Disney•Pixar Brave: The Video Game sits comfortably in that space occupied by many licensed adaptations—it doesn’t attempt to radically redefine its genre, but it also avoids feeling like a rushed or careless tie-in. Developed by Behaviour Interactive, the game takes the foundation of Pixar’s Brave and reshapes it into a more traditional action-adventure experience, expanding the story beyond the film rather than simply retelling it. This choice gives it a bit more identity than expected, allowing players to engage with Merida’s world through a longer, more game-driven journey that emphasizes action, exploration, and light progression. The narrative moves beyond the film’s central conflict and introduces a broader magical threat tied to corrupted land and ancient forces, giving Merida a clearer role as both protector and active hero. While the storytelling remains fairly straightforward and rarely surprises, it does a decent job of maintaining the tone and personality of the original material. Merida herself is portrayed consistently as strong-willed and independent, and her journey carries a sense of purpose even if it lacks deeper emotional complexity. It feels less like a cinematic story and more like a functional framework designed to support gameplay, which works well enough given the game’s focus. Gameplay revolves around a blend of melee combat, ranged archery, and environmental interaction. Merida’s bow is easily the highlight, offering a satisfying and responsive system that encourages precision and timing. The inclusion of elemental arrows—fire, ice, wind, and earth—adds a layer of variety, allowing players to approach enemies and obstacles in slightly different ways. Combat itself is accessible and easy to grasp, making it suitable for a wide range of players, but it doesn’t evolve significantly over time. Swordplay serves as a backup option in close quarters, though it feels less refined and tends to become repetitive compared to the more engaging ranged mechanics. Level design follows a mostly linear path, guiding players through forests, ruins, and mystical locations inspired by the Scottish Highlands. Along the way, players encounter a steady mix of enemies, simple puzzles, and occasional platforming challenges. The puzzles are generally light in complexity, often involving activating mechanisms or working alongside companions like the bear version of Elinor or the mischievous triplets. These elements help break up the action but rarely demand much critical thinking, reinforcing the game’s accessible design philosophy. The pacing is steady, though somewhat predictable, as the structure repeats similar patterns across different areas. Visually, the game captures the essence of the Brave setting without fully matching the richness of its film counterpart. The environments are colorful and appropriately stylized, evoking the wild, mystical atmosphere of the Highlands, but the technical limitations are noticeable. Character animations can feel stiff, textures lack detail, and the overall presentation reflects its era and budget. Still, there is enough charm in the art direction to make the world feel cohesive and recognizable, especially for fans of the movie. The audio design supports this with fitting music and voice work, though it doesn’t stand out in a particularly memorable way. One of the more notable features is its cooperative element, where a second player can assist in a supportive role, adding a layer of accessibility and making it a more social experience. This inclusion reinforces the game’s appeal as a family-friendly title, allowing less experienced players to participate without being overwhelmed. It’s a small addition, but one that aligns well with the game’s overall design goals. Where the game begins to lose some of its momentum is in its lack of depth and long-term variety. The campaign is relatively short, and while there are collectibles and minor upgrades to pursue, they don’t significantly change how the game is played. Enemy encounters start to feel repetitive, and the limited evolution of mechanics means that the experience doesn’t build toward anything particularly complex. Camera issues and occasional control inconsistencies can also interrupt the flow, especially during more precise platforming sections. These flaws don’t ruin the experience, but they do prevent it from reaching a higher level of polish. Even with these limitations, the game manages to be consistently enjoyable within its intended scope. It understands its audience and delivers an experience that is approachable, visually appealing, and easy to engage with. It avoids the common pitfalls of licensed games by offering a complete and functional adventure, even if it doesn’t push beyond its comfort zone. There’s a sense of sincerity in its design, as though it aims to provide a pleasant extension of the film rather than simply capitalize on it. In the end, Disney•Pixar Brave: The Video Game is a solid, approachable action-adventure that succeeds more through consistency than ambition. It offers a straightforward journey with enough charm and variety to keep players engaged, particularly those who are already invested in its world and characters. While it lacks the depth and innovation needed to stand out among more advanced titles, it fulfills its role as a family-friendly adventure with competence and care. Rating: 7/10

Mission accomplie !
Fun little game, though very short - buy discounted!
one of the more inspired and unique disney/disney princess games. the platforming/twin stick shooter mashup that makes up merida's gameplay is extremely cool. along the way you get different elemental powers that can be used to activate platforms or defeat enemies with specific weaknesses. you can imagine frantically swapping out powers as you fight enemies, but sadly the game almost never does this instead focusing on one weakness per fight. sometimes theres two, but rarely. if there was a NG+ that mixed up the arenas more, the game would be a definitive hidden gem. instead its a solid enough kids game thats fun for the kiddos, which is what its meant to be so can't really fault it for that.
