Just a buggy and repetitive mess.
Evil west is a very solid game brought down by a few issues which most boil down to *sigh* "modern game issues." To get the bad out of the way. First off, as an Unreal Engine game, it's got some serious performance issues on PC, which, oddly enough, I didn't encounter on the Steam Deck. The frame drops and pop in were pretty nasty on PC; nothing that I'd consider game breaking, but certainly annoying. The modern game issues include: characters who never stop talking - every action is met with a stupid phrase from the lead, Marvel-esque writing - everyone just quips all the time and is super irreverent, egregious signposting - it's a completely linear game, but everything you interact with glows from a mile away which kills the fun of finding secrets, and some characters that don't make sense in the setting - though that part is at least part of the story. These issues prevent the game from greatness. Other than that, I love the story, and some of the character writing is really good. The sound track and overall audio are top-tier, the combat is fun as hell, the art and graphics are excellent, and so on. I think the best thing about the game is spectacular level design (which is why the sign posting is annoying). You're never lost or confused, the puzzles are a bit simple but fun, and the pacing is perfect. They could have easily made the game an exhausting onslaught of enemy hordes, but they tastefully chose to let the levels breathe, allowing the player to explore and find stuff in between big fights. It's really the pacing that made the game for me, honestly. Overall a super solid game that I highly recommend.
The co opmode is very fun. also hilarious because its just two of the same character and one dissapears in the cutscenes. absoloutly hilarious with a friend.
The atmosphere of this game is exactly what I expected and it doesn't try to be hyper-realistic either. It was a great beat'em up with your electrical fist and has great weapons to take down monsters. The story is nothing amazing and is good enough for the game. Sometimes I feel there were holes in the story or not enough given, but to be frank, I just wanted to kill monsters, power up, and stop the monsters from taking over. Majority of game mechanics worked fine. There are a few mishaps of getting backed into a corner and cant roll out away from the monsters (Use the shotgun) and it would activate some controls I was not pressing (especially referring to the electric ground pound when trying to crash towards a villain to stun with the electricity). A fine game to enjoy and relax with.
Evil West is the sole example of what most studios do when they run out of ideas. In the beginning the game was a fun experience, nice combat system, towards the end it was just the idea "lets throw all of the bosses into one arena", let give the boss infinite Health and Aimbot in attacks that the player cannot dodge. I like playing games on harder difficulties, Evil West was the first one, which was more enjoyable on lesser Difficulties. In the Second to Last Boss fight I quit and Deleted the game, because the second half was not enjoyable at all.
Two things stand out most to me this game. 1. The story is captivating and makes you want to play more to find out what happens next 2. You feel like a bad ass killing machine as you progress, from the cinematic biss kills, to new abilities, and high octane action! The game can get a little repetitive as most hack and slash style games do but the constant new weapons and abilities tend to counteract that boredom. 8/10 good time killing vampires, blasting with a shotgun l, electricity, or a none stop punching
