Both simple and deep ARPG, easy to get overwhelmed but still great

Great aRPG that doesn't have overwhelming mechanics. Feels like a spiritual successor to D2.

There is a reason this game has so many positive reviews. With 230 hours in the game I have made a new run of the game a fair share of times. It's hard to find a better classic ARPG that has done everything correct. It's even getting an update in 2026 while being a 10 year old game - that's crazy. The developers are crazy dedicated and its a lot more fun to play with your friends if you had some.

I bought Grim Dawn during the Steam Summer Sale because I was looking for something that plays like POE, POE2, and Last Epoch. What I care about most is how a game physically plays: isometric view, mouse movement, skill buttons, lots of loot, and no WASD or controller required. Grim Dawn checks all of those boxes. It has a lot of what I like about POE/POE2: loot constantly dropping, damage types and resistances, components on gear, skill trees, Devotions, and plenty of ways to build a character. But the world feels more like an actual place I'm traveling through instead of moving through relatively linear campaign zones. There are towns and NPCs, factions and reputation, quests, dialogue choices that can have consequences later, merchants you can encounter because of earlier decisions, little stories scattered around the world, and a lot of "what's over there?" exploration. It actually gives me a little bit of a WoW feeling because of that world and questing, but without the biggest drawback of WoW for me: I don't need anybody else to play it. I can explore, quest, build characters, collect entirely too much loot, and play the whole thing at my own pace. If you like the gameplay of POE/POE2 or Last Epoch but want more of that RPG/world-exploration feeling, Grim Dawn is absolutely worth trying. Also, I bought it thinking I was getting one new game to play. I now have multiple characters because apparently additional characters are a perfectly reasonable solution to running out of storage space. So that's going well.
