Currently NOT RECOMMENDED The game is completely ruined by quest-breaking bugs. I spent around 5 hours trying to progress, but multiple quests simply cannot be completed because required dialogue options do not appear, and quest objectives sometimes do not register. For example: * **The Price of Magic** — after finding the two Wolf Claws and the parchment, the required dialogue does not appear, making further progression impossible. * **Finding Neko** — the required dialogue with the cook does not appear. I eventually found Neko's body myself, reported it to Fletcher, and the quest still wasn't completed. These are not minor bugs that can be ignored. They directly break quests and prevent normal progression through the game. I don't mind occasional bugs in a game, especially a large RPG, but when NPC dialogue simply doesn't trigger and completed objectives aren't recognized, the game becomes impossible to play properly. I really wanted to enjoy Gothic 1 Remake, but in its current state I cannot recommend it. I hope these issues are fixed soon, because right now the technical problems are seriously damaging the experience.
Rating: ★★★ - Good Time Played: 2 hours Difficulty: Novice Gameplay: - The opening deliberately makes you weak and the world and characters makes sure you feel it (Yes, even on the easiest difficulty). You land in the colony with nothing, get pushed around, and the first hour is largely about learning to survive rather than progress. That's a design choice, not a flaw, but it's genuinely rough. - Combat is directional and timing-based with each weapon category feeling distinctly different in weight and pacing. Button-mashing gets you killed immediately. The central mechanic is timing the recovery window after a missed swing where you stand frozen while the enemy responds. Learning to respect that gap is everything. - There's no mini-map and no quest markers. You navigate by talking to people, reading the landscape, and remembering what NPCs tell you. In 2026 this feels almost confrontational, but it also means conversations carry actual weight. - Combat feels clunky in the opening hours intentionally. Your character is supposed to be an untrained prisoner, and as you invest learning points with trainers, your animations and effectiveness visibly improve. I didn't see much in my 2 hours so whether the system earns its design remains to be seen. - The lack of guidance can be deeply frustrating early on. Few modern games would dare embrace such an approach, and that is both the remake's greatest strength and one of its biggest weaknesses. Story\Dialogue: - The story starts small and stays grounded. There's no "chosen one" prophecy waiting for you. You are a nuisance with a letter, and the world treats you accordingly. That restraint in the opening is surprisingly effective. - You explore a dark, unforgiving world, meet some memorable characters and complete quests. Diego is the first real character you meet and he's written well enough to immediately establish the tone of the whole world. Someone you want to stick close to. - You talk to people because those conversations contain actual information rather than decorative flavour text. The game forces you to treat dialogue as a navigation tool, which changes how you engage with it. - The three-faction structure (Old Camp, New Camp, Swamp Camp) is introduced organically through conversation, which means your first alignment choices feel like real social decisions rather than a character builder screen. Graphics\Music: - Brown and grey-green colours prevail in the first few areas, plunging you into melancholy. - The score in the opening hours is atmospheric and restrained, leaning on ambient tension rather than bombast. It fits the world without calling attention to itself. - Even while playing on modest settings, the framerate doesn't stay stable for long. There are buggy animations, collision traps, and plenty of other annoyances, though nothing outright kills progress in the first two hours. Before you Buy: - So far I feel it's only best for patient RPG players who enjoy handcrafted worlds with a large tolerance for jank and unfair difficulty, emergent social systems, and earning progress the long and hard way, especially if the original Gothic, Dark Souls, or STALKER games are in your favourites list. If you need fluid combat, quest markers, or a game that explains itself, look elsewhere. - Parry is not available when you start. It's taught by Scatty, near the fighting pit in the Old Camp, for 20 LP and 200 Ore. Getting there and unlocking it should be your first real goal. - Only named NPCs matter for quests. Unnamed characters labelled "Digger" or "Guard" are filler. When you reach a new area, talk to every named NPC. - Save manually before every fight or area encounter, before interacting with NPCs you haven't spoken to yet, and before any theft attempt. The autosave system is not frequent enough to protect you from bad combat luck or a conversation that spirals into a fight you cannot win. - Start with young scavengers and molerats only. Humans and other animals are much more dangerous than they look. Pull single enemies away from a group and never engage packs.
Great exploration and setting. Was great walking around and looking into every nook. A tad janky like the original and some crashes but nothing too bad. Turned some settings down
The new golden standard for remakes.

Long-time Gothic fan here
I've played the original Gothic games in 2000s and have been playing them since. Gothic Remake is a faithful remake, that much is true. It's a very close remake in fact - some things should have been modernized. There is a small but glaring issue - health replenishment options. Disclaimer: I played as a melee fighter and did not take a mage path. And as a melee fighter, you fight enemies up close and personal, sometimes sustaining injuries that need healing. Healing potions are scarce or expensive to buy/make, and what food you find/make heals for a laughable amount the higher level you are. Now, it's likely that every fight you take damage, sometimes half your health pool or even more, unless you learn enemy attack patterns, have good reaction times to avoid getting hit and lure enemies away to fight them one on one, which is hard to achieve most of the time. Even if you block, there are attacks that break block and you have no time to move away, so, you take damage. And thusly, after every fight you end up with health pool depleted by some amount. In the end, you run out of healing potions and food. And developers made sleeping not replenish health unless you've been awake for some time. I've been told it's X hours of restful sleep for 3X hours of staying awake. You can sleep one night/day/whatever but then you'll have to stay awake for N hours to get restful (restoring health) sleep. Now you're basically stranded and have to minimize damage taken every fight, sometimes by reloading saves many times. Cornered. It's not enjoyable if you ask me. There has to have been a passive health regeneration outside of combat at the very least. I didn't let my food and potions run out of course, but if I didn't optimize every enemy encounter for health lost I would have. It wasn't fun at all. On top of that, you basically HAVE TO invest in the most expensive armor improvements and ignore all others as a fighter to maximize damage mitigation to not use as many healing items so you have even less money for healing items, which are expensive to begin with. In general, playing Gothic Remake was a slog. It took the "run between places a lot" part from the original and preserved it well. I decided to power through the game and I didn't enjoy it very much. A shame, because except all said above it's a good game despite it using UE5. P.S. At some point in the story I had to lockpick a chest UNDERWATER. I had to use that convoluted lockpicking mechanic while running out of air. I was close to quitting at that moment but I managed to fumble it open eventually.
First of all, I never played the original Gothic back in the day, or any of the other games in the series. I never really played Piranha Bytes games either. Like a lot of people, I was skeptical about the remake and honestly didn’t even believe it would come out. And then it did, and OH MY GOD. Not only is it an amazing old-school RPG straight out of the 2000s, it also became one of the biggest gaming discoveries for me. How the hell did I miss this as a kid? I can’t compare this remake to the original, but from what I see, the core is still the same. You’re nobody — some guy in rags, no one cares about you, and you’re free to go wherever you want. The problem is, pretty much everything can kill you around there. The world is extremely hostile, but incredibly well designed — compact, packed with content, and full of smart level design. What will really surprise you is just how far you come — from barely surviving fights with scavengers and a rusty sword to taking on genuinely dangerous enemies with a whole new set of skills. It constantly made me want to explore every corner because there’s almost always something waiting for you. The world feels incredibly alive and logical too. People hide from the rain, flies gather around corpses, animals can even kill one of their own for raising the alarm for no reason, and there are tons of little details like that. On top of that, the game looks beautiful. UE5 obviously helps, but Alkimia Interactive also put a lot of work into the animations: your character has weight, naturally climbs over obstacles, and both magic and combat feel really impactful. It all looks great and feels great to play. There are definitely some bugs, but the developers keep releasing patches and actively fixing them. Personally, I never ran into anything that blocked my progression, and most issues were solved by simply reloading the last save or knocking down an NPC. Either way, it should only get better over time. I highly recommend this game. So far, it’s easily my GOTY this year. I really hope it does well enough for the developers to remake the legendary Gothic 2 next. Fingers crossed. P.S. You can’t change the difficulty once you start, so choose carefully. Even on Hard you can become pretty overpowered by the end if you vacuum up everything like I did, but the beginning is definitely rough. Still, the difficulty feels very fair — sometimes it keeps you out of areas you’re not ready for, and sometimes it gives you a fun challenge where you can use an enemy’s weaknesses to your advantage.
