♥♥♥♥ THIS GAME. COMBAT IS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ RETARDED
No. Demo was great so made an impulse buy, big regret. Game has been out for half a year with very little improvement and plays more or less the same as the demo. The ages with the monsoons are really cool, everything else feels pretty bland. Custom factions are so insulting. Endless Legends 1 was great and had so much variability to the factions you could create. Now making a custom faction forces you to give up the factions empire quest but allows you to add like 5 starting gold. This game feels heartless, directionless, and pointless.
There were some rough early access growing pains in there, like a city construction UI that was pretty much completely backwards, but after the July update it's basically a working version of Endless Legend with some changes to the core mechanics, albeit still a little threadbare until we get the pass on minor factions and the last basic major faction. Headline feature of course is the world being gradually revealed by the oceans dropping at a few points during the game so that there's always territory to claim and fight over, and that doesn't completely kill the oceans anymore so the feel is pretty good. If you liked Endless Legend this is basically more of that.
EL2 fully fills the roll of being the modern fantasy 4X/Civ game many people desire. Factions are very well and uniquely designed, Tech and Minor factions nicely adapted from EL1 and - dare I say it - the UI and Sound designs are surprisingly gorgeous compared to other current games in the genre. The lowering water is a perfect gameplay mechanic to grant new land periodically and have an expanding map. It is a great spin on the climatic cycle of EL1 combined with the modern Civ-idea of expanding the map. The Devs have been very responsive and constantly active to patch and improve the game. If you like fantasy and Civilization you will enjoy this game.
I tried to like this I really did, but bounced off it hard. None of the factions interest me, and I found the gameplay boring. I've been gaming for 40+ years, love turn-based and grand strategy games, but this one never clicked. The gameplay, the narrative, it all feels a bit forced. Not natural or intuitive. Just left me feeling frustrated mostly.
needs more time 8/10
Great game with a lot of potential. I look forward to see how it shapes up in the coming year
I avoided Early Access for this title, waiting until it was fully baked. I'm really glad I did, because this game is something really special. It took me several hours to really get a feel for it, and to discover the deep interacting models that make this game run. In the same way that Endless Legend 1 and Endless Space set up so many new themes that seem ubiquitous now (city districts, heroes, varied citizens) EL2 feels like it's setting up the next decade of 4X advances. While I am upset that there are no Horatio in the race selection, their spirit lives on in the minor races becoming protectorates.
