Haiki is a fiercely focused precision platformer that wears its difficulty as a badge of honor and builds its entire identity around mastery through repetition. Developed by Richard Hörnig and published by Application Systems Heidelberg, the game introduces itself with a darkly humorous premise in which the protagonist is literally reduced to a severed head, forced to bounce, jump, and wall-climb through hostile environments in order to reclaim what was lost. This absurd setup immediately establishes the tone: Haiki is self-aware, slightly irreverent, and unapologetically committed to challenging the player at every turn. At its core, Haiki is all about movement purity. Controls are sharp, responsive, and deliberately unforgiving, demanding exact timing and precise execution. Every jump, wall bounce, and directional adjustment must be intentional, as the game offers very little margin for error. Hazards such as spikes, lasers, crushing traps, and instant-death falls are placed with surgical intent, ensuring that progress comes not from luck but from understanding patterns and refining muscle memory. Death is frequent and expected, yet respawns are fast enough to keep frustration from overwhelming the experience, encouraging players to immediately try again armed with slightly better knowledge. What truly distinguishes Haiki from other demanding platformers is its color-shifting mechanic, which allows the player to alter the state of the world itself. By switching colors, certain platforms or hazards vanish while others appear, fundamentally changing the layout of a level in real time. This mechanic is not merely an occasional gimmick but a core pillar of the game’s design, woven deeply into its most complex challenges. Players are often required to change colors mid-jump or during fast movement sequences, forcing them to juggle spatial awareness, timing, and world manipulation simultaneously. The result is a layered challenge that tests both reflexes and mental coordination, elevating the platforming beyond simple mechanical execution. Level design is relentlessly intentional, with each stage crafted to teach, test, and then push the player’s understanding of the game’s systems. Early levels serve as harsh but fair introductions, gradually layering complexity as new mechanics are introduced. As the game progresses, stages become denser and more demanding, frequently requiring long sequences of near-perfect inputs to reach the next checkpoint. The difficulty curve is steep but consistent, ensuring that each new challenge feels like a logical escalation rather than an unfair spike. Completing later levels delivers a strong sense of accomplishment precisely because success is earned through persistence and improvement. Visually, Haiki adopts a clean and stylized aesthetic that prioritizes readability over decorative excess. Environments are colorful and varied, with distinct visual identities across the game’s different worlds, yet they remain uncluttered enough to ensure hazards and platforms are always clearly visible. The art direction complements the color-switching mechanic, making it easy to recognize which elements are active or inactive at any given moment. Character animations are minimal but expressive, reinforcing the game’s slightly absurd tone without distracting from the gameplay itself. The game’s presentation is further enhanced by a soundtrack that supports its intense rhythm without overwhelming the player. Music and sound effects are tightly synchronized with movement and hazards, subtly reinforcing timing and momentum. Audio cues provide useful feedback during high-pressure sequences, helping players stay in sync with the game’s pace even as difficulty escalates. While the sound design is not flashy, it is purposeful and well-matched to the experience Haiki aims to deliver. Narratively, Haiki keeps things light and deliberately secondary to gameplay. The story serves more as a thematic wrapper than a driving force, offering just enough motivation to contextualize progression without interrupting the action. Small touches of humor, such as cosmetic hats and tongue-in-cheek cutscenes, help break up the intensity and give the game personality. These elements provide moments of levity that contrast nicely with the relentless challenge, reminding players that the game is meant to be punishing but not joyless. That said, Haiki is not designed for everyone. Its difficulty is uncompromising, and players looking for a relaxed or narrative-heavy platformer may find the constant cycle of failure exhausting rather than motivating. There are few concessions made for accessibility, and success depends almost entirely on the player’s willingness to practice, adapt, and persevere. For some, this design philosophy will feel exhilarating; for others, it may feel exclusionary. Ultimately, Haiki stands as a confident and uncompromising entry in the precision platformer genre. It succeeds by fully committing to its vision: tight controls, demanding level design, and a clever world-manipulation mechanic that adds genuine depth to its challenges. For players who thrive on difficult games that reward persistence and precision, Haiki offers a deeply satisfying experience where every cleared obstacle feels earned and every victory is hard-fought. Rating: 7/10
Neat controls and good looking but not confusing style :)
玩上头了,到后面熟悉操作后会越来越简单的,对于我这种时不时会犯音游节奏性手癖的不太友好(抹泪)
i like it
Good Game!
Absolutely fantastic game!
