"Espresso Economics" is a big failure of a game and we must of course as always ask why... and the answer is because they're trying to make a tycoon game educational. And as happens so often with "educational" products, this is not making economics education better, it's just making gaming worse. The idea with this game is that you play a little 2.5D/iso coffee shop platespinner game that makes mobile apps like Cook Serve Delicious! look like AAA franchises, and you do this by respecting Adam Smith's invisible hand model of classical economic theory... no post-Keynsian/neoclassical synthesis stuff here. If this was even vaguely realistic you'd go out of business because a huge chain with an inferior product would open right next to you and clobber you with economy of scale, and also your workers would seize the means of production. Unfortunately after all that, people will buy something just because it's white (this is why Apple is still in business). No real consideration seems to have been made for what gamers want out of games with this product, though... poor visuals, worse gameplay, and really sloppy overall presentation. This could have been a browser app. This has some really mediocre looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
This game has got a lot of potenial, but has some major flaws Economy in this game is kinda lobotomised ( and i can say this even after not playing this game for a full hour) I know that supply and demand is one of a ( or even the most ) most important law in econ, but i think the introduction of price elasticity would make this game much more immersive bc u can simply put maximum price and your revenue is still at a good level. Also the glitches - on a second day i think - i had to buy 1000 pounds of coffee even when my demand for it was only 25, which kinda messed up my game. A lot of potenial - a lot to work on also
