Developed by Mista Stories and published by KEMCO, 千里の棋譜 ~現代将棋ミステリー~ distinguishes itself by weaving an investigative drama into the seldom-explored world of professional shogi. Instead of treating the traditional board game as a simple backdrop, the title places it at the center of a layered narrative involving a missing grandmaster, competing ideologies, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on centuries-old traditions. The result is a visual novel that feels more like reading an engrossing mystery novel than playing a conventional game, offering a thoughtful experience that stands apart from many of its contemporaries on Steam. The game's strongest quality is its commitment to storytelling. Every major character has a role to play in the broader mystery, from ambitious professionals seeking recognition to individuals burdened by their past decisions. The script takes its time establishing relationships and motivations, allowing later revelations to carry considerable weight. There is a clear passion behind the writing, particularly in the way it portrays shogi not merely as a pastime, but as a discipline capable of shaping entire lives. Themes of legacy, technological advancement, and personal sacrifice are explored throughout the adventure, giving the narrative a maturity that will resonate with players who appreciate slower, more deliberate storytelling. Visually, the presentation succeeds in creating an immersive atmosphere despite its modest budget. Character illustrations are expressive and memorable, while the various settings effectively capture the modern Japanese environments where much of the story unfolds. The accompanying soundtrack deserves special mention for enhancing moments of tension and introspection, helping transform lengthy dialogue sequences into engaging scenes. While the game lacks extensive animation or interactive elements, its artistic direction and pacing help maintain interest across its substantial runtime. One of the title's most fascinating achievements is how it introduces players to the culture surrounding professional shogi. Even those with little knowledge of the game can gain an appreciation for its strategic depth and significance within Japan. Rather than overwhelming the audience with technical jargon, the narrative gradually contextualizes important concepts and uses them to enrich the overarching mystery. The inclusion of discussions surrounding AI and its impact on competitive play also lends the story a contemporary edge, creating an interesting contrast between tradition and innovation. However, the game's appeal is undeniably specialized. Players expecting puzzles, frequent gameplay mechanics, or branching systems may find the experience lacking. Much of the adventure consists of reading extensive dialogue and following the investigation as it unfolds. Its methodical pacing occasionally becomes a weakness, with certain scenes lingering longer than necessary before advancing the plot. Additionally, the heavy reliance on Japanese language support means accessibility remains limited for international audiences, which is unfortunate given the strength of the narrative. Ultimately, 千里の棋譜 ~現代将棋ミステリー~ is a compelling example of how niche subject matter can become the foundation for an engaging story when handled with confidence and authenticity. Mista Stories has crafted a mystery that is intelligent, character-driven, and unafraid to embrace its unconventional premise. It may not appeal to everyone, particularly those seeking action or gameplay variety, but for fans of visual novels and slow-burning mysteries, it offers a rewarding and memorable journey into the competitive world of modern shogi.
