Battle of Nantwich 1644 section is impossible to win for the Royalist, therefore cannot complete the other seven battles. This has been noted in previous comments and i myself have contacted Steam and Hunted cow with no engagement or fixes. very disappointed in lack of customer care
Great strategy game for its price. I
The 'Nantwich' battle is impossible for the Royalists to win - the Parliamentarian cavalry can always relieve the Nantwich garrison in a couple of moves, and there is nothing that the Royalists can do to stop this, they are too far away. So it is a frustrating and pointless scenario - and stops you progressing to the other battles. Another quibble is that, whenever one side meets their victory conditions, the fame stops immediately (which is fair enough) - but you are booted out of the screen and have no chance to review the position and work out what you did right or wrong.
An enjoyable, if "lite", wargame with plenty of scenarios to chose from. But it's a pity that it's necessary to win each battle before being able to move onto the next one.
Miniatures without the Testor's...fun, fun, fun...
Excellent gateway drug to traditional wargames. Nicely detailed sprites. Decent variety of scenario types.
Simple, but an intriguing take on a little examined, but critical period of English history.
This is the only game I could find based on the English Civil War although it only covers 1642-1645. Decent game play, though it has limited (if any) replay value. There is a tutorial (Parliamentarians/Roundheads only) and 4 campaigns (excluding the tutorial there are 28 total playable scenarios which are playable by both sides). However these campaigns are simply series of scenarios and your play in the previous scenario has no impact on the next one. In 5 hours of play I'm about a third of the way through completing everything though. In summation, decent game even though it feels a bit railroaded and there's not much content.
As an amateur historian with a more than passing interest in the period and subject matter I find this a challenging and fun game.
The game is entertaining enough, though I wouldn't say especially detailed, though it's good to see some of the lessor known 'battles' (I'm not sure some of them really rise to that tile) being available to play. The 'campaign' element doesn't really follow through, it just means that year's campaign and there are some oddities, in that I managed to kill Charles I (and Prince Rupert) and Edgehill which one would have thought would mean battle over for the Royalists, but they kept fighting, yet when Cromwell was KIA at Marston Moor it was game over for the Parliamentarians. The AI is pretty poor and it will quite happily throw troops across a bridge or ford into an enfiladed position and even in 'Hard' mode victory is not that much of a challenge - though I do recommend not attaching your generals to units as it is too easy to lose track of them, which was why Oliver was a 200 at my first attempt at Marston Moor. I paid £7.19 for the game, worth £5 in my book.
