Hi. Here's a review from someone who didn't receive the game for free, has played for more than 1 hour, and will give an honest opinion on the game. I stumbled on this game, and it's a cheap buy. It isn't bad, but it also isn't great. Ultimately, I do enjoy it when I play, but it definitely takes you back to the days of NES difficulty, which is a time in gaming I do not miss. While I like a challenge and don't want my hand held, no difficulty setting in today's gaming world is a big downfall. Many indie devs have an obsession with making their games difficult opposed to "fun for everyone." Just a simple difficulty mode that increases the players HP's would be a nice feature. There's only one mode and you have 5 HP. While some might get far with this, others may struggle. This is why 90% of developers have a difficulty setting. They want to sell their game to a broader audience. You can even have a "hardcore" mode for really good players that only get 1 or 2 HP for an added challenge. Personally, this does hurt the game. Are there players who do well with the current way the game is setup. Absolutely. And then there are players, like me... where clearly my accuracy is a bit off, and I would really benefit from a few additional health points. This is a single player game. Having this setting would not impact the experience of those who love the challenge... and it would help those who struggle. As a developer you want the players to have fun... not sit around, pulling their hair out and rage quitting your game out of frustration. Just make it fun for everyone.
Very entertaining gameplay loop, simple in presentation but very challenging. - You drop down, holding jump lets you hover - Air kills only give you a combo - Combos run down over a short timer, reset on kill - Ammo for your weapon only restores when you land OR bounce on an enemy - Weapons take a few shots, bounce is an instant kill - 5/10/15/20/etc combos give you red gems, to spend on weapon upgrades From that you can see the gameplay loop becomes trying to rapidly move downward through the level sniping kills to keep up a combo and thus become stronger. The better you do, the stronger you get and the 'easier' the game becomes. It's really cool to promote 'perfection', but you're also not punished completely for missing combos as you can progress without the upgrades fine. It's a neat 'win more' mechanic, and also allows for more mistakes later as the game gets harder. I really really like it, very quick to pick up and play.
So, i completed this game about an hour ago, and as someone who's favourite genre is rogue-likes enjoys I %100 recommend it. I've been following the development process of this game for months now and being able to play it is like a breath of fresh air. It has a really fun progression system and heavily relies on the players ability to hit combos, which adds to the combat system in a really fun way. The classic and retro look is a unique style and adds a really nice touch to this game. Once you get the hang of the combat system there's nothing more satisfying than hitting a huge combo streak! I highly recommend this addictive rogue-like, and definitely suggest checking it out
Platformer roguelite + unique + challenging = Jump down into the depths and glide around shooting enemies. Reload by reaching land. Collect crystals and buy upgrades. Fight interesting bosses. Devil's Dive is difficult and fun. I love the focus on combos and find myself enjoying the smooth game play of bouncing and gliding from enemy to enemy no matter how far I get each time. The simple story works well, The art and music are complimentary and even though I've been on innumerable runs, I'm still enjoying the background chip tunes. The bosses are tough. They stand on the edge of the fun side, staring frustration right in the face, but not quite crossing over. I find myself smiling and wanting to throw my controller at the same time, but it pushes me to get better. I don't have any big complaints. Overall I'd definitely recommend Devil's Dive.
I love it! Imagine 'Downwell' but with slightly more depth. Still carries its own identity with terrific artwork, animations, music and solid gameplay mechanics. Will most definitely commit until I see the ending.
Every aspect is oozing with creativity, the pixel art, animation, music etc It's great fun to play, highly recommend!
a terrific lil action roguelite with tons of style and energy to it. the pixel art and music are top-notch, and the game-feel is impeccable. absolutely nails the mix of Downwell, twinstick, and platforming. this is a blast, and a steal at $4. likewise, its soundtrack is an easy recommend at $2 for one of the best of the year. having a great time with this one, will certainly be returning to the well for more of it. for more thoughtful recommendations of the best games on Steam, check out my curator, The Absolute Finest.
10/10 game. Super fun and addictive, instantly had to go run after run when i launched the game. Everything about this game is just great. The art style, pixel art sprites, and animation are all top notch. The music is fantastic. The gameplay is smooth, haven't come across any bugs. The game is also tuned well in terms of balancing and difficulty, each run I feel like i'm slightly better than my last run. The roguelite elements, unlocking of weapons and upgrades are also very well done. And the bosses are also really challenging but fun! The mood and retro feel is bringing back memories from my childhood. Overall I highly recommend this game.
