As a fan of the anime I'm currently having a lot of fun with the game! I think a lot of people set their expectations too high and were disappointed because of it. I am pretty early into the game though so we will see if that changes. I think this game is a very good start for what most of us want from the SAO franchise and review bombing it is making a possible perfect SAO experience less likely to happen.
Performance issues and bad story I can deal with and ignore but the slowdown/camera pan on every single heavy attack kill makes combat just feel bad
A beautiful and faithful recreation of the anime so far. Fun gameplay, the addition of the "sword skill" system adds a fun twist on the souls-like feel of the combat system. As of right now the world feels quite empty. It's obviously a story game so it will be linear in nature however, there is an absence of "life" in the world which makes it feel dull after a while. The repetitive nature of the game is its major setback. A lack in variety of creatures and monster drops makes the crafting system a bit stale. Character customization is a bit lacking. I wish there were more options but I also believe that's a pretty common thing in these types of games. All in all as long as they continue to update the game it should be awesome! I just hope they don't stop here because my final comment is as previously stated; it feels empty. Score 6.75/10
This is not my Aincrad. This is what you would get if someone offered you a cold soda on a hot day and instead brought you some "fruit flavored" sparkling water canned drink from the backseat of their car. Stop claiming that this is acceptable. Have better standards for yourselves and companies will have no choice but to comply. We are many, they are not. And...Bandai Namco? I had high hopes. Do better.
Honestly I've played the game for about 14 hours and I never really saw the frustration that everyone is saying because it never really spouted being open world. Everyone seems to be insinuating that it should be just like SAO because this is one of the closest games to the anime. But I love that you play as just a random character, that might be able to be part of the main anime story in a way. Honestly i would really hope for this to go the DLC route adding new floors up to floor 100, because I've never found a game that made me want to play a permadeath mode. People should just play the game on a harder difficulty so they can focus on something else like playing the game instead of hating the game when they have barely broke the surface of the game.
Play the demo first. This is not an open world game and there are more enemy types than in the demo. If you play the demo, then you know the gameplay already, but the enemies get more punishing, and so does the amount of enemies in dungeons. You can also craft many types of armour and weapons. Both have interesting mods as you find then or craft them, and get more interesting the further you get into the game. The story starts slow, but gets more interesting, but I'm still a bit early in the game. Seems to run rather fine on my setup, and I haven't had any problems running the full game.
Not good but not bad
To give my honest opinion, I went into this game a little worried after seeing some of the negative reviews. However, I didn't let them shape my overall opinion of the game as I played. I've really enjoyed the overall gameplay though I go feel like some support items don't get utilized as much. The combat is great, albeit slightly basic but that just fits the vibe of SAO in general. My only major gripe that I've had is that the main story kinda ends on a note that feels "unfinished". By this I mean that there are a LOT of plot hooks that are left unresolved. Regardless, I still recommend this game if you're a fan of SAO. I do actually have a suggestion though if any of the game Devs actually read the reviews. In Death Game mode, wouldn't it make more sense for it to actually start once the "Death Game" has begun? Cause having it start during the Beta Test portion doesn't really make much sense. Just a small note I'd thought to mention after testing it myself.
People be shting on this game like crazy, i honestly am enjoying my time thoroughly, sure, price is a little steep for this kinda game, but let's go through a quick pro/con - Pros- reminds me of like... Dark Cloud/Chronicle, or early ./hack games. Pretty fluid combat system, fun skills, a variety of different weapons per type (wish there were more 'types') Story's kinda cool (no spoilers) Cons- Overworld tends to feel a little empty. Teleport crystals bruh why tf do i keep having to run all the way back for chests i didn't loot -sigh- More companion variety / weapon types All in all a solid 7/10 so far for me, and still going Recommend if you're not easily persuaded by sub 1hour player-reviews on steam/X
