Honestly I had a tough time writing a review for Elsewhere High Chapter 1. It's just painfully average. Unfortunately steam doesn't have neutral rating so I will give it a positive one BUT ONLY because its free, small in download size, and it works. From a technical perspective it's not good. The interface doesn't look good and it's missing some basic VN options (e.g. text speed), art style is also nothing special (It's passable). It does have sound affects/music's which are pretty good except you can't turn them off or lower them (there is literally no sound option !?!). Also steam overlay doesn't work. The story wise it's ok and personally I enjoyed it. Writing and pacing is better then your average steam visual novel and I haven't noticed any grammar mistakes. You do get a few choices through the story (two at the time) but the problem is choices are pretty much useless considering they don't affect the ending. Also if you want 100% achievement completion you'll have to buy chapter 2. Overall 5/10. You should give it a try but unfortunately don't expect too much. I do think that this developer can make a better VN in the future if they polish technical aspects of it and some other minor things.
The art was good, but the story started getting boring on the bus and it didn't get any better at the school, so... In all fairness, I've been in a reading slump for a minute, and I'm currently trying to claw my way out of it, so it's not completely the VNs fault. I do recommend giving it a shot, but only if you really like VNs or don't mind paying for the second chapter.
"Elsewhere High: Chapter 1 - A Visual Novel"
Saludos

I loved Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Interesting game, well-written, and well-developed but short - 2 hours for both episodes. It's a good price and I liked it - completely satisfied but I would have preferred a more expensive, complete game. I do think the two episodes are wonderful - I just would have preferred the whole story at a higher price. Either way, good job to the author - great writing and art just hurry up and finish the story please :-)
Background noise interrupted my train of thought and annoyed me more than helped me, there is no choice or way to suck me in be sides reading. I want more choice give me something a book cant do PLEASE! This was my first Visual Novel and kinda disappointed. Also No options to make it full screen or go back if you click to far and tired of clicking constantly. The story is decent and makes me think of purchasing more but just dont know if it was that good yet, 2.99 a chapter WTF! 0 Comments
Can't even play the game on my Macbook Pro because the game window is so large I can't read the text. Can't resize the window either. I'm willing to change my review if this is fixed.
From Horizon Studio comes Elsewhere High, a visual novel about a school for kids who were expelled from... everywhere else. You play as Derek, a boy expelled for writing horrible messages to another student, sent to Elsewhere High to become a better student. This is for all intent and purposes, a book. Your choices don't change the course of the story at all, it all still leads to the same place. The achievements are all really easy to get. The characters don't pull me in. The background noises are much more distracting than they help with the ambience. There's nothing about this that really pulled me into it and I was just playing to complete. And then the twist happened and my interest is definitely peeked. At first, I wasn't going to bother getting the second chapter, but after the twist, I definitely want to. I wouldn't really recommend this for anyone who doesn't enjoy sitting down and just reading a visual novel, especially because it doesn't have much to it. The story line as well, it's just not that gripping. However, the twist? It definitely makes chapter two worth looking at for me. Unfortunately, chapter one just went a little too long on for my own personal tastes. For what this is, a lot of filler could have been removed before it was released to the public. Not horrible, but it's not great either. This is one of those games I wish we had a sideways thumb for; because it did grip me and make me wanna buy the DLC, I'm going to mark it as a recommendation.
Eh...... I guess it's okay. It's very slow paced, and it definitely needs an option to advance the text speed. It needs an option menu, period. The art is mediocre. Needs some CGs. I don't like how you need the second chapter in order to get all the achievements. That's kinda lame. I'm neutral on this, but I wouldn't play it again, nor would I buy the second chapter.
