I have a very short-attention span, yet I try to be open-minded. And so, I hesistantly decided to try this as my first 4X game. I played it for hours straight without even realising. That's a HUGE sign of how good this is. The UI, UX, sound design, visuals and art direction are all REALLY well done and it felt surprisingly easy to navigate despite being a very complex game by nature. The five factions (soon to be six) are so disparate it feels like playing five distinct games which is sooo imperative for replayability and that's awesome. I've only explored the tip of the iceberg and it's already showing incredible potential. Devs are extremely passionate considering the way they have been handling community feedback and the superb quality of its early access state. Heard EL1 was a classic so it's great to see they're pushing themselves further with this. Eagerly waiting for 1.0!
Game looks amazingly good and pretty, but I don't know what the ♥♥♥♥ I'm doing. Doesn't feel like I'm making any interesting choices. And while the plot is interesting for each civilization the writing just feels like walls of text without flavour.
I really love Endless Legend, Dungeon of the Endless, and Endless Space 2. I generally liked Humankind, but Endless Legend 2 – as it currently stands – looks like a step in the wrong direction. It falls short of the first game in design (EL2's graphics are better though), atmosphere, gameplay, and even, damn it, music. The map and the game itself are visually very poor compared to the first game. I understand why this was done. Together with the Tidefall system, it's a kind of equalizer for capital starting positions, but I can't say it makes the game more interesting. Endless Legend 1 had enormous visual variety in terms of biomes and anomalies. The anomalies themselves truly looked, well, anomalous – something interesting and unusual. Each anomaly had a gorgeous 2D artwork showing it in all its glory. In EL2, anomalies might just be hippos in a puddle or some bugs on branches, and there are no 2D artworks at all :\ Heroes, buildings, events, quests – all of that has also lost the luxurious visuals of the first game and now, at best, features character figures standing against a blank background, chatting with each other. Honestly, the decision to turn quests from descriptive stories into dialogues is highly questionable. Personification isn't needed in this type of game – it feels more like a strange attempt at a visual novel. The UI – it's just bad. Especially the city interface. Why they decided to split everything you can build into a bunch of tabs is a mystery. It's not convenient; you simply forget about those tabs. It's also annoying to constantly jump to the population screen to reassign citizens every turn. Technology – there's too little of it (especially compared to ES2), it's slow and expensive, and it offers little of interest. The only positive thing so far is the combat system, which has a clearer order system compared to the first game – but it was already implemented in Humankind, and there it wasn't burdened with "active abilities" that are honestly not very powerful, not very interesting, work on a "once per battle" basis, and are placed in a non-prominent part of the UI – you constantly forget about them. I don't understand why they're trying to turn a 4X game into some weird homage to Heroes of Might and Magic, with too much focus on hero skill progression, forced relationships between heroes, and their personal "estate" that somehow ties the hero to a region. Unit progression with upgrades into new branches (again, like in Heroes) plays outright poorly. If your empire doesn't produce a ton of science and you can't unlock new branches quickly, your units hit a progression ceiling – and even if you fight successfully with them, they gain nothing from it. They don't become stronger with combat experience as they used to – they just stagnate. Because of that, you have to simply build MORE units and overwhelm with numbers, which means clicking through 15–20 units just to end your turn. The Doomwraith system is frankly strange and annoying. You go to attack your neighbor – meanwhile a black-and-gold ball arrives and starts farting on your capital, lowering all parameters. You have to deal with them instead, and they're no pushover, especially in the early stages. And they keep pouring out of rifts – you, the player, want to close them, but the AI doesn't really bother. Music has always been a very strong part of the Endless series, but here it's frankly poor, boring, and far from as unique and distinctive as in all previous games. I admit this might change by release, but right now, during gameplay, the soundtrack quickly becomes tiresome. The game currently has very few interesting decisions and is very sick in terms of UI. It's outright bad. That's not even mentioning early access bugs. For instance, some of my units stopped responding to commands and just stood there – which is absolutely not okay in this type of game. I'd like to give a neutral review, but since there isn't one, I'm leaning towards negative. Better go play Endless Legend or Endless Space 2 (if only they'd fix desync in those). EL2 right now is a very raw, very undercooked, and very frustrating experience. Buy it only if you want to support the developers – they do know how to make games (excluding Endless Dungeon – let's pretend it doesn't exist) – and there's a chance EL2 will become great. But the problem is that it's just a chance.
The game is far from being polished. As a Necrophages-main from EL1, I am completely disappointed with the way it has been implemented in EL2. Awful balance. Need to remove reinforcement limit in a future patch to make the current implementation do anything worthwhile. If you play a solo game against AI, the necrophage AI will always be the first to die, within the first 60 turns. That's how bad the necrophages are. Also I tested several hero abilities during my time playing the game and there are a couple that do NOT work at all. So putting skill points into those abilities is a complete waste. If you are thinking of picking up this game, WAIT till it comes out of early access. Maybe in a year from now it will be polished.
Endless Legends excels at vibes. But the longer you play the messier it gets -- the whole empire sprawling with very little meaning or challenge. The game lacks a kind of simple elegant challenge. It's evocative but not very substantive on the game mechanics. Definitely an improvement over the 1st one. Some interesting mechanics. But unless the developer considers how to sharpen the game it becomes a headache, rather than an enjoyable replayable challenge (for example, a good Civ game).
I think the developers are going in the right direction. I really love the ambience of the game, this includes some of the incredible sound tracks. The only thing (for me) holding it back right now is the balancing. Aspects is horrible to play against, I feel the White Truce mechanic is just way too overpowered vs. agressive factions. I was literally waiting with my armies on their borders for the Truce to end, only to be forced into it again a turn after declaring war. For a peace forcing faction their armies also seem to scale very well in comparison to some others. The minor faction powers also need to be a bit more balanced I think. I remember one of my first games the enemy AI had 80% crit rate on all their units because a lot of those minor faction villages were close to their home. Also I'm not sure about the victory paths, but they feel unbalanced/unfinished so I ignore them for now. I still really do enjoy this game. And believe it will be very nice once finished.
Not sure the EA end date is quite right - "Leaving Early Access: 17 Sep, 2026" it says.... that's like 3 weeks from now and I gotta say, unless they suddenly add a whole heap more to this it seems just... lacking. What is here is beautiful, no doubt - music, art, world and lore etc. are all fantastic. But it just .... doesn't really feel like a full game. It feels small even on a "Huge" world (I've restarted dozens of times and normally the AI is about 2-3 sectors away which feels like right next door. On a small map I could understand this but on Huge - that's not huge at all. I expect Huge to be, you know, big). I think because of this - the difference in types of land don't really feel much either as it's like, sector by sector rather than like a whole group of them. It doesn't really feel like a 'zone' or 'area' so much as just a random sector - not really in keeping with equators or such. I like the hero customisation with items - but the skills seem rather limited. It was the same in ES2 so I get it, it's part of the Endless style.... but still, if something is good you want more. It doesn't really feel like progress. Each faction has about 5 units.... you can get more from 'minor races' but still - bit limited. Didn't like the fact that a custom race wouldn't let me gain achievements either. I've been playing AoW4 on PS5 and honestly, I hate to compare this to that - but I wish I'd just bought AoW4 or Planetfall on Steam instead - I'll come back to this in a year or so and hope that they've expanded it considerably like they did with the other games - but so far, when you look at the other games of this type out there, honestly you're better off getting TW:Empire, or AoW4 or Planetfall, or just.... a bigger, fuller, wider scoped game. I will come back and change my review if and when I have cause to. And who knows, maybe they are holding a shed load of content back for when that "Leaving Early Access: 17 Sep, 2026" date comes around. I hope so, because I spent so long re-starting in an effort to get a "huge" Map that I went past the refund stage. At the moment, this feels like Hard Work to enjoy and that's not really what I'm about at my age - I want something that I can load up and feel like "Whoa ok, this is Fun AF" - I got that from Menace, I got that from Quasimorph, Spellforce 3, Breachway..... didn't get it here. So I can't really say I'd recommend it - not in this state.
The most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TBS I have ever played. I know it's been a trend for a few games now in the endless series where good AI design is too expensive and complicated and is instead replaced with bonuses the player doesn't have. But they have relied upon that crutch to an extreme degree here. Do you enjoy being gaslit about how much the AI cheats? Do you enjoy an "exploration" game where the AI ignores expansion cost and spams out cities/outpost like crazy? Do you enjoy rapidly changing world events that, even on the slowest settings, still progress so quickly only the AI can take advantage of them? Do you enjoy chasing single units that are faster than your own which can, in a single turn, create a burrow their armies can teleport between? Do you enjoy having White people and males erased from your IP entirely? If so, then this clearly untested pile of ♥♥♥♥ is perfect for you! I wish I could refund.
