About
Lizzy is a girl living in The Boarding, a walled city surrounded by fog. All who live here serve the mysterious Mother Matron, its revered leader who hasn’t been seen in person in many years. Periodically, the Mother Matron selects residents to become Surveyors, tasked with exploring the dark unknown tunnels that lie underground to find the key to a better future for the collective. The odds of survival are slim to none. It is an honor and a death sentence. One day, Lizzy finds herself on the draft...
Using your wits and quick thinking, you must guide Lizzy through the dangers beneath. Will you survive? Will you find Paradise? Or will you be lost to the dark forever?
For Mother Matron is a passion project inspired by Silent Hill, Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, bizarro fiction, and the works of Thomas Ligotti.

an amazing game with impressive story telling with some comedy bits thrown in. it had great setting and world building that honestly leaves me wanting more of the world of The Board itself and how things function and if this is to much hope an ending where we fight but otherwise I love it the way it is.

"For Mother Matron" is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This garbage e-book features, once more, a high school anime club dropout fan-fiction about the author's imaginary anime girlfriend, this one is called "Lizzy". The author wrote this fan fiction about his imaginary anime girlfriend going through edge "darkcore" post apocalyptic urban distopia scenarios because I don't know why... the writing is as garbage as you would expect from a high school anime club dropout fanfiction about someone's imaginary girlfriend. This was slapped together with the godawful Ren'Py visual novel construction kit... enabling terrible authors to publish books as if they were games when otherwise we might have been spared the pollution. So, just like no professional writing took place here, no professional software development took place, either. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. One of the chief problems with failed authors polluting Steam with non-game E-books is that E-books can easily just be presented in a web browser... there's no justification for charging money on Steam for what might as well be a webpage. We don't spend thousands on buying a gaming rig to spend money on Steam for something Chrome or Firefox could do. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the e-book peaked at only 15 concurrent readers... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. The funny thing is, if you wanted to print this book, you'd only need to print 15 copies to satisfy the entire world's demand for it. While this E-book has no up-front cost, you can get better quality, professionally written books and comics for free online (from places like Project Gutenberg) or from public libraries. Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games.
I enjoyed the story and how it's teased to you as opposed to being offered up on a platter. You have to explore the dialogue options and the spaces completely in order to be able to piece together every part of the narrative which I personally prefer. I also really enjoyed the visual aspects of the game lots, the combination of different art mediums paired with the voice acting is a beautiful presentation. The story can become a bit convoluted at times however there are discussions you can read on the community page if you want to understand certain aspects like the inspiration better, and lots of the story itself can be left up to interpretation which I also enjoy. All in all it's a short and sweet experience and if you're looking to kill some time or find the premise interesting I would recommend giving it a try! The only problem I experienced was with the achievements, with the game not giving me the “Surveyor of Legend,” or completion achievement despite meeting all the requirements and rebooting the game + replaying the story to refresh it. Again however Mother Matron is a free game so this small issue is by no means a dealbreaker or should discourage you from giving it a shot and from what I can tell other players haven't had similar issues.

Quite an interesting story and very specific vibes! The narration has such vivid descriptions that truly work in the horror genre without resulting too heavy. Would really love to play another game of yours in the same setting! Happy anniversary!
great game! music and atmosphere were fantastic. i played on the "easiest" setting and still found myself panicking at the timed choices. #livelaughlovemothermatron
