I've played Infantry Online regularly since 2001, with the occasional break—but I still log in even now, over 20 years later. That said, I do not recommend this game for new or returning players. While the nostalgia is strong, this is no longer the game many of us remember. It is now mostly sustained by long-time league players, and the experience for newcomers is overwhelmingly negative. You'll be instantly outmatched by veterans with decades of experience. You'll likely be excluded from league matches unless you're already skilled, making it hard to improve or participate. New players are frequently mocked or ignored, and the environment is anything but welcoming. The community is extremely toxic. Despite most players being in their 30s or 40s, the behavior often resembles that of immature teenagers. The league is unbalanced, repetitive, and dominated by the same top teams every season. Playstyles are passive and dull, and the league Discord speaks volumes—take a look for yourself. In short: Infantry Online is not new player friendly. Unless there are serious changes—both from developers and especially from the community—I cannot recommend this game to anyone new. The game needs stronger moderation, and frankly, the moderators need moderating themselves. Also worth noting: most of the positive reviews you’ll find are from current, active community members—many of whom are deeply embedded in the league scene. They’re reviewing the experience they get, not the one a new or returning player is likely to have.

If your not apart of the exclusively small 20 person cult that runs this game you'll never even get to actually play any matches. To any newcomers all i can say is i hope you enjoy spectating because that's all you can do really. Most matches are in private "arenas"
Was excited after years to have found this only to be disappointed. Community pretty much keeps new people out and host private games. You can only play skirmish except Tuesday and skirmish is the most uneventful boring thing ever, which only lasts about an hour if that. Don't waste your time.
everytime i login to play the players in a private arena called ovd
Я помню как играл в неё в детстве, но я не помню больше ничего...
I played this in 1999, amazing childhood memories. BRING THIS GAME BACK! THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN BACK IN THE DAY. Timeless game play. Improve the graphics etc., keep everything the same. This is an amazing game. People need to come back to this game.
Best game ever made.
Warning: Third Party Account This game requires you to create a third party "FreeInfantry Account Server" account... there's no valid reason for this in a PC game when SteamWorks is available. This is often done to harvest private data and profile you, with potential sale and transmission of your private data to third parties. The developers will probably argue that you can trust them, but if they were trustworthy they wouldn't demand you create a third party account. This represents a considerable risk to gamers due to the privacy and security implications of developers that wish to bypass Steam and harvest user data. Remember, sometimes if the product is free, YOU are the product.
"FreeInfantry" is an ancient 20+ year old 2.5d shooter with a tacticool military theme. The game is described as isometric, and features action, strategy... which is a nice way to say it's dead, old top down shooting. You participate in team-based combat, capture-the-flag, skirmishes, and other modes, against bots and other players... of which there are a handful of people with either Stockholm Syndrome or not enough money to buy a 3D video card. What gets in my craw is the way the developers describe this as isometric... it isn't! The graphics are from oblique perspective. Personally if you don't understand 2D/3D projection properly you may not be qualified to develop or market video games using either technique. Being over 20 years old, visually, this has some fairly mediocre/dated looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Despite having no up-front cost beyond your privacy, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at less than 100 concurrent players, they couldn't even break three figures, and now you'll have a hard time finding enough people for a full match. Even though it's free. This is a game that's run its course. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
10,000 hours and counting. Not a bad way to spend a few decades. -Assassin "AC"
