Over 30 hours into this game and I still do not really understand what the designers expect from me in combat. You need to block non-parriable attacks, but they break your shield, but you also need your shield to parry attacks. So you end up in a lot of situations where you just die without really feeling like you did anything wrong or can improve what you're doing. The only alternative is running away like a little ♥♥♥♥♥ and hiding (which doesn't really seem like something The Slayer would do). You also cannot interrupt melee attacks to parry, which is insane. Play Shadow of Mordor and tell me with a straight face that Doom Dark Ages has a more intuitive and sensible parry system, lol. The whole mantra behind the "combat loop" (still not convinced this game even has a cohesive combat loop) was "stand and fight", but if you do that you're literally dead. All the evasion mechanics of Eternal have been gutted out of this game. So, again, I'm not sure what the designers want from me in combat. If you try to evade, you basically just end up taking cover and hiding like a ♥♥♥♥♥. If you try to stand your ground, you just die. If you try to move around in combat, your shield will break and you'll encounter innumerable no-win-scenarios that give you nothing to learn from or improve on. It's like you need to keep moving in a game that, by its own stated design philosophy, is hostile to movement and evasion. Makes zero sense.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is different. And I love the game for it. I find it impressive how each modern DOOM game is a fast-paced FPS at its core, yet plays so differently. And while it seems TDA is more controversial compared to Eternal, I really enjoyed my time with it. The shield is fun to use. Demon killing feels as satisfying as ever. The locations are gorgeous. The maps are bigger and more open, while the game itself is still linear - the perfect balance for me. In most games, I want to collect everything and explore every nook and cranny of the map. This can get boring, but not here. Also, the game runs amazingly. Yes, an RT card is required, but still, this is one of the most optimized games I've played, and it runs better than many older 'AAA' releases. But not everything is perfect - the music, while good, is a noticeable step down compared to 2016 and Eternal. I'm also not the biggest fan of the mission challenges, and the game often forces unnecessary mini-cutscenes mid-gameplay that I felt ruined the flow at certain points. Overall though, one of the best FPS games available. Highly recommended!
Bought it on sale and i still didn't enjoy it enough to not request a refund. To me, it just feel like a watered down Doom Eternal. Music is meh, weapons are meh, they removed the over the top voilent executions with generic punches, they added a parry function that honestly just ruins the flow of combat. You even somehow feel faster and less agile at the same time. Its all honestly very dissapointing.
I loved Doom 2016 Eternal but the content has been pushed away from a horror genre to an eye-candy arcade experience that feels painfully formulaic. I never post reviews but I do love Doom and actually feel very strong about it's potential upside. My biggest quip is that the game actually has a very cool premise and character. The game mechanics (not the guns but fights) feel contrived and get boring very quickly. Game play should move the story and unfortunately it feels like a predictable chore in too many instances. - The graphics are fantastic but the amount of colorful eye-candy makes the game feel immature and kills a lot of the world building. - The sound team is amazing. I'd even go so far to say that they produce some of the most epic effects in both the gaming and movie market. I want to see Doom do well and remain mature. However the fight scenarios the team is using to move the game are really failing how it should truly play and feel. 3/5 Stars
I have been playing DOOM since its shareware days and I did enjoy its "Dark Ages" theme. The scenery as with all recent DOOM games is top notch, and even with a lot on screen manages to run very smoothly. The music, one of my favorite aspects of the modern DOOM games is also top notch and keeps you pumped up for the constant action. This experience of course is basically linear and really becomes a run and gun. That said.... I miss creep and horror based DOOM. DOOM 3 for me was amazing. While I love the run and gun, if the dev ever came back with a solid horror based DOOM I would be the first to pre-prder.
Game is an easy 8/10 for its base game on immediate post-launch. With Update 2, max of 8.3. Post DLC however, 9.5/10. Absolutely wonderfully fun game, a perfect lovechild of Dark Ages and Eternal.
Love this game series, but most importantly I love you id Software forever <3
Чудова гра, особисто для мене, це найкраща частина в серії
