Guppy

This was the most stressful experience of my life!!! I thought I would just be a cute flappy-tailed little guppy and then these big frickin' black fish come along and KILL ME!!! I screamed!!! Really loud!!! :( I'm so tense right now, I just wanted to swim around in circles and make friends with other fish!!! :'(

Guppy is a minimalist/pastel presented 2D top down "fish simulator" as you swim around an aquatic environment with a unique control mechanism that involves pressing left and right arrow keys to swish your tail around, which both propels and steers you. The aim of the game is to eat as many insects (one point per bug) until the larger black fish eats you. Evading is hampered by the somewhat frustrating presence of invisible walls and lack of meaningful landscape in the environment. The art work is spartan but okay, I guess, at least it's not 2D retro pixel "art", but then neither is it approaching the photorealistic visuals that modern gaming PCs are capable of. Problematically, resolution and controls are locked, and there's no graphics tweaks at all, so there's no way to improve the quality of the visuals, and the locked controls may make the game inaccessible to some. These minimum requirements for any modern PC game are not met here, this feels more like it should be a mobile app than a serious PC game, so that makes this impossible to recommend.

[list] [*] Почнімо з того, що гра підтримує геймпади, тож можна зручно вмоститися в кріслі й повністю зануритися в роль маленької рибки, яка намагається вижити в жорстокому світі. Попри те, що це аркада, керуємо ми нашим морським другом усього двома кнопками, які відповідають за рух хвоста в різні боки – саме завдяки цьому рибка пливе. Що тут потрібно робити? Все дуже просто. Треба збирати мух – місцеву їжу, яка додає очки в загальний рахунок і дозволяє похвалитися тим, як довго ви протрималися. Водночас доведеться тікати від великих чорних риб, які тільки й чекають, щоб вас зжерти. Більше в грі майже нічого немає: лише сама механіка плавання, збір їжі, уникнення хижаків, таблиця лідерів і кілька налаштувань. [*] Візуально все виглядає доволі приємно. Акварельні кольори не ріжуть очі й не викликають відрази, картинка яскрава, але в міру. Карта тут одна й та сама, а межі простору досить жорстко обмежені, що забирає в гравця відчуття тієї самої свободи, якої так часто хочеться в іграх. [/list] Вердикт: [i]непогана невелика гра для вечірнього відпочинку. Вона коштує копійки, тож цілком можна взяти й подивитися, що це за «фрукт».[/i] Оцінка:[b] 7/10[/b]. Guppy is a really cool, zen-like, casual, indie game. Basically you are a guppy in a guppy pond and you need to swim around and live your life without getting eaten by the bigger fish. You can play with or without predators which will give you an endless zen experience and even better, it has local multiplayer. The screen will split when you are both too far away to fit on the one screen. The game has been made with a very nice water colour art design and the final thing I'd like to mention is the fish movement system. Basically you move cursors left and right and the fish swings it's tail in unison. The more you do it the faster he goes. Variations of this allow you to go left and right. It's a really fun system to use and master but I do it no justice in the video because I currently have a slightly faulty keyboard that is missing right arrow strikes almost 50% of the time. My new K.B. is on it's way but I think I showed it effectively enough to post this video. The further in I got the more responsive my K.B. got.
