Abstract
Retro horizontal space shooter. It seems that all the necessary elements are in place. Works fine on Ubuntu 16.04. Notebook with Intel® HD Graphics 4400 is enough.
GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 16.04. Recommended, but with caution. First the positive: -Pixel art and music are good, controls well and the briefings between each missions are all done nicely. -You don't take damage from hitting the ground which is great. -The game has an upgrade system too which to me are always a huge plus in shmups. -Enemy placement is mostly pretty good too. Now the bad: -A couple stages are designed to force you to use a certain weapon/ability in order to complete a bonus side-mission, but you don't know it until you're already in the level. So a lot of times I'd go into a level, realize what I have equipped won't work to fulfill the side missions requirements, pause exit back to the command center and reequip. What's worse, if you spent earned crystals on something else but a powered up flamethrower is what you really need, you're screwed (because you can't revisit previously completed stages to earn more crystals). And if you complete the level without doing the bonus mission there's no way to go back to the level unless you a) complete the game and it loops back to the beginning and progress through each level, or b) overwrite your saved game and start a new one (there's only one save slot). -Next is the upgrade system. You earn crystals in stages to purchase/upgrade weapons, but if you die during the stage you lose everything. You could be 99% through the level and get killed on your last life and it's back to the beginning of the level, or the command room. -The size of your ship is kinda big for the playing field as well as your hitbox. -Some of your weapons have a cool down which even if fully upgraded it doesn't shorten the cool down timer at all. -The game is very challenging, even on normal. Normal feels like what hard should be. -Enemy bullets all need to be the same shape and color to make it easier to tell. Some of the background graphics have ships flying around which is nice, but it's also hard to tell they're actually in the background. -After you complete the game you do get to loop back to stage 1 with all your upgrades, but you can't tackle a harder difficulty this way. You'd have to erase your save game and start fresh again. I know I've mentioned a lot of bad things here but overall I did enjoy the game though, once I figured out how everything works, but on the other hand it may put off a lot of people from playing or finishing it. At the very least if they lowered the difficulty some and make the ship and/or hitbox smaller it would be more enjoyable.
Exile squadron is a simple classic left-to-right shooter. You instantly feel nostalgia once you get past the main menu. I urge the developer to remove it because once you get into the command center it's great. The theme and story are my favorite part of the game. The layout and pixel art remind me of games past. Story screens between missions build the theme even more. I see the developer's dedication to crafting the story and I love it. Exile Squadron is difficult and I've died a few times. Although mostly from dumb mistakes like running into objects I shouldn't have. A confusing but cool mechanic is ship attachments. They allow your ship to shoot in a different direction. I'm confused because I haven't figured out how I'm opening the boxes. Shooting them a little is what I've tried so far. Anyway, your ship has three weapon slots. It has a primary weapon, secondary weapon, and an addon. You use crystals to upgrade them. Finding crystals is easy since they're plentiful throughout missions. The weapons are straightforward but you might need a specific one attached for a side objective. My biggest issue is the background. It's hard to tell what I'm going to crash in to. Ships flying across are distracting along with tiny bullets that seem like they're going to hit you. I'm frustrated but it doesn't ruin the game. I don't know why developers insist on making it so difficult for new players. Overall, the game is fun but it's not breaking new ground. Simple left-to-right space shooter with a stronger story. Be aware there are only six missions and after that, you'll have to play through again on a higher difficulty.
This game brings me back to the arcade games I've played in the late '80s. Exile Squadron can be quite challenging, but since you don't have to use quarters to replay the game (like in the arcade cabinets of old), you can try to overcome this challenge as many times as you want. And when you finally beat the level you were struggling with for some time, that feeling is fantastic. I'm only at the third mission, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Can recommend it to anyone who wants to play a good retro shmup.
Absolutely LOVE this game!!! I haven't had any super long gaming sessions in a very long time! Exile Squadron had me hooked instantly, and I played it for hours and hours!!! I couldn't be more happy with this game!!!
Decent shmup made by mostly one guy. The game isn't very long (6 stages), but having only 3 lives means that you have to redo them a few times if you are not careful. Didn't have any problems distinguishing what's happening on screen, so all deaths were fair. You get all the equipment from the start and then you can upgrade the ones you use with the currency earned from winning the missions. Didn't encountered any bugs or crashes.
ENG: I bought it with low expectations and it exceeded them by far. It's a pretty solid Shoot 'Em Up, with a good amount of weapons, upgrades and missions. While the retro graphics may not be very appealing, you can tell that there was a lot of love in its creation.
First impressions - An underrated indie gem ---------------------------------------------- Solid writing. The writing is the point. Short and pregnant. There are no grammar or spelling errors that throw you off. Sure, that’s not a main aspect for this kind of game, but it helps with the immersion. Controls Per statement of the developer the game orients itself on classics and is therefore keyboard or controller only. That might be off-putting for some, prefering mouse controls. But the controls are tight. You have full customization abilities. You have your four flight directions and three keys for primary attack, secondary attack, special. The manoeuvring becomes intuitive in an instant. Graphics The animations and style are on point too. I have been getting C-64 X-Out vibes. Which is my personal number one side scrolling shooter. Gameplay You’ve got upgrade and customization options for your ship. And you also have a weapon testing option, before going in the next level. After a short intro, giving you a sense where and when the story takes place, you are presented with the command centre. It perfectly sets the mood and pinpoints the style of the game. From here you are able to upgrade your ship, test weapons, look up the database, bring up the leaderboards, change options and start the campaign. Overall impressions Exile Squadron is a solid and stable game, brought to life as a labour of love by a One-Person-Studio. It does not play like a retro game, you get an honest classic vibe. With the choice from three difficulties it is also not as deadly punishing as some titles of yore. I’m thinking of Tiger Mission, I loved that game, but hell, I wasn’t able to beat it for the life of me. Additional thoughts on difficulty. I've completed the campaign on normal and had some I pull the disk out of the floppy drive and throw it against the wall moments. But, a bit like in the olden times, when you've taken a break and go at it refreshed, you'll be able to adapt your load out and overcome. I'm a little afraid to start the campaign on hard. Chances are, your reflexes aren't as rusty as mine and you won't be as afraid as I am. 8) I’d say you can get a good impression in under two hours. So if you have eyed the game before, give it a try and see if it is up your alley and refund if it ain’t.
