A Bold Revolution Built on a Hollow Core

★ 5/10 — It Removed the Gacha, Not the Grind
⊕ BEST FOR: Anime looter RPGs, earnable characters and weapons, long-term accounts, dual narratives, and music. ⊖ NOT FOR: Weighty combat, precise gunplay, fluid movement, varied missions, light grinding, clean systems, good optimization, or proven live-service stability. ▣ Mobile Benchmarks: Google Play 3.7/5 · App Store US 3.7/5 · App Store Japan 3.1/5 · App Store Taiwan 2.8/5.

◆ Opening
Before launch, Duet Night Abyss sold itself well. It removed random character and weapon gacha and global stamina, then put anime characters together with Warframe-like blueprints, Mods, materials, and repeat missions. It was not offering better rates, but a different deal between money, time, and ownership. That ambition became the game's best advertisement. The final closed beta still had conventional character gacha, and its removal was announced only two months before release. Whatever preparation happened behind the scenes, the launch version was not rebuilt from its foundations. Fragments, currencies, shops, rotations, and repeat tasks stayed: a gacha skeleton without its payment core. By now, I think it is fair to call the experiment a failure. Estimates put its first four months at 2.2 million mobile downloads, nearly $3.5 million in revenue, and China iOS D30 retention around 1.5%. Its Steam release peaked at roughly 2,000 concurrent players; mobile user scores are not ideal either. These figures are incomplete, but hard to read as success. It got attention, yet kept too few players.
◆ Strengths
⊕ Free Does Not Mean Unrestricted, but It Is Still Fairer Every character and weapon can be earned without paid randomness or global stamina, but they are not unrestricted. New characters first appear in the version-limited Immersive Theatre, then move to weekly Nocturnal Echoes and only later to the permanent Secret Letter shop. Rewards still involve RNG; more Introns need Thoughts. The route is slow and can be exhausting, but the endpoint is visible and no paid 50/50 waits along the way. That remains fairer. ⊕ The Story Has More Weight Than the Combat The two protagonists come from different parts of society and view the same declining world from opposite sides. Its heavier material works best, especially the factional conflict and character relationships, though it never quite reaches its ambition. Music does much of the work in emotional scenes and boss climaxes. Stiff faces and uneven cutscenes do them no favour. ⊕ Demon Wedges Allow Builds, but Not Much Theorycrafting Demon Wedges have fixed stats and effects; categories, Tracks, and Tolerance shape a loadout. Some change ammunition, multishot, projectiles, homing, attack patterns, or skill loops, and every character can carry both melee and ranged weapons. There are choices, but not enough depth for theorycrafters. Many late builds still end with Skill Intensity, ATK, CRIT, or trigger stacks. ⊕ The Developers Respond, but Usually One Version Late Versions 1.1 through 1.5 improved rendering, controls, crafting, Secret Letters, co-op, Auto Continue, and Calamity Weapon farming. The game is better now. Responses come late: a new system may wear players down for a full version before its fix arrives.
◆ Weaknesses
⊖ Combat Is Flashy but Has Almost No Weight Guns lack convincing recoil and low-end sound. Reloading has almost no presence; even a precise hit rarely feels special. Melee has weak hit pause, unreliable tracking, and light enemy reactions. Despite everything on screen, damage numbers are often the clearest sign that a hit landed. Combat appears fast but carries little force, a serious problem after hundreds of repetitions. ⊖ Movement, Skills, and Weapons Never Work as One Helix Leap, dashes, slides, aerial attacks, melee, and ranged weapons are all here. They rarely flow together. Momentum stops suddenly, some skills hold the character in place, and transitions feel broken. You control one character while up to two AI allies follow. With no mid-combat character switching, the small active skill set stays small. Weapons should cover that gap, yet skill-led builds often leave them as stats, triggers, or support tools. ⊖ Unlimited Farming Exposes Empty Missions With no global stamina limit, players can keep farming. It sounds generous, but also makes weak missions impossible to hide. Resource rooms, defence waves, Secret Letter RNG, duplicate Wedges, and layered upgrades turn progress into routine labour. It is too dry and time-consuming for anime RPG players used to lighter farming. Looter fans, meanwhile, get too little variety in enemies, missions, and loot. Abyssal Compasses, repeated waves, and the efficiency advantage of fixed co-op groups add work, not variety. Auto Continue and batch functions help, but feel awkward: one of the game's best updates lets it complete core content by itself. A free character loses value when earning it becomes background work with too few interesting places to use it. ⊖ The Late Pivot Left a Fragmented Economy Gacha disappeared late; most of its surrounding economy did not. Thoughts, duplicate progression, delayed rotations, weekly sources, currencies, and upgrade routes remain. Pull planning became an exhausting PvE resource map. The shop mixes cosmetic gacha, direct assets, fragments, passes, packs, mounts, and paid acceleration. Pan Studio is a young team under Hero Games. Some ideas work alone; together they never fully connect. ⊖ The World and Technology Never Match the Promotion Later regions, lighting, models, and cutscenes look better. Exploration is still mostly decoration, with rewards that give little reason to bother. At launch, the game often looked blurry and ordinary beside its promotional footage. Mobile users still report heat, stutter, crashes, awkward controls, and boot failures. The recommended PC specification asks for 32 GB of memory, far too much for the image on screen. ⊖ The Security Incident Crossed a Line In March 2026, a compromised standalone-PC update channel delivered an information-stealing file to players. The anti-cheat controversy was separate. For a time, installing the game's own update put the player's PC and accounts at risk. Crashes are one thing; malware from the updater is another. Trusting it for years is now much harder.
◆ Conclusion
As a product experiment, Duet Night Abyss seems to have failed. What it tried still matters. It shows that an anime live service can at least try to separate character ownership from paid randomness. One struggling game cannot reform the industry, but it gives later projects a precedent and one less excuse for calling character gacha the only workable model. That does not make this a healthy live service. Versions 1.4 and 1.5 brought some players back, but activity still rises and falls with each update. The business model remains unproven. The game is alive; whether this model can keep it alive for years is another question. Removing gacha solved one restriction, but did not provide a replacement. Duet Night Abyss took gambling out of character and weapon ownership without making those assets enjoyable to earn or use. It still has worthwhile stories, memorable music, likeable characters, fairer ownership, and some interesting build ideas. Beside them are weightless combat, broken flow, repeat missions, technical problems, a fragmented economy, and damaged trust. The promise sold before launch still feels more complete than the game itself. For me, the result is not only weak. It is deeply disappointing. If the devs change their ways and try to make the game more generous and fun and actually listen to constructive feedback then I will play this game more and recommend it. but they don't, what a f*cking disappointment
Despite the boring gameplay, uninspired character design, horrid monetization scheme (one time use dye using premium currency), plain broken game with bugged animations, unsatisfying movement for a WF inspired game, horrible balancing (new character one shot everything, old one smiles and look pretty and gun being basically unviable), the worst gear farming system imaginable and possibly the worst security breach seen in modern times (hacked twice) I still come back to this game because big milky mommy make neurons activate. 7/10 could use a few more security breaches.
Disclaimer: I played this game a good amount before it came out onto Steam, and played it primarily Mobile afterward for a good while. I cannot in good conscience recommend this game. I really gave it several different chances. I was always interested in seeing what the developers wanted to do to improve the game. I was eager that they had announced they were going to actually slow down the time between updates to work on core fundamentals. That was the stuff that genuinely got me excited about the game. But what really broke the straw for me was the new form of gacha skins. They took the model out of Where Winds Meet, where you start with 1 token, but then the next draw takes 3, then 6, etc. This games cosmetic monetization is trash. Now I hear you say, "It's just cosmetics." Brother, Duet Night Abyss's main selling point is that it's Warframe but for weebs. The aesthetic is what is carrying the game, and they know that. That's why they're selling it so hard. Because it certainly isn't gameplay. Some people will say it's unfair to compare the game to Warframe due to the resources and development time that the games have had in comparison. Too bad. Life isn't fair. And you are a competing live service game. Guess what? So is the game that Pan Studio took such heavy handed inspiration from. You're getting compared. Combat? Temu Warframe. Two abilities per character, no weapon stances, you can't even currently ADS without firing. Missions? Temu Warframe. They're all the same but the tilesets have nothing to them visually interesting at all. Level Design? Temu Warframe. Similar to above, but the open world is just... bland. Story telling? The story is fine, and it's more frequent than Warframes, but Warframe's knows how to hit harder. Prices? Worse than Warframe. The only pluses I can really give DNA over Warframe in terms of gameplay, farming for the weapons and characters you want (as long as they aren't the newest) is significantly easier. Just buy your tickets, AFK some stuff, boom. You can hit them within 20-30 letters. But that's soiled when you know you have to repeat this process 6x for them to be optimized. The other part I llike is that you can bring 2 of your other built characters as AI companions. Warframe's specters have always been trash so this is genuinely nice. Once again, soiled by the fact that it's to make playing half the game AFK easier. It's a nice thing to have but at the same time, you are solving a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. But thats just how chinese mobile slop tends to go, really. My point with these comparisons is that, if the game is worse than its inspiration in just about every other conceivable way than the aesthetic, than the aesthetic needs to be accessible. But no. We gotta have multiple types of gacha skins. So where I once gave props to Pan Studio for removing gacha characters, I now have to rescind, because gacha is very much alive and well and prominent in this game. Just not in the usual way. Not to mention how depressing this companies social medias are. 85% of their posts are them posting showcases and ads for new cosmetics. It's frankly embarrassing. I tried to give this game a decent shake. But with the newest level of gambling-based cosmetics, any good will I had for this game is burned away. Stay away from it. Just go play Warframe. It respects your time, money, and intelligence far better. And it's on mobile devices too, so that's no longer a leg up this game has either.
Positives: - The gacha seems to be only for cosmetics, much better than having to gamble for the characters themselves. The caveat is that the characters need to be farmed for. If you play the game a lot then it's a positive, otherwise you can buy the characters for about how much it costs to gamble for them in a gacha game - English voice acting is okay. Much better than what other gacha games offer Negatives: - Requires an external account to log in, can't use your steam account - Terrible performance at high resolutions, 1440p native I was getting 50~ fps average with 1% lows around 15-20 on the "average" preset. Upscaling from 1080p bumped it up to 90~ fps with 40-50 1% lows. Heavily reliant on upscaling which I do not support - First hour of the game is a nothing burger, you get shown a random 3 second scene from a cutscene you'll see in the next 20 or so minutes followed by a villain vagueposting. Nothing feels connected to anything. MC is an amnesiac cardboard cutout that sits there and asks questions without end - Combat feels like a traditional gacha swap system that decided to grow a warframe-shaped tumor. The physics feel like trying to run in a dream, and every skill wants to entirely stop your momentum. The enemies are either hoards of mindless AI that die in 1-2 hits or a DPS check boss - From what I've seen online (as I haven't gotten to that point in the game) there is no "resin" or "waveplate" system that timegates farming for materials. However, the timegate is replaced with an afkgate. You just sit there for hours to farm materials while doing no inputs. This is no better than an idle game that you need to keep open 24/7 For linux users: I tried launching the game with the same dw-proton version I've used for every single gacha game, and it didn't work. ProtonDB reviews say that the game intentionally bricks dw-proton on every update. This was the first time in a few months I had to update dw-proton to play something. I recommend you look elsewhere for a "forever game". If you want to play this game regardless, you'll need a compositor or desktop environment that will play nicely with the game. Gamescope can't be used for this game, at least on hyprland, as it completely breaks camera movement.
The controls feel jank and jittery, melee is trying to be gacha and forgot it's trying to copy Warframe. For the love of ♥♥♥♥, the guns are terrible, I just right click and it auto-aims for me. I turned that option off but they still feel like "press and hold" instead of any meat, chunk, nothing. It's just a right click number brr and has little to 0 satisfaction to give. I could forgive all of that, ALL OF IT, if not for the fact that the devs decided to give all three of the kids in the game gooner skins. Say whatever the ♥♥♥♥ you want, put as many gooner skins on all of the big tiddy women, the men, whatever but the devs put them on KIDS. CHILDREN. As soon as I got to the character customization window, checked out every thing I could and then for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles checked the skins for them all, I was hoping for something clean, cute, ♥♥♥♥ I don't know even replacing the kids entirely with goofy mascots would've been fine. But no, they decided to put in gooner ♥♥♥♥. On the kids. Who already made it iffy as ♥♥♥♥, due to the clothing they were put in. Grow a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spine already, go to therapy and fix yourselves if you worked on this and didn't object.
The fact it's free2play bound to its servers, severely disappoints me. But if it will become a buy-to-play offline game with cosmetic DLCs, consider me one of the first ones to spend my money on it. Devs, think about an offline solution, in case if everything goes south.
pls fix the optimization issue.. its a stutter fest i know my pc is just an entry level but this is UE4 game not UE5...
