Square Enix is confused about who this game is for, and so am I. Is it for kids with the cartoonish characters, silly unrealistic dialogue, and story? Or is it for adults with the occasional adult themes, frequent cursing, grittier vibe, and callbacks to FF7 OG? On that note, is this game for fans of the original, evidenced by all its callbacks and references with insufficient context and explanation for someone unfamiliar, or is it for newcomers to the franchise through its significantly revamped plot? I'm constantly confused while playing this game, thinking "who exactly is this for?" I struggle to think that it's for gamers looking for a good new video game, because it fails in that regard. Rebirth and Remake both share excellent presentation--the environments, towns, set pieces, music, cinematography, and VFX are often stunning. But this is not a fun video game. 90%+ of the oversaturated side content is tedious fluff. Every chapter is stuffed with mini-games that are boring and/or frustrating. The pacing is all over the place. The game frequently slows you down with long drawn out cutscenes and literal forced slow-walking through every area. And the combat is often a slog with bullet sponge enemies and sometimes crazy unfair mechanics. I'm thankful I turned the game on Easy mode about 1/3 of the way through. The performance in some areas is atrocious. The story is convoluted as hell with plot developments, character actions, and motivations that make no sense. The constant cartoony unrealistic dialogue is grating. But I'll think to myself "it's ok, it's probably meant to be a children's game," until the next moment when the women of the group are kidnapped by bandits hinting potential s*x trafficking if we don't do as they say. I don't know man, it's flashy and sometimes hits the comedic moments, but it feels like this was made by people reaching for anything they thought was a "cool" idea without any consideration of if it's "fun," or even at least a sensible enjoyable story. I don't recommend this trilogy to people who haven't played the original FF7, and I struggle to recommend it to people that have.
Nice ubislop copy and awful porting
I stopped, as you might guess from the hours in the game, playing this very near the end. The cumulative weight of the numerous minor annoyances (tedious mini-games, uncooperative camera that sets you up to face tank hits, etc.) just became too much and I was no longer having fun with the game. Certainly not enough to care about finishing it.
I just don't know what they were thinking... making Rebirth so vastly different from Remake... FF7 is a SINGLE game you needed to commit to a format. I didn't like remake and the changes they made in Rebirth just made things more infuriating. Story: S+++++ but it's just a pretty faithful retelling of the original Graphics: S+ Combat: D Gameplay overall: D Minigames: mostly fun but way to many are interjected into progress it aint for everyone and they force it Chocobo handling: atrocious (open world, not during the racing segments that was fine) Another reviewer mentioned with how often you change party members and adjust materia there should be a better system. Why is there no "Unequip all materia all characters" button, Why cant I set profiles for each champion to equip certain gear/materia, how is it in 202x we are still using simple barely filterable lists for all this stuff you have. I am a diehard FF7 fan, I will buy the last one when its on sale of course because they definitely have not earned a full price admission with these first 2 games.
Cringe Fantasy - Minigame Edition
Ohje. Also warum einbauen? ⚡
100% padding. This entire game is a few pointless minigames and a couple of super tiny "open world" maps. I spent about 7 hours running around the second city trying to figure out which of the 200 identical characters you need to talk to before playing a rhythm game to finally leave. I found 4 out of 10 before deciding i'd rather be playing something fun and quitting. It's interesting to see the FF7 characters rendered in modern graphics, but the nostalgia runs out fast.

after 40+ hours in -Needing third party fixes for UW -Controller Input bugs that require 3rd party mods to correct -The Enemy scaling slog -and numerous other issues This game stopped being worth my time and energy. It's sad, i really wanted to complete this game, but artificial progression slow down meaningless zonal stuff, and never feeling strong in the game just ruined it for me. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS GAME
I was really excited for this game after playing remake + intermission (still have to play crisis core) and to be blunt, it's been a while since I've been this disappointed. Remake had such a winning formula with its courage to stray from the original story as a remake, deep characterizations, awesome environments and doing justice to the character designs. Even the sidequests felt good, fleshing out the world and getting more in touch with the setting and the people in it. Alas, this isn't a review of Remake, this is about Rebirth. To start off, it's extremely poorly optimized and keeps freezing even in pre-rendered cutscenes. My specs are admittedly not top of the line but good enough to run most contemporary games without issue, except this one. The story so far is good, obviously; it is FF7 after all but it keeps being interrupted by some of the most infuriating mandatory minigames I've ever had to deal with. A minigame here or there would not warrant a complaint from me but they are constant and they are often evidently unfinished and not well thought-through. A lot of the controls are really clunky and they don't really add anything other than padded playtime. When I initiate a main story quest, I foolishly expect to progress the story, have interesting character moments, see what happens next, but instead the tension and momentum keeps being broken up by these minigames. The world is an open world and it feels like it is such for the sake of being one, not because they had a cool concept for it. There's a ton of chores that repeat and repeat and repeat and as if that wasn't grindy enough, they also keep getting interrupted by chadley, who not once has said something that actually added anything so far. I liked chadley in remake, but rebirth is making me despise his presence. Every time I finish one of the knockoff ubisoft open world chores (even ubisoft makes them more intresting), chadley facetimes me to let me know something to the effect of "wow, you did that" and it is infuriating. But wait, there's more! Navigating the world is also quite awkward, where you can either deal with clunky context buttons on foot or bump into every pebble with your chocobo, and every time you bump into something, you get a fun animation in which your chocobo bounces back and shakes it off, which was cute at first but after the 50th time, it just eats up time when I'm just trying to get to the next place. You can also go faster on your chocobo but when you do, there's almost no steering, so you just bump into even more and it doesn't speed you up at all in the end. The side quests are also a big disappointment. As I mentioned above, in Remake, they were fleshing out the world and the people in it and now...it's mainly a collection of mid at best minigames and every now and then, you get a cute line from one of your party members because for some reason every side quest is now tied to a party member who gains affection when you finish it. Why is the affection system here? Beats me. It just makes side quests feel more hollow and less like helping people because it feels good to do and more to impress one of your friends as if it was a dating sim of sorts. All in all, they should've left the game in the oven for another year or two, optimize it, flesh out the world, rethink side systems, ask whether all these minigames and interruptions are really necessary and what the players would enjoy. All the prolonged animations, mini-cutscenes in the middle of chores, side quests feeling like chores are things that just make me feel like this game does not respect my time and that's really disappointing after how genuinely great the first game of the remake trilogy was. I hope they rein it in and get their stuff together for the third game at least because it truly is a tragedy to see this much potential and a winning concept to just go to waste for reasons I could not hope to understand.
