About
Gemima brings infuriatingly compelling couch co-op to the classic Sokoban genre! Turns out life in four directons isn't necessarily simpler...
Grab a friend (or play solo for a true test of dexterity!) and take control of apprentices Gemima and Jules in their quest to gather gemstones from the Mine of Mages. They'll have to work together closely to overcome the many traps and obstacles, and use their magical affinities (helpfully depicted by their hair colour) to dig, push, and collect their way to success.
Take your time and think things through - or for the ultimate challenge, coordinate to solve each level before the Mage Mining Company blows the tunnels sky-high.
Many puzzles have more than one solution, and each will take you in a different direction. Stuck on one puzzle? Explore somewhere else! Can you find every nook and cranny of the mine?
Gemima's simple controls mean two players can share a keyboard or controller. Although that will put you within easy reach when you make a mistake...
Puzzles in Gemima range in difficulty from moderate to very challenging. The game has been completed (minus secrets) in 6 hours - do not expect to replicate that. A more typical time for a playthrough is around 20 hours.

8/10 A Sokoban plus Supaplex adventure for two! What is it: A box-pushing, boulder dodging game in which you control two players. Gemima (pink) and Jules (blue) are trapped in a dungeon, and they must keep on exploring, going from room to room, until they can reach the top and go back outside. Each room has colored gems, sand, boxes, boulders, and one or more doors. Opening the doors requires collecting all the gems. The two players and the boxes behave like a classic top-down sokoban, without gravity. The gems and the boulders behave like in Supaplex, rolling down and smashing any unfortunate character that happens to be underneath. The gems are color-coded, with only one of the two characters able to pick them up, but so are some of the doors, crates, boulders, switches and sand. Not only must you solve each level, but you must constantly juggle the positions of the two characters, making sure you leave enough room for them to swap places. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3480683856 The game is very inventive, staying fresh with new gimmicks and level types. Starting with simple rock and box pushing, it goes as far as having a level with multiple instances of each character that can also swap colors. Along the way there are some unique levels, like a maze in the dark, or a huge level that you can only see a little at a time. There are levels you need to solve multiple ways, and secrets, and many popular game references. I even heard a rumor that there might be cake! Some levels have unique shapes, including a giant Baba. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3480682881 You can play this with two hands, or you can invite a friend for a couch co-op. But you have to coordinate really well, since quite often you need to quickly switch places under a boulder, or move in sync, or swap characters. If you play alone or with a friend, there are even more challenges after the regular, “relaxed” version. There's a mode with a total time limit and one with per-level tight time limits. There’s a mode without undo, and a mode with permadeath. And for the ultimate challenge, a permadeath, no undo, time limit mode. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3480682093 Overall, I really enjoyed Gemima and all its levels. It’s fun, challenging, and fresh. How hard is it: Moderate, ★★★☆☆. Finishing the ultimate difficulty mode is a real challenge. How long is it: 30 areas, but each with multiple levels. 4-8 hours to finish the game once, but the challenge modes will add a lot of time retrying all levels. All levels are mandatory, but often there are multiple paths you can choose in case you get stuck in one room and want to come back to it later. Level design: Great! Very varied levels, unique solutions. Quality: Good overall, but lacking settings. Multiple control schemes. Undo (unless you’re playing one of the no-undo challenge modes), but you can’t undo each move, instead collecting a gem creates a new checkpoint. Multiple save slots. Map-like level select, though each “room” can contain several puzzles in a row you can't select individually. Good controls, but not configurable. Only audio settings. Has a “slow mode” for those that find the quick moves needed in some levels too challenging. Cloud saving, progress and challenge achievements. Small, fast and responsive. Worth the price: Yes! Most positive aspect for me: Great variety of levels. Most negative aspect for me: Some level time limits in the “muscle memory” mode are very tight, living up to the “muscle memory” name. What would make it better: Custom level editor and workshop support. Finer grained undo. Configurable controls. Colorblindness accessibility. More settings, at least a fullscreen toggle. Hints. Also consider: Double Trip, Sokoban for two, small but nice. Pushmania, Sokoban for two, much bigger and harder. Supaplex, boulder dashing, gem collecting game. Gemima is a fun spin on the boulderdash formula, mixed with some sokoban-style crate pushing. I've been playing it entirely co-op, over steam remote play, but it would be perfectly feasible to solo instead as there are (so far at least) only limited requirements for simultaneous action. It's got a decent variety of puzzles, and some entertaining (groan-worthy) puns in both the level names and the minimal but cute dialog lines. The most annoying thing is the undo system, which is linked to when you collect gems, but this means that if there are no gems near a difficult section, you don't get any undo points. None of the levels are huge though, so it's not a deal-breaker. There's a slo-mo option on the pause screen which is very helpful for the parts where timing is critical, especially with the lag player 2 sometimes gets over steam remote play. After 4 hours, I would guess I'm a bit over halfway through, which seems like good value for the low asking price.
Brilliant but utterly fiendish! 17 hours plus and still going... Although this is billed as 2 player, it is also absolutely possible to play single player controlling both characters - in fact I probably recommend playing solo as it could be the end of a beautiful relationship otherwise! :0) Overall, Gemima is beautifully put together with cute retro graphics, simple controls, great game play and plenty of puzzles. Although I was fortunate enough to get a free copy, the current price is a total bargain! Grab it now!
Charming and tricky. Thoroughly enjoyed playing through this with my brother, and laughing together at the dumb jokes! (We're onto the DLC now, and that really ramps up the difficulty)
Pretty interesting concept and game, especially for a 2D puzzle. It's nothing fancy, but it's certainly unique in its own way. I'd recommend getting it on sale.
