spawned units) and easier to do without much any grinding. Some enemy and player attacks should definitely be more easily noticeable as well. The game seems to have some bugs. You might get an error message that requires you to close the game after dying or completing a dungeon. I decided to not recommend the game after getting too many enemies to spawn on top of me.
Conceptually, I quite liked this game. I had a quick go during an indie showcase near me when it was still in-dev, and bought it on release. And it wasn't bad; the art definitely could've done with a sprucing-up, and I seem to remember occasional impossible dungeons, but overall, pretty good for the price. In 2020, I cannot recommend this game, at all. The problem? It doesn't actually work anymore. On trying to load up the list of user dungeons, names appear for a fraction of a second, and are then just replaced with a permanent hourglass animation that never goes. Presumably, the twitter integration broke at some point, and the devs either couldn't, or just didn't, fix it. It's a game based around level creation and sharing where you can't share levels anymore. It's stupid, because (even if changes to the Twitter api mean using it directly is no longer possible), there are obvious other avenues to pursue. Include a field to let people manually import/export levels by copy-pasting tweets. Include a button to bring up a twitter page, with the relevant search parameters in. Heck, drop the twitter-specific aspect, and run an AWS or Azure instance specific to the game, and use that instead. It wouldn't be all that costly, for what is about the most basic SQL setup imaginable. It's, what, 5 fields? Level name, author name, date uploaded, play count, and a 140-character-at-most (this was built for pre-280 character Twitter) text field for the level code itself? It's one table, maybe 2 indices, with one or two views and a stored procedure, depending on how you want to handle searching/uploading. And I can't imagine there're more than a couple thousands levels out there at the moment, this is really small scale stuff. I could, no word of a lie, set the whole thing up in an hour, tops, probably including importing all the existing levels from Twitter. I'm pretty sure it would cost pennies a day. ...Got away from myself there a little. The point is, the core functionality of the game just doesn't exist anymore, and that's a crying shame. The random dungeons and "horde mode" are there, which is something, but at that point you're just buying a top-down room-based action roguelike, and there's no reason to get this one when there's The Binding Of Isaac, or Enter The Gungeon, or any number of excellent similar games out there. That said, it looks like Hashtag Dungeon is no longer available for purchase, which seems like a really weird option compared to what can't be more than a day's work to patch up, even with the above remove-Twitter-integration-entirely option, but hey, its their game. Or, y'know, was.
This is a very interesting concept. Having played the game I like the advancement that is possible. On the negative side though, I dislike that I am able to get stuck on rocks in the middle of the screen (and gold despawning). But overall the game is quite enjoyable. Would love to see an update or two though.
I got this game as a gift from a friend for my birthday. The list of player generated dungeons loads for half a second and vanishes before I can even click on a level to try it out. When I try a generated dungeon, it doesn't let me select a character or a difficulty and immediately puts me into play with no way to shoot a weapon (I've hit nearly every key on my keyboard). Unless I can figure out how to play (other than moving and dying), seems like a waste of money. Update: The randomly generated dungeon let me select a character and gave me a weapon, so I can at least attack this time. Music is cool, but still seems a little on the dull side.
If you like Bindings of Isaac, you will also like this game. Though, I still prefer Bindings of Isaac, to be honest. :D
Nice little game. A game which I could easily dawdle hours away on, providing fun with out a heavy investment. Having player-generated dungeons means there's always a chance of finding new gems of level design.
Tags: Topdown - Isaaclike Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: No resolutions support. Cannot shoot diagonals, similar to Isaac. Controls floaty. Progression and foe balance seems like it needs more testing. Next to no animation to anything. Fire button gets stuck and firing non stop on occasions.
