Short and to the point: the game is completely overwhelming in the sense that I never really know where I’m supposed to go. I had never played a gacha game before, because the whole pay-to-play slop thing turns me off completely, even though a lot of these games look genuinely good. Dragonsword Awakening therefore felt like a real breath of fresh air at first — but that changed quickly. The game feels very thin, with too many resources you have to collect through various endless grinds. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
Visuals:
It looks okay. The important characters stand out, they’re varied and generally well done. The remaining NPCs, on the other hand, already start looping extremely often in the first two minutes in town. The art style is pretty, but it can’t keep up with other titles in the same genre.
Animations
Hah! HAH! The fights might look spectacular visually, but everything outside of combat is so lazily done. Actions aren’t even shown — they’re just implied. Character A pulls Character B away because they screwed up — you see none of it. The characters just idle around.
Voice acting:
The biggest problem for me is that there’s only the Korean voice track. At the very least an English dub should have been included for the global release.
Controls + combat system:
Giga boring. Auto-attack spam, two action skills, and two combos that can be executed under certain conditions. Some skills let you switch from one character to one of the other two in the active team and trigger their combo skill. That’s fun for the first 2–3 hours, after that it becomes extremely repetitive.
Characters:
Clichéd stereotypes. That’s really all there is to say. You look at the design and immediately know what you’re getting.
Story:
It lost me, because everything in the game world sidetracks you. The story itself is told through quests, most of which are dull fetch quests, often with routes that go from A to B, from B back to A, then to C, back to A, then to C again. Nowadays you can do this better.
Gacha mechanics:
Since I’m a newcomer to the genre I can only say this much: it’s too much. All the items, the in-game shops that require a resource that functions exactly like premium currency in actual gacha games — except you earn it by playing. On top of that there are daily quests and weekly quests… in a single-player game? Why?!
Verdict:[h/2] Sometimes less is simply more. Dragonsword Awakening is packed with so much stuff I can only describe it as “screen noise.”
DragonSword: Awakening is an anime-style open-world action RPG that offers fast-paced combat and a rich narrative. It successfully removes the predatory elements typical of gacha games. DragonSword: Awakening centers on a hero named Lute who awakens in the ruins of a once-great kingdom. Lute is bound to an ancient sword, a relic of the last dragon knight. The narrative unfolds as Lute embarks on a quest to uncover the fate of the fallen kingdom and confront a dragon that has reawakened after 60 years. Features : - Combat System : The game features a unique character-switching mechanic that allows players to rotate characters mid-combo or signal skills, enhancing combat depth. - Tag-Team Action : Players can unleash spectacular status ailment effects, making battles dynamic and strategic. - Open World : Players explore the continent of Orbis, filled with quests and secrets tied to the lore of six legendary heroes. - Familiars : Familiars play a crucial role in enhancing exploration and mobility throughout the game. Each familiar category offers unique movement abilities and passive bonuses that contribute to a more efficient traversal of the open world. - Online / Offline : You can play completely offline with no internet connection required, or you can choose to play online and invite friends or discord players to join you in online raids and boss battles. There is no current full-on open world multiplayer, but it is listed in the roadmap as an upcoming feature. Note : Although DragonSword: Awakening is out of early access, the game still has more updates on the way. The post-launch roadmap includes four new free heroes arriving sequentially in the second half of 2026, a rift system for dimensional combat, hero requests story expansions, and quality-of-life updates like improved combat feel, photo mode, and a help system.
Starting the game took about 2 minutes of a blank screen to start.. I was okay with letting that slide, than a crash getting into the castle, I can probably fix all these problems myself, but I really don't want to and after researching crashes seems to be a common problem with a chance of bricking saves.. The game looked amazing, but I don't have the patience anymore for games that can't run properly. Refunded.

Overall having a good experience, combat needs some work though. I bought this to support the fact that not every anime style JRPG needs to be a gacha.
If I had to compare this game to another it's basically Genshin, but way better there's no crappy gatcha system to make your wallet cry. You earn all your gear and characters through progression. The world and atmosphere will also feel extremely familiar to you too if you've ever played that game. The combat as well, especially with the skills and swapping of characters. Yet in some ways it feels a lot more polished and fluid in my honest opinion. Of course the mounts are a plus, bit bummed that the only vocal dialog options are in Korean it's not a deal breaker though. Would recommend this game to those who enjoyed Genshin and possibly even the Zelda franchise.
Do you like open world anime RPG's like Genshin and Wuthering Waves? Would you rather pay a very reasonable $30 dollars up front and remove all of the predatory mobile systems these games have? Then this is the game for you! No gacha, no paid battlepass, no energy system, none of that can be found here. This game does have purchasable DLC, but they are all cosmetics and not needed at all to fully enjoy the game. And yes, the game is a lot of fun. This is the team behind Hundred Soul, and their unique take of treating elements as status effects is present in Dragonsword and works great.
Great game. Scratches the Genshin itch without breaking your bank. I support this.
