Ender Lilies is a nice metroidvania that takes place in a desolated kingdom. You control young Lily, but a unique twist is that she doesn’t attack directly. Instead, you gain and equip various spirits with different attack types that attack for her. In practice, it’s like she’s the one attacking, but it’s a nice concept because it gives a lot of versatility depending on which spirits you have equipped. They map to 3 buttons, with a quick swap, for a total of 6 spirits you can have equipped at a time. Defeating bosses, besides giving you a main spirit, unlocks a new traversal ability, so they are unlocked regularly. Besides being needed to access new areas, there are a lot of items that can’t be collected the first time, so you’ll have to return later with the correct abilities, which is standard for the genre. The mini-map is basic, since it only displays the basic shape of rooms, but it shows every connection to other rooms. Also, when everything has been collected inside a room, it changes color. It’s very satisfying seeing that color increase as you complete the rooms, although some collectibles are tricky to figure out. The bosses are decent, and with so many spirit combos, they’re enjoyable to replay. After finishing the game, boss rush is also unlocked, alongside modifiers and New Game Plus. The game looks great, despite the grimmer setting. The music is also pretty solid, especially the early tracks. The story is just alright, though. Overall, combat and movement are fluid and responsive. Overall, it’s a solid metroidvania that I can recommend on sale.
8.5/10 Gameplay: 9/10 Bosses: 8.5/10 Music: 9/10 Story: 8/10 Exploration/secrets: 8/10 Art/Design: 7.5/10 Really good game. The only reasons this isn't higher than 8.5 are that i didn't completely vibe with the art style as I prefer more of 2D metroidvanias, and the story was pretty hard to grasp. That aside, the movement and the combat felt really great, and I loved how defeating a miniboss always gave you a new attack type and defeating a main boss have you an ability, this made every boss encounter feel very impactful and rewarding to get through. Regarding the bosses themselves, I really didn't like how the final boss is just a punching bag with add spawns(his attacks are really easy to dodge and deal less damage than the adds attacks somehow), which essentially makes the final boss a dps check - you either can kill the spawns fast enough or you get overwhelmed. The second to last boss also didn't feel great with some ridiculous damage numbers, which made in the one-shot range after any attack you miss even with damage reducing charms. Apart from those 2, the other bosses felt good to fantastic, especially the lance boss and the wall jump boss(yes, i don't remember their names), which felt a lot like a duel which i really liked. The exploration felt pretty good, with a lot of branching paths, and as I learnt after finishing the game I beat quite a few bosses "out of the order"(e.g. my second boss was the witch, and i went to the first ending right after finishing catacombs at only around 6 hours of playtime), there were also a lot of secrets and I liked how the map showed you which rooms where completely, though my one slight issue with the map is that it doesn't show your position inside a room which felt a bit confusing at times. And lastly, I have to separately commend the music in this game. The ambient music in the areas is decent, but what really shines in this game are the boss tracks, which almost unanimously absolutely slap.
Проходила игру второй раз уже на своём аккаунте и могу сказать, что это того стоило. Приятный геймплей, атмосфера, сюжет, разнообразный дизайн и реализация осквернённых. Не могу сказать ничего плохого об игре, мне всё очень нравится
A masterpiece. That's said enough. The game creator really wanted you to figure out the story on your own from reading the item and text through the game. The art was made by Miv4t(department of history) My suggestion going in to this game is expecting the game to be slow, not all enemies are your enemy. You kill enemies so they can move on to the next life and liberate them from suffering.
Really like the music and how much the game doesn't hate me. I mean you don't lose anything upon death, you can bench warp without quitting to the menu, if you accedantly use heal with full health it doesnt waste your prayer charge, i love these additions. I also love that you can refight main bosses and rewatch cutscenes and how the story isn't some vague, encrypted lore you gotta watch ten lore videos to figure out.
btw, the music in the abyss? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ scared me the first time. Why does a song have gasps and other random noises in it. Don't get me wrong tho i liked that its actually unsettling
When done right, dark fantasies can be some of the most unique takes from a reader's perspective, offering a desolate view of pain and darkness, with a small amount of hope throughout. In Ender Lilies case, it gives the best of both worlds through it's setting, protagonist, and gameplay! Story wise, it does follow a lot of the same beats as most grimdark fairy tales, but thankfully it's all done nicely that's easy to follow even with all the lore. Lily's appearance greatly stands out brightly not just from a gameplay perspective, but from a story arc as well that does have proper reasoning outside of being a cute little girl. It's engaging enough to care about the fate of the land, especially for Lily and the "knights" at your command. On that note, the gameplay itself is very solid too as with any great metroidvania, giving you many options for combat and exploration. Each main boss and spirit you free gives you abilities to explore the world, and prepare for the enemies ahead of you. It's so unique to have those same souls help you towards your journey, and they all have their own strengths, even if some may outshine others. With relics and a special power meter, you have a large number of strategies to better suit whatever comes your way! There are a few critiques that were bothersome and may upset other players however, with a common one being the map. I don't mind it being just a square/rectangle per area, but there should've been proper pin markers to know exactly what to come back for; since like most metroidvanias, there will be doors and places you can't access just yet. The sound design is good but it lacks satisfying impact, and as a result, combat does feel a bit floaty but nothing too bad. There's also a massive difficulty spike in the later half of the game if your not prepared, as bosses, enemies, and later stages will wreck you if your playing too passively. While it may take a bit to truly open up and the issues might make the journey a little tedious, this is a fascinating metroidvania that does everything right in terms of gameplay, visuals, story, and challenge! With a unique take of having the spirits of those you defeated be your means of progression, battle, and purpose, I can definitely agree that it's one of the greater metroidvanias that's worth your time!
