hate to say it.... it was laughably disappointing... after putting in over 70 hours there was not really anything going on, empty fields, grinding location instead of gear, basic upgrades and enemies that just spam the same AOE moves till you drop. it started strong but left us hanging after the death game intro, and very little backstory of characters when they join the "team". actions were just button mash, maps larger then needed to be, and the commentary my god how would you like your friend to keep telling you "hey there's a bird".... "look its a bird"..... " did i mention the bird i saw" I muted my game just to stop hearing useless comments. can't just go into the world like open world, you are stuck following the quest path and the ending made no sense, here's a powerful boss but no info your are just expected to fight and not ask questions... and for having PKers in the story of the anime but not once did we encounter one anywhere, we are given one cut scene with Foxglove and Stella but that is it. would rather replay the God Eater series since it is a game worth playing and incorporates your character into the story of the game compared to this.
While I don't tend to preorder games, this looked like the sao game I'd always hoped for, but as with most things it didn't match up to what they tried to offer. If you're going into this expecting it to be anything like the sao from the books, you will be disappointed like I was. This plays like a cheap reskin to make a standard boring grind look like a popular IP while not actually bothering to make it function like the IP. Having played tons of MMORPGs, I can say for certain that they managed to get all the negatives of an mmo without any of the upsides, you can spend hours running around mostly empty maps opening chests with actual trash in them while grinding the same five enemies. The 'open world' is a boldfaced lie as the game strictly railroads you along each quest, not allowing you to stray from it's preassigned area. The combat is fine, but it neither feels like the sao from the stories, nor does it have any real challenge even on the hardest settings. No matter what you're dealing with, a quick whirlwind will pretty much wipe everything on screen short of a boss in a few seconds, leaving you to keep spending hours walking around the admittedly lovely world. One of the main things I do like about this game is how it looks, which isn't to say everything is lore accurate, but it's close enough that taking screenshots at least makes it look like sao should. At any rate the game is clearly only going to be enjoyable to those who have a vested interest in sao already, I can't see this drawing anyone to the IP all things considered. At the same time if it weren't an sao game, it wouldn't get as many complaints from me, for being so unlike sao in all the ways that matter. The crafting for example is completely lore shattering, nothing about how this game plays seems to hold true to the mechanics on the world in the books. If this game were multiplayer or if it actually covered the entire story and not just two floors, it might be redeemable but as it stands I would only recommend buying this on discount if you enjoy grinding for hours for no reward.
Now Im not going to glaze this game, but i will say a lot of people are extremely critical of this game. This game is not perfect by any means, but the one thing i will give it for sure is that it is a stepping stone in the right direction. This is the TYPE of game we have been wanting for SAO but the game just needs more polish. If the creators are willing to listen to some of the things we are saying, this game can turn into an absolute goldmine for them and us. Now for my review: Pros: -The combat feels weighted for each style of weapon and makes you feel like you are doing damage. -The scenery is pretty and feels really good to look around and just see the world. -You can genuinely make your character overpowered but at the same time get humbled pretty quickly. -Character isnt the main character, more of a side buuuut you arent just a Kirito clone and that feels refreshing for an SAO game. -The armor customizing is pretty neat with different looks and color combos. -Ally AI is actually decent with fighting and can take care of themselves which is refreshing because you can mainly focus on just keeping yourself alive. -Permadeath mode is actually kinda hard and sticks to what it means for real lol Cons: -The enemy types are pretty repetitive -Not being able to switch gear in the world is a crime, especially since it shows Kirito doing it straight after the floor boss. -Map can be confusing to read with different elevations when you are trying to get the chests and pathways unlocked. -Ally AI talking is very repetitive to the point where sometimes you wish they would not talk at all. -Game exploration is quest based. The game should allow you a free roam type at some point. All in all i would recommend this game to anyone who genuinely loves SAO but i would definitely wait for a sale. 70$ price tag is kinda rough, but i do think the game is worth playing at least a bit. This game could be a great stepping stone for future SAO games that are coming out/DLC for this game adding floors and enemy types. overall 6.5-7/10
If you are diving into Echoes of Aincrad, manage your expectations: this is a linear JRPG framework, not an open-world sandbox. The game shines brightest in its combat, which delivers a heavy, rewarding Souls-like tension. Where it stumbles is the exploration and narrative presentation. The environmental design quickly loses its charm, as the caves and dungeons feel heavily cut and paste with repetitive layouts. Furthermore, the game relies on the classic silent protagonist trope, but the execution falls flat. Your character is entirely unexpressive; their reactions are limited to generic head nods and shakes that feel incredibly bland and devoid of emotion. It makes the story hard to invest in, even though the core combat loop is stellar. Overall, I recommend playing this game, but not at full price. Wait until it goes on sale.
The game is honestly pretty boring. It feels more like an Early Access title than a finished product. You can't customize your weapons, and the inventory serves almost no purpose other than looking pretty. Want to change your equipment? You have to go back to the inn. Want to allocate your stat points? You have to go back to the inn. Why do I have to hold the **V** key just to interact with a merchant when a single press would do the job? The finisher animations that suddenly change the camera angle are incredibly annoying. The skill keybindings are poorly designed as well—you can't remap a skill to a single key and are instead forced to use combinations like **Ctrl + another key**. Even now, I still don't understand why this game is priced the way it is. This is the worst game I've played in over 20 years of gaming. Now I understand why so many people send threatening emails to game publishers after playing a terrible game.
