This is my first ever fallout game, which my friend who is a long time series fan prompted me to buy when it was on sale for $1. I felt like this game earned my dollar within the first 5 minutes of gameplay while I ignored the mission prompts and wandered around goodsprings. By the time I was halfway though, I would have paid full steam price for it comfortably. By the endgame of my first run, I'd realized I would've paid modern game prices for this thing. But I didn't. I paid a single dollar. Thank you random flash sales!
Something about the way this game handles, the depth of consequence for player choice, and the balance between serious and silly has given me brainworms. And I've just played the base game so far- I literally got the prompt to review this while logging on to buy the DLCs. Its also highly moddable, which is always a plus for me personally. I like that you get to do pretty much anything, and theres impactful consequence for those actions, generally. It also runs on my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ laptop that crashes if I move it wrong. The character controls amazing, the weapons are mostly intuitive and feel fun to use, and every win feels earned without being too brutal unless you try and fight something that's clearly endgame too soon. Line delivery is pretty solid too, The character customization leaves a lot to be desired (aside from the different apparel items! There's a lot!) but considering I play most of the game in first person I really don't care all that much.
It's got its issues, the lakelurk cave crashes my game 7/10 times for one, but the bug situation has been doccumented to death. The only thing that I would ask to improve on this game is if it had a bit more in-depth base building because I love that ♥♥♥♥, but that's a me thing, and I don't think the game is lacking for not having something that specific. This game is genuinely so good that I get nauseous thinking about the fact it was made in 18 months because I start imagining a world where they had 3 or more years instead. The fact that characters were cut not for time but because they physically couldn't fit on the disc for physical release makes me insane.
