栖霞日记 is a slice-of-life visual novel that quietly blends warmth, mystery, and cultural identity into a surprisingly immersive experience. Set around the beautiful scenery of Hangzhou’s West Lake, the game follows Sheng Sheng, a university freshman who moves into an old residence known as Qixia Lodge. What begins as a seemingly ordinary story about student life slowly develops into something more mysterious as strange events and hidden secrets surrounding the lodge gradually emerge. Rather than relying on dramatic twists or constant tension, the game focuses on atmosphere, character relationships, and emotional familiarity, creating an experience that feels calm, reflective, and occasionally unsettling beneath its cheerful surface. The strongest aspect of the game is easily its cast of characters and how naturally they interact with one another. The residents of Qixia Lodge are inspired by traditional Hangzhou cuisine, with each character embodying the personality and symbolic traits associated with famous local dishes. This concept initially sounds unusual, but the game treats it with enough sincerity and creativity that it quickly becomes charming instead of gimmicky. Every roommate has distinct quirks, habits, and emotional dynamics that help the shared living space feel lively and believable. Conversations range from playful teasing to heartfelt emotional moments, making the apartment gradually feel like a genuine home rather than just a visual novel setting. Much of the game’s appeal comes from its slow and comfortable pacing. Large portions of the story focus on everyday activities such as shared meals, late-night conversations, campus routines, and the small emotional struggles of university life. Instead of constantly pushing the plot forward, the game allows players to simply spend time with the characters and absorb the atmosphere of their daily lives. This slower structure helps create emotional attachment because the relationships feel naturally developed over time rather than artificially accelerated for dramatic effect. Players who enjoy character-driven storytelling will likely appreciate how much care is placed into making ordinary moments feel meaningful. Visually, the game creates a relaxing and nostalgic atmosphere through its soft anime-inspired art style and detailed environmental design. The backgrounds capture the beauty of Hangzhou with peaceful streets, quiet campus scenery, and picturesque views around West Lake. The interior of Qixia Lodge itself feels cozy and lived-in, helping reinforce the warm communal atmosphere shared between the characters. The presentation may not be technically ambitious, but it consistently succeeds at creating an inviting emotional tone that supports the slice-of-life storytelling perfectly. What makes 栖霞日记 more interesting than a purely comfortable visual novel is the subtle layer of mystery woven throughout the experience. Strange incidents, cryptic hints, and unusual late-night occurrences begin surfacing gradually as the story progresses. The game introduces these darker elements carefully rather than shifting abruptly into full horror or thriller territory. This restrained approach works surprisingly well because the mystery feels like a quiet disturbance beneath an otherwise peaceful world. The combination of warmth and uncertainty creates a unique emotional atmosphere where players remain invested not only because of the character relationships but also because they want to uncover the truth hidden inside Qixia Lodge. The writing does a strong job balancing humor, emotional sincerity, and cultural flavor. Dialogue generally feels natural and relaxed, helping the friendships between characters evolve organically over time. There is a comfortable rhythm to the conversations that makes even simple interactions enjoyable to read. The game also integrates references to Hangzhou culture and cuisine in ways that feel authentic instead of forced. Food becomes both a thematic and emotional centerpiece, reinforcing ideas of comfort, belonging, and shared identity throughout the story. One of the most appealing aspects of the experience is how strongly it embraces its cultural setting. Many visual novels rely on generic school environments or familiar anime archetypes, but 栖霞日记 feels deeply connected to the identity of Hangzhou itself. The food-inspired characters, local scenery, and cultural references give the world a sense of place that makes it stand out from more conventional slice-of-life stories. The game feels personal and grounded in its setting, which helps make the atmosphere more memorable. At the same time, the deliberate pacing may become difficult for players expecting faster narrative progression. The game spends extensive amounts of time on daily life and character interaction before fully committing to its mystery elements. Players looking for constant suspense or dramatic plot twists may feel that the story develops too slowly during certain sections. The gameplay itself is also fairly limited beyond reading dialogue and making occasional choices, meaning the experience depends heavily on whether players connect emotionally with the writing and atmosphere. The mystery component, while intriguing, remains relatively understated for much of the story. Some players may wish the darker themes were explored more aggressively or introduced earlier. However, the slow reveal is clearly intentional because the game prioritizes emotional immersion and attachment before increasing tension. This approach helps the mystery feel more impactful later on, even if it occasionally affects pacing. The soundtrack complements the overall tone extremely well. Gentle background music reinforces the peaceful atmosphere during slice-of-life scenes, while quieter and more ominous tracks subtly emerge as the mystery deepens. The audio design remains understated throughout most of the experience, allowing conversations and emotional moments to remain the primary focus. This restraint helps maintain the game’s calm and reflective mood. Ultimately, 栖霞日记 succeeds because of how sincere and atmospheric it feels. It combines cozy university life, Chinese cultural identity, emotional character writing, and understated mystery into an experience that feels distinct from many standard visual novels. Even when the pacing slows considerably, the warmth of the setting and the charm of the cast make the world enjoyable to spend time in. The game understands that emotional comfort can be just as engaging as dramatic storytelling, and it uses that strength effectively throughout the experience. For players who enjoy slow-paced visual novels centered around friendship, atmosphere, and gradual emotional storytelling, 栖霞日记 offers a charming and memorable journey with a strong cultural identity. Its dialogue-heavy structure and restrained mystery elements may not appeal to everyone, but those willing to immerse themselves in its world will likely find it relaxing, emotionally engaging, and quietly compelling from beginning to end. Rating: 7/10
