duplicity loop is a story-focused visual novel developed by batbeato and postmanic and published by batbeato that combines dark fantasy, psychological drama, magical girl fiction, and surreal adventure into a deeply character-driven narrative. Inspired by the themes and imagery of Alice in Wonderland, the game presents a version of Wonderland that is far removed from whimsical childhood fantasy. Instead, it serves as a mysterious and often unsettling realm where emotional wounds, hidden truths, and personal conflicts are given physical form. Through branching choices, multiple endings, and a strong emphasis on character development, the game delivers a narrative experience that is as introspective as it is imaginative. The story centers on Abriel, a young woman who unexpectedly finds herself drawn into a strange alternate world. Wonderland is not presented as a place of wonder and innocence but rather as a complex society governed by unfamiliar rules and dominated by the influence of a powerful Queen. Upon arriving, Abriel encounters magical girls who serve this ruler and quickly becomes entangled in conflicts she does not fully understand. As she struggles to adapt to her new surroundings, she is also forced to confront painful aspects of her own identity and past, creating a narrative that constantly balances external adventure with internal reflection. One of the game's greatest strengths is its interpretation of Wonderland itself. The setting captures the dreamlike unpredictability associated with the classic source material while introducing a darker and more mature tone. Logic often feels unreliable, appearances can be deceptive, and the world frequently challenges both the protagonist's perceptions and the player's expectations. This sense of instability contributes significantly to the atmosphere and ensures that exploration of the narrative remains compelling throughout the experience. The magical girl elements are woven into the story in a way that feels both familiar and unconventional. While the genre is often associated with optimism, friendship, and heroism, duplicity loop explores more complicated themes through its cast of magical girls. Their relationships, motivations, and loyalties are rarely straightforward, and many characters possess emotional depth that gradually unfolds as the story progresses. This approach allows the game to examine themes of responsibility, sacrifice, and self-worth while maintaining a distinctive fantasy identity. Character development plays a central role in the overall experience. Abriel's personal journey is arguably the heart of the story, and much of the narrative's emotional impact comes from watching her confront difficult truths about herself. The game invests considerable time in exploring her thoughts, fears, and vulnerabilities, making her growth feel earned and believable. Rather than simply reacting to events around her, she evolves through her experiences, creating a protagonist whose struggles resonate on a personal level. The branching narrative structure enhances player engagement by giving choices genuine significance. Decisions influence character relationships, alter story events, and determine which ending players ultimately reach. The presence of multiple routes encourages replayability, while the existence of a true ending provides additional motivation to explore every possible outcome. This design ensures that players remain actively involved in shaping the narrative rather than simply observing it unfold. A notable aspect of duplicity loop is its willingness to tackle mature and emotionally challenging subject matter. Themes such as trauma, grief, loss, violence, and personal suffering are explored throughout the story. These topics are integrated into both the world-building and character arcs, giving the narrative a sense of emotional weight that distinguishes it from lighter fantasy adventures. The game does not shy away from difficult conversations, and this commitment to serious themes helps create a more impactful and memorable experience. The visual presentation contributes significantly to the atmosphere. The artwork combines colorful fantasy imagery with darker undertones, creating a striking contrast that mirrors the narrative itself. Character designs are expressive and distinctive, helping the cast stand out while reinforcing the magical and surreal nature of the setting. Meanwhile, the backgrounds effectively capture the beauty and unease of Wonderland, making every location feel like part of a larger dream that could shift at any moment. The pacing benefits from the visual novel format, allowing the story to develop gradually and giving important emotional moments time to resonate. Dialogue and character interactions are given proper attention, helping relationships feel authentic and meaningful. The slower pace also enhances the mystery surrounding Wonderland, as revelations are carefully distributed throughout the narrative rather than delivered all at once. Another strength is the game's atmosphere. Even during quieter scenes, there is often a lingering sense of uncertainty that keeps players invested. The combination of psychological themes, surreal environments, and emotionally charged storytelling creates a mood that is both captivating and occasionally unsettling. This atmosphere remains one of the game's defining qualities and helps distinguish it from more conventional fantasy visual novels. duplicity loop ultimately succeeds as a thoughtful and emotionally rich visual novel that uses fantasy as a vehicle for exploring deeply personal themes. Its dark reimagining of Wonderland, memorable cast, branching narrative structure, and focus on psychological storytelling combine to create an experience that is both engaging and meaningful. Players who appreciate character-driven stories, surreal world-building, and narratives willing to explore difficult emotional territory will likely find much to admire in this unique adventure. I'm not good with words and expressing things in depth but this was a very enjoyable game. I won't go into detail cause spoilers but it's good and I like the relationship betweem Abriel and Folly. Also some nice author notes that you can view after finishing the game, the part about adopting a dog (which is saying something that happened in real life and is not part of the game) which is a horse in disguise made me laugh. I guess that's a bit spoiler-y but not of the game itself. I have not replayed it, as I just finished it a bit ago, to see if there would be slight differences upon repeats but I don't know if there would be. I'd likely find out for myself in the future and you could find out for yourself too, it's free so what do you have to lose? If you're looking at this game and you're contemplating getting it, go for it cause it can't hurt and if you learn it isn't really your cup of tea then that's ok too.
This is a game i can say is probably one of my new favorite horror visual novels!
