7/5 would pirate this again.
Fly By Knight is a phenomenal game. A great game where your choices mater and has two endings featuring a Bad ending and a True ending. The music slaps as well. Truly a hidden gem among free independent games on the steam store.
The bad ending made me so sad I just had to replay and get the good ending to save my own soul for that heavy weight of a single starving rodent. 21/7 would rate again.

I enjoyed the immediate flair of highlighting UI with the crystal, but it was absent on "Quit," feeling a bit lopsided, which is also how I might describe the control somatic. The speed of vertical traversal, whether it be jumping or flying or via mushroom, feels snappy and satisfying, yet the ground movement feels sluggish by comparison; the effect is exacerbated by the "thud" sound effect for landing feeling uncharacteristic for a tiny bird character. There is a single point where I was required to slash above me to clear a rock, but both the visual and mechanical feedback for the basic slash attack obscure its role here. The camera has an intentional obscuring effect put to use in the fire flower area, although the camera's introduction of the flower itself provided the effect of appearing like a "boss room" where I needed to fly into the crevice and defeat the flower. The game has a clear dedication to its Land inspirations which shines through in the quantity of music defining each zone, however there are other flairs that would have cemented this motivation beyond a shadow of a doubt; actions like displaying a name of an area when you arrive bridges elegantly between the enjoyment of an "open world" and an "elemental zone romp." The Nerve aspects are here largely serving the Land motivations, and the battle gauntlet area has well enough choreography that the spot-troubles in the tutorial aren't as ill-taken. If the experience is meant to feel lopsided it should also feel tailored to that imbalance, with enemies that require me to slash down on them or having that attack do more damage, rather than simply being forced into that input by the level itself. There was a tidal wave of titles within the "streamer bait" slop sphere after Bennet Foddy convinced everyone that trash was actually cool, but he played a dangerous game himself by making his game fun to play. Despite an esoteric control scheme, it has a crunch and depth to it that goes beyond Sexy Hiking, and not many other "Sisyphus-likes" take this double standard into account. Let's contrast with the nearly identical game-feel of Kirby's Dream Land, which uses an infinite number of jumps and a low-risk combat with a two-beat rhythm: swallow and spit. Fly By Knight splits the rhythm into two "measures," slash forward and ground-pound. Of course, everyone wants more measures of music, but if your game can't compete with four-on-the-floor then let's look at the funk. *ba-na-naa-nah* Fly By Knight gets an A for Aerial, Charming but Anchored.
"Fly By Knight" is a student project from the DigiPen Institute of Technology, and this year DigiPen deciced to teach the students badly, as a joke. In fact, they taught the students that it's okay to release 2D retro pixelcrap on Steam despite the fact that 3D accelerators became mainstream in the 1990's, with cards like the Voodoo3 and ATI Rage... and even mobile phones can do 3D graphics nowadays. Imagine how hard it must have been for the teachers to go out and tell the students that the pinnacle of gaming is 2D pixelcrap, and they'll fail the course if they don't dump pixelcrap on Steam. What do you do in the game? This is just a garbage, unimaginative 2D "platformer" style game... one of literally thousands infesting Steam, but of even more limited scope because it's just a student project. These educational institutions need to reconsider whether dumping every bit of homework on Steam is a good idea... sure, maybe it makes the students feel a bit better about themselves, but it's getting to the point that it's polluting Steam. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off. I feel bad for the students... if they ever show this to a prospective employer they'll be laughed out the door.

Simple game, easy to learn and well done for an indie game.
