Grey Block has a very well done story that to me is the only saving grace to this game. I'm a big stealth genre fan and this is the main feature of the game besides the few hacking puzzles. I haven't gotten to far into the game (1.4 hrs), but I believe that is were I will leave it. the reason being: 1. The camera is just to janky for a stealth based game. Your character just doesn't feel right when controlling him. You will run into the other character in the game and not be able to see sometimes. 2. The character animations turn me off. I understand it's a Indie title, but I just lose interest in what they are saying do to the poor facial animations. Plus they are rather ugly! 3. The overall gameplay just doesn't feel comfortable for what you a trying to do. To many times I thought I had moved far enough away from any security only to have them pop up outta what seemed like nowhere to knock me out. So to put it simply, I don't believe the game is worth the $19.99 price tag it carries. I could over look some of these issues if it was more like $9.99. For what they are asking I would say wait for a sale if you are interested in checking out Grey Block.
Asylum. Do you know that this stands for „Adventure Syndrome Leading to Ultimate Madness“? In other words, each time we hear the Word ASYLUM, we are thinking of a Psychatric Hospital, didn´t we? Yes, i know, we are also thinking about THE ASYLUM, who did the great Sharknado Series (I love them). In 1981 Med Systems Software released a Game called ASYLUM. A Text Adventure, where you have to escape a Psychatric Hospital. Over the Years we found many "Asylums" in Games. Mostly abandoned and with dark, dark Secrets. One of the impressived ones was in UNTIL DAWN. So here we are another time. Welcome to GREY BLOCK. You are Theo Church and in the Beginning of the Game you find yourself in the Green Valley Psychiatric Hospital. After the nice done Introduction, you know, that you should leave this Hospital. QUICKLY! With the help of Nikki Salzano, you friend who broke in at Night to help you, you have to find a Way out and reveal many Secrets i don´t want to Spoiler, because GREY BLOCK has a really exciting Story to tell. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2885414824 GREY BLOCK is mostly a Stealth Game. To be honest, i´m normally no fan of Stealth Games, you know Solid Snake and Sam Fisher are doing this in their Games, but the "Asylum" Scenario got my Interest. So i started and was fascinated from the first Moment on, because of this special atmosphere. Your Primary Target is to escape the "Asylum". You are doing this by making your way free. This means turning off cameras, outsmarting security guards and staff, cracking door locks and always being on guard. And of course finding out why you are there. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2885415032 GREY BLOCK has a nice Tutorial, that shows you everything you need to know before leaving you on your own. This Game has some nice Mechanics. If you are making noise, the Guards will investigate it. Oh well, and if a Nurse spot you, she will try to alert the Guards. You are also able to listen through walls via Mode, what is very usefull, if you are planning to enter or leaving a Room. Collecting Information will slowly unfold the full Story, similar like in the Game VALLEY, where you also didn´t know anything in the Beginning, but find out Step by Step through Notes. And yes, it is a good Story that has higher reaches then you may think. You can also use the Hospitals Equipment for your own Advantage. Computer, Cameras, everything is possible. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2885415202 The game has very atmospherice graphics and sounds that give you the impression that you are really sneaking around in a hospital. The controls are well implemented but you have to get used to it. Oh, by the Way, you can also choose the way of the Gun, when getting a Pistol, but remember, you are not Solid Snake or Sam Fischer, you are a normal Person without military Background, so, be careful on your Choices. And don´t forget, Actions have consequences. Keep that in Mind, while you play it. A big thanks to the Developer for inviting me into this really nice Game. I never played anything like that before. GREY BLOCK may not be for everybody, but if you give it a Try, you will get an exciting and atmospheric Experience. Thank you for Reading. I featured this game on my channel, and I encourage you to check it out if you're curious about this game. Thanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ4saVadllo I'm honored to review this game. This is an intelligent and intriguing game for many reasons. Not only is it rich in diverse gameplay modes, varying from 3D stealth action to hacking computer terminals, it is also a legitimate and refreshingly different storyline. The animation, 3D modeling, and puzzle mechanics are very high quality. If you like dark psychological games that involve conspiracy and good dialogue, seriously, check this out, you will not be disappointed.
Great atmosphere, quality sound design, solid stealth. My favorite implementation of lock picking in a game.
Grey Block is a prisoner escape style third person story game that shares many elements with other games in the stealth category. If you like games like Little Nightmares then I'm sure you'll love this game!
Stigma against mental illness is a scourge with many faces, and the medical community wears a number of those faces. - Elyn R. Saks

Sum-Up

In-depth analysis further down.

[th]🟩 Pros[/th] [th]🟥 Cons[/th]

• An interesting story about mental health. • Hacking feels complicated somewhat, but once you complete it you kinda feel good about yourself. • Developer listens and fixes bugs I've encountered in my playthroughs. • A few bugs and glitches, but much better at this point in time. You are given a few options where you can play either aggressively or stealthfully. This will overall change the final score of each run.

💵 Is it worth buying? Yes, but I'd consider getting it at a discount or at full price if you wish to support this solo developer.

🎮 Steam Deck Compatibility Tested it and it runs smoothly. The game needs a bit more work with changing settings using a controller as it's very difficult to click off and often times I found myself restarting the game on my Steam Deck. Nevertheless, I would like to give this game a second chance in a few months if the developer decides to go over the issues and polish this game down a bit more.

[i] Check our Curator Page for short reviews. Being more focused on telling a short story, it offers players on each level to explore the area, collect items and understand more the story. The game offers several ways to complete it, either by using violence and brute force or by going in a much stealthier approach without being detected and hacking your way through. Hacking is somewhat difficult at the very beginning until you get used to finding passwords and using them to open folders, e-mails, or bin files to get further access. Thanks to Steam new feature where you can write notes, it's much easier than before to keep track of the passwords you find. Although it's a stealth game, I find the lack of sprinting or adjusting your stealth speed after completing the game once a bit slow, but thanks to the game being rather short, it's acceptable. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2980194544
😄 Fun:
Surprisingly I had fun with the game and I thought the story was interesting. I've worked as a carer in the past and looked after patients with mental disabilities. I knew exactly what this was about and was happy to try it out, but I wish it was more polished so I could have a smoother experience.
🏞 Visuals & Presentation:
The game levels look pretty good. There's good reflection and lighting in some areas. The characters don't look spectacular except for the first woman who acts as a nurse, interviewing Theo. Facial animation has not been an issue with me. I've played games without a single facial animation and I've enjoyed it. I think there's room for improvement, but should not turn people away just for that. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2979695611
🔊 Sound & Voice-Acting:
Music is rather decent and at the very end there's one track I've actually enjoyed it and I wish it was used more throughout the critical moments in the game, but since the game is rather short, I thought it was alright. Voice acting is not done by professionals, but I can fully understand it and honestly, I've enjoyed it as it was. Often times I enjoy less a game because it lacks voice-over. Because this one had it I'd give it a plus.
📖 Story & Writing:
The story was rather interesting and dabbled in the fascinating world of mental disorders. You play as Theo, a patient at this facility who negates that he is rightfully placed in that institution and claims he was set up. With the help of Nikki, they both try their way to escape and find evidence to incriminate and understand better about why he is there and how he can escape. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2979695366
🧵 Length & Difficulty:
The game takes roughly about 4-5 hours to complete. It could be less, depending on how well you pick up clues and resolve them. It's a rather basic stealth with some nice touches of modernism where you can detect enemies through walls, making the whole experience a lot easier. The most difficult part is hacking and figuring out where is the location of a password. You're required to read in order to not get stuck.
⭕Final Verdict:
GREY BLOCK is a game that I am grateful to experience. After reading that this game was developed by a single developer I honestly felt bad for giving it initially a negative review, but after reporting my problems and noticing that the developer is set to correct the bugs and improve the game, I've decided to be less critical with my review, since this is an ambitious project worked by just a solo developer with an inspiring story and a passion to learn, grow and improve. It's not a perfect game and is flawed still by some bugs, weird glitches, but if you're like me and want to support the developer, you might enjoy this title.
