I am not a big MMO fan, they usually require a huge time sink, and are incredibly hard to understand properly, usually because of years and years of updates, changes, and reworks, plus just general lack of information for certain things. All of these are true for FFXIV, yet that has not stopped me from enjoying the game. There's isn't a whole lot of build crafting besides picking whatever has the highest number, each class has its own unique style and feel to it even if they fall under the same general catergory, and each mechanic in the game is fairly indepth and interacts with each pretty well. The best example I can give is the crafting classes. Carpenter, by itself, is a craft class that makes wooden lumber and goods, like tools or gear. However, it does need components that it alone cannot make, like metal components, which require either a Blacksmith or Armorer to craft first, but how do you get the metal or the wood to craft? You can either buy it from NPC's, like the tradecraft suppliers, but that costs gil, and if you don't want to spend the money, you can gather it yourself, using a specialized class for gathering the items you need, Botanist for wood and organic material, and Miner for gems and metal. This creates a very well grounded loop, and while I enjoy it (sometimes, the higher level crafts get pretty annoying), it does have its draw backs. For every crafting job, you are restricted to that crafting job. Let's say you are a Carpenter, and need one metal ingot to complete a craft. You can't just make the ingot as a carpenter, so you need to swap your class, which on controller, involves closing all the menus you had open, opening another menu, and then swapping your class there. Regardless, the game is overall very fun, and even more so if you can get a few friends on or make them in-game, as the community is very welcoming (if rather degenerated from my experiences).
