About
Godot Engine is a feature-packed, cross-platform game engine to create 2D and 3D games from a unified interface. All game engines are bad but some game engines are less bad than others

I have been an absolute dumbass. For all my life, I have been updating my Godot via Itch.io. Nothing special there. Over time, I have been quite tired of using this method in updating and was hoping if Godot would ever publish their engine on steam or any launchers. That's when I found out that Godot had already put it on Steam 10 YEARS AGO....... (as of writing this review) Anyway, this game engine is peak.
Lightweight & Intuitive to use. With customisations, enough to get the job done. A few questionable decisions & general engine direction catering to being `lightweight` first, meaning some more advanced / optional functions are omitted from being merged to the main engine & GDScript (namely traits / interfaces, .opus audio files, etc.) Just my personal takes but, 1. catering to indie / small-scale development while at the same time have less built-in features, meaning you would need to either spend time looking for 3rd party plugins, or make your own wheels (personally I love reinventing the wheel to learn). 2. User friendly GDScript scripting language is after all, a scripting language, which means one would need to know how to code. For experienced programmers, some might find the lack of language features very irritating to work with, while 'need to know how to code' raises the bar of entry for pure beginners. At least for the former case there's always C# and GDExtension. But overall, the engine has great offical docs (while lacking somewhat in advanced level Community Generated Tutorials / Blogs compared to Unity / UE, this is completely understandable and one can always transfer knowledge learned there back to Godot), Intuitive Node / Tree structure, Micro-Service like Engine design, great language support, modern C#, erc., and one can always just fork the engine to add your own stuff / merge pending PRs on your own. I wouldn't say it's 'better' than Unity or UE however, strictly in terms of 'just making the game'. For one, matured Official Asset Stores provide positive feedback loops for creators and developers which snowballs into better development experience when one's primary goal is to 'make games' and maybe sell it to earn profit. Because you know, you have to earn pass the revenue threshold to actually get charged by the game engine, and no offense but, many developers' game are just reskinned platformers / rogue/survivor-likes / visual-novels / walking-sims / shooters, not exactly what one would call innovative and thus, perfect for asset stores. Essentially, choose the right tool(s) for your own objective. For me, it's mostly to learn.
движок не очень крутой
Still no .NET branch on Steam. Why? Who knows. But it means I have to manually update, it means I can't easily track my dev time, it means I can't use the Steam version at all since they're entirely separate builds. People keep asking for it, yet the devs keep ignoring us. Support for GDScript will eventually die out, as is not uncommon for engines that introduce their own god awful in-house language, but the devs are choosing to die on this hill apparently.
Godot is just pure Masochrism. Instead of fixing the dumpsterfire of what they call documentation and fixing autosuggestions in their code editor they add new features. even the most basic stuff like freaking PRINT often just does nothing. no hints like underlining faulty code, error messages that dont explain the problem at all or often nothing at all. in unreal the editor directly tells you that you are a monkey that did a mistake (like it is supposed to) but godot lets you walk in the dark. troubleshooting is (and this is not exaggerated) more then 100 times faster in unreal and unity then it is in godot due to horrible error/print/log message handling and the scripteditor itself. in unreal i can just have multiple prints as a overlay in different colors while runing the game and they almost always do exactly what i except them to do. also it's tiresome to download the engine over and over from their webpage because steam is just tooooo slow with updates. i really hope they just rebuild the entire engine from scratch because hands down their openscource royalty free model is great and the only reason i tried godot.
