Mega!
it's funny and sad
The Good, The Not Bad and The Very Ugly
The first Deponia was pretty good, Chaos on Deponia wasn't too bad even with a few bugs, but Goodbye Deponia...That was a freaking frustrating mess. And I'll explain my point in details below.
A few positives points
- Great visuals, cinematics, kicking ass OST, all the art area is a banger. - The majority of the puzzles are fun, and they are a lot of awesome ideas, even for the mini-games (puzzles and mini games are two different things in this game because mini games are skippable sections) - Story is engaging, pretty complex, and it's globally working well. From the first game, I'm honestly curious about the ending of each game. Not for everybody I guess, because of the absurdity surrounding the whole thing, but it works.
But my whole experience has been ruined
- First thing first, the game is broken . You can softlocked yourself and be forced to restart an older save. It doesn't look so bad you would tell me. But just imagine me, playing the game, doing puzzles, walking around, talking to PNJ, and be suddenly unable to continue the game because I was supposed to do one stupid thing thirty minutes ago. And now I can't go back because the game doesn't allow me to do it. You can't just walk on the previous section, you are now forced to restart all over again and pray that you made the good save at the good moment. I also had duplicated objects and sprite display problems. - I previously played point and clicks like Grim Fandango, Machinarium or Syberia as examples. I looked only once at an online solution for one puzzle on Grim Fandango because one particular puzzle was honestly too irrational. But for the rest, I finished the three games without any hints. As for Deponia, and especially Goodbye Deponia, some hints were necessary to continue the game and understand the crazy logic you need to have constantly. - One of my biggest problems is Rufus, the hero of the game. It's the first time that I HATE the main character. He's not evolving, everyone says that he's not a hero, selfish, a douchebag, and they are right! I don't recognize him as an anti hero, he's not interesting and he's just messing around with people for free. That writing choice from the developers is very strange and I don't understand it. - The humor could have been better sometimes, but it was not too bad during the two previous games. On Goodbye Deponia, I had a clear breaking point. For jokes, when you're going on subjects like sexism or racism, you need to be extremely vigilant. Personally, I can laught on all subjects if the jokes are judicious or made for denounce something. But here, there were too much insensitive "jokes" which were just offensive. It's probably because the game writers wanted to make Rufus as a jerk, but the game constantly tells you that you're on the right path doing or saying horrible things, and I think that's absolutely not a good approach. After a while, you just don't want to follow Rufus's journey anymore.
Conclusion
I would recommend pretty easily the first game. But only play the other games if they are on sales and if you want to give it a try. Again, good art, good story, but too illogical, with bugs everywhere and the most hateful main character that I've seen in a long time.
