Dune Strider is the kind of project that immediately reveals its origins as a student-developed experiment, but in doing so, it also exposes a surprisingly cohesive vision underneath its rough edges. Created by Dust Bunnies and published by Breda University of Applied Sciences, it places you in control of a sand-sailing merchant vessel navigating a vast desert, blending elements of trading simulation, open-ended exploration, and light combat into a single, interconnected loop. It doesn’t attempt to overwhelm with systems or narrative, instead focusing on a core idea: surviving and profiting in a harsh, shifting environment where every journey carries both opportunity and risk. The primary gameplay revolves around moving between settlements, buying and selling goods, and gradually building a more efficient trading route. At its best, this loop taps into a familiar but satisfying rhythm—identify where resources are cheap, transport them across the desert, and sell them where they are scarce. The game encourages players to learn its economy through observation rather than explicit instruction, which gives early progress a sense of discovery. As you begin to recognize patterns and optimize routes, there’s a quiet satisfaction in turning what initially feels like guesswork into a more deliberate strategy. What prevents this system from becoming purely routine is the presence of danger. The desert is not an empty space but one populated by hostile forces, particularly roaming pirates who can intercept your journey. Combat unfolds in real time, requiring you to maneuver your vessel, manage positioning, and use available abilities to survive encounters. While the mechanics themselves are relatively simple, they add a layer of tension that complements the otherwise methodical pacing of trading. These moments of conflict break up long stretches of travel, even if they eventually become predictable due to limited enemy variety and a lack of deeper combat systems. Exploration plays a central role in shaping the experience. The desert feels expansive, with distant settlements and routes that invite curiosity. There is a certain appeal in setting out across open sands, unsure of what lies ahead, and gradually uncovering new paths or destinations. However, this same sense of scale can also work against the game. Travel often involves long stretches with minimal interaction, and without enough dynamic events or meaningful discoveries, these journeys can begin to feel repetitive. The balance between atmosphere and engagement is uneven, with moments of immersion occasionally giving way to monotony. Progression is tied to upgrading your vessel and improving your ability to survive and profit. These upgrades provide incremental benefits, allowing you to carry more goods, endure combat more effectively, or navigate more efficiently. While this system gives a sense of forward movement, it remains fairly limited in scope. The upgrades do not dramatically alter gameplay, and as a result, the feeling of growth is present but somewhat restrained. The game hints at deeper customization possibilities but never fully develops them. Visually, Dune Strider adopts a stylized, minimalist approach that works well within its scope. The desert environments are clean and readable, with a consistent color palette that reinforces the sense of isolation and scale. The design of the sand-barge and surrounding elements effectively communicates the game’s concept, even if the overall presentation lacks detail and variety. It’s not a visually striking game, but it maintains a clear and cohesive identity that supports its mechanics. The audio design follows a similarly understated approach. Sound effects provide basic feedback for movement and combat, but the overall soundscape is sparse. Music is minimal and tends to fade into the background, which can enhance the feeling of solitude but also contributes to the sense of emptiness during longer sessions. Like many aspects of the game, it feels functional rather than fully realized. Where Dune Strider struggles most is in its level of polish. Interface design, navigation, and quality-of-life features often feel underdeveloped, creating friction in what should be a smooth, methodical experience. The lack of certain conveniences, such as clear guidance or reliable systems for managing progress, can make the game feel more cumbersome than intended. These issues highlight its nature as a learning project, where strong ideas are present but not fully refined. Despite these shortcomings, there is a clear sense of ambition behind the design. The combination of trading, exploration, and combat is conceptually strong, and there are moments where these elements align to create something genuinely engaging. Successfully navigating a dangerous route, surviving an ambush, and returning with valuable cargo captures the essence of what the game is trying to achieve. It’s in these moments that the potential of the concept becomes most apparent. Ultimately, Dune Strider feels like a foundation rather than a finished product. It demonstrates a clear understanding of how its core systems can work together, but it stops short of developing them into a fully cohesive experience. The ideas are compelling, but the execution lacks the depth and refinement needed to sustain long-term engagement. In the end, Dune Strider is best approached as an experimental sandbox with a strong central concept and visible limitations. It offers a glimpse of a more fully realized trading and exploration game, one that could emerge with further development and polish. As it stands, it is an interesting and occasionally engaging experience that rewards patience, but it remains uneven in its delivery. Rating: 6/10

Great concept, as others have mentioned it's let down by lack of game saving, and the game play is slow.
Interesting concept
As of now it's free, but not worth putting any time in to. No map, poor handling, and the boss disappeared halfway through on me.
It's amazing. Exercise the coordination ability of hand and brain. I like it ^_^
For Free its a nice little time waster. I wouldn't recommend paying for it though. Pros: nice concept nice little time waster cons: repeating soundtrack of one song with one instrument OVERALL: 8/10 when its FREE!
For a student project, this is not a bad game. The biggest drawback is no ability to save the game. It would be nice if there were more dunes and less canyon - it gets a little tight in areas and it can be hard to see. I hope they can add a saving feature. I spent a couple of hours trying it out, and what little progress I've made is now gone. I haven't explored the story that seems to be there...
Dune Strider exploration/trading game needs a save option For a student project, it is very good and at FREE, it is really good.
