Night after night, the same dream of a guillotine. A headhunting serial killer. And the "knights" in black who follow soon after. Irrationality that defies the realm of common sense begins to assault and devour the city.

Dies irae ~Amantes amentes~, developed by light and published by views Co., Ltd, is a visual novel that fully commits to scale, intensity, and thematic ambition, delivering an experience that is both captivating and demanding. It begins with a relatively grounded premise centered on Ren Fujii, a high school student whose life takes a dark turn after a violent incident with his closest friend. This personal conflict acts as a gateway into a much larger narrative, one that quickly expands into a supernatural war involving secret societies, immortal warriors, and forces that transcend ordinary human understanding. The setting evolves from a familiar modern environment into a stage for something far more grand and otherworldly, where reality itself feels increasingly unstable. The structure follows the traditional format of visual novels, with players progressing through large amounts of text while making occasional choices that determine which route the story will take. Each route focuses on a different character, revealing new perspectives and crucial pieces of the overarching plot. This layered approach is central to the experience, as no single path provides a complete understanding of the story. Instead, players are encouraged to explore multiple routes to fully grasp the depth of the narrative. This design rewards patience and dedication, gradually building a complex web of interconnected events and character motivations. What truly defines Dies irae is its writing style, which is dense, dramatic, and unapologetically elaborate. The dialogue frequently shifts into philosophical territory, exploring themes such as the nature of power, the meaning of existence, and the ideals that drive individuals to pursue their goals at any cost. Characters are often larger than life, embodying extreme ideologies and expressing them through lengthy, emotionally charged monologues. Battles are not simply physical confrontations but ideological clashes, where opposing beliefs are tested as much as strength. This approach gives the story a unique identity, though it also contributes to its demanding nature. The cast is one of the game’s greatest strengths, featuring a wide range of characters who are given significant depth and attention. Each route allows players to explore different facets of these personalities, uncovering their motivations, struggles, and relationships. The antagonists, in particular, are memorable for their strong presence and distinctive philosophies, often challenging the protagonist in ways that go beyond simple opposition. The voice acting enhances these interactions, bringing a level of intensity and emotion that complements the dramatic tone of the writing. Combined with a powerful and atmospheric soundtrack, the presentation elevates key moments and helps maintain engagement throughout the lengthy narrative. Despite its strengths, the game is not without its challenges. The pacing can be uneven, with long stretches of exposition and repeated information that may test the patience of some players. The sheer volume of text means that the experience requires a significant time investment, and those not fully engaged with its themes may find it overwhelming. Additionally, the structure of the release, where different routes are accessed separately, can make the experience feel fragmented, especially given how essential each route is to understanding the full story. Another aspect to consider is accessibility. The complexity of the narrative and the density of its writing make it less approachable for newcomers to the genre or those seeking a more straightforward experience. The game demands attention and willingness to engage with its ideas, rewarding those who do with a richly layered story but potentially alienating those who prefer a lighter or more concise approach. Even with these limitations, Dies irae ~Amantes amentes~ succeeds in delivering a powerful and memorable experience that stands out within the visual novel genre. Its commitment to grand storytelling, philosophical exploration, and emotional intensity creates a narrative that lingers long after it concludes. It is a work that does not aim to be easily consumed, but rather to immerse players in a world of extremes where every moment carries weight and meaning. Rating: 8/10
