DREDGE — 18.6 hrs Fun 8 · Skill Ceiling 6 · Onboarding Tax 3 · Jank Tax 8 · Dad Tax 8 The Verdict: 7.5/10 — "Worth the sleep debt." Every game on my backlog wants to be a system I optimize. DREDGE just wanted me to go fishing, and then, very quietly, started ruining my sleep in a completely different way than usual. You putter around in a boat, sell your catch, upgrade the hull, and the game lets you believe for a while that this is a cozy loop about tides and tackle boxes. It is not. Stay out past dark and the water starts lying to you — fog rolls in wrong, the compass gets ideas, and you realize the fatigue meter isn't cosmetic, it's a leash. 18.6 hours was exactly enough to see the whole shape of it: contained, deliberate, no padding stapled on to hit a runtime target. I finished it and didn't feel like I'd been asked to grind for the privilege. The horror side is more dread than jump-scare, which suits someone whose actual fear response was permanently recalibrated by two kids and a P&L. The tension comes from a simple, honest rule — don't be greedy, don't be out too late — and watching yourself break that rule anyway because there's one more fish in the net. If I've got a gripe, it's that the game tips its hand on its mysteries a little early; once you've seen the trick twice, some of the uncertainty drains out. Still lands more often than not. This is the rare backlog title that respects the fact that I have thirty minutes and not three hours. Short sessions work. Nothing punishes you for logging off mid-tide. Verdict: a tight, well-made scare wearing a fishing hat, and it knows exactly when to end. 👍 — for anyone who wants dread in bite-sized sessions, not a 100-hour system to master.
One of the best Indie Game!
DREDGE is a deceptively peaceful fishing adventure. You play as the captain of a recently-shipwrecked small trawler, as you explore a mysterious archipelago - you fish and travel during the day, while the night brings a thick fog which conceals something unnatural. Your goal is selling your catch, upgrading the boat, and dredging further from land for long-sunk secrets. By day it's a gentle life-sim, but as night falls, a steep paranoia takes hold and the darkness unknown begins to distort reality and our fisherman’s perception of it. Your journey will take you between fishing grounds, completing puzzles, helping the locals, managing resources to make the most of your daylight, returning to port before the fish lose their freshness, or before the darkness takes hold. Selling your catch provides money for improved engines, rods, nets, crab pots, lights, and additional hull space, while dredging wrecks and debris produces materials needed to expand the boat further. Engaging with the local population helps further demystify where you ended up, as you slowly unravel each region's troubled history. Since much of the challenge lies in careful inventory management, every upgrade decision becomes a real trade-off between speed, cargo space, and the ability to survive whatever surfaces once the fog rolls in - which is DREDGEs’ way of turning routine errands into constant, quietly tense decision-making. The islands you visit each carry their own broken history and corrupted local legends. Self-contained locations, each hiding a discrete "anomaly" with its own lore and environmental storytelling to be discovered, is close in spirit to SCP Foundation-style fiction. DREDGE heavily favours narrative exposition: a strange object, an inconspicuous town, a "researcher" or fisherman just doing their job while your instincts insist something is deeply off. DREDGE never explains its horrors fully, as exactly the kind of unsettling, lore-driven world-building that anomalous fiction communities have built entire fandoms around. This self-imposing comparison to the SCP folklore is merely an interpretive sermon of its enigma. Like the best stories reminiscent of Strugtaski’s or Pelevin’s literary works, DREDGE rarely explains its abnormalities directly; instead, it presents strange objects, corrupted wildlife, and remote locations governed by rules that we can only partially comprehend, alluring to explore the dark deep beyond.

It is a pretty decent Lovecraftian story and it ran really well in my Steam Deck. My experience with Dredge is that it is a perfect game to wind down at night and to chill. I do not think it is very eerie or spooky for my palate, however I do admit that the environment is pretty immersive.
